My kids have thankfully never had RSV so I don't really even know what to look for. Obviously with it flying around so much I need to read up.

Ugh. Our picu is full of RSV and other resp. illnesses. My close friend and my ex primary nicu baby from work has RSV and is in the PICU and is so sick. Poor baby. I feel so bad for them.

For my 5 year old she had a runny nose and a dry cough, but she had periods where she could not catch her breath and seemed like an asthma attack. We had Albuterol on hand so gave that to her and she did okay for a few days of laying around. Fever came on day 4 for one night and then cough was in her chest and she ended up ok abx. That said my 8 year old never got a cold or any symptoms despite constant exposure, so maybe his immune system fought it off or he had it when he was younger and didn't escalate to needing to be tested.

My potentially very limited understanding is that for many kids it does not behave much different than an “average” respiratory virus but some strains seem particularly fierce and of course some groups are particularly vulnerable.

DS1 (10) to our knowledge never had RSV. DS2 had it last fall and one of the kids at daycare ended up hospitalized from it. DS2s cough would take his breath away and he had a fever for a good few days. Days 4-5 were the worst.

Our doctors kept emphasizing that too and prescribed some medicines to have on hand just in case things took a turn over night or on the weekend when it'd be harder to be seen quickly.

So last week I scheduled the new booster for my girls for Monday, and the day after DD1 came down with a cold. There’s bee no fever, mainly congestion and an occasional nasty sounding PND cough. She’s getting better, but still going through tissues. Would you reschedule? I know they say it’s ok… but.

This is my understanding, too - that most people get it in early childhood and just label it a “cold.” But I don’t have a source for that. Per the PA that just dx’d strep in the 12YO an unexpected benefit to the Covid test was that it also picked up RSV, so it was easy for the lab to run both tests. Apparently it was new news that older kids and adults get RSV with some pretty regular regularity whereas pre-Covid it was considered to be a standard infant/early child hood disease. So it’s likely always been here, just undetected except in severe cases.

I can't find the updated booster locally for my kids at my usual places. They have been sick so we're going to wait a couple weeks so maybe by then I'll be able to. They are just past the 2 months since their first booster so hopefully they're still somewhat protected for a little while.

That’s the only reason I would delay, so she’s not having side effects on top of being sick.

I have insomnia so I’ve been scrolling the internet and found this… I’m not surprised finance.yahoo.com/news/pfizer-plans-sell-covid-vaccine-102500210.htmlI did read the article and saw some of the “reasons” why a price hike is “necessary” but at the end of the day I know that it’s about the money no matter what type of spin they try to put on it

I took DS2(4) to the kids urgent care lite since he's been super congested with a nasty cough since Wed evening and the NP said it's croup. I thought the cough was dry with croup, so now I'm kicking myself for not taking him in sooner.
DD(10) also started having symptoms last night so I took her in too. Probably also croup, but just ride it out for her. Her temp was 99.8, so technically I guess I could send her to school tomorrow, but she could probably use some rest.
DS2 got a prescription for a steroid, which he did not keep down. Fortunately the uc snuck us right back in and he got an injection instead.

I'm finally bringing in my 4 year old because she got the back to school crud in the second week of September but still hasn't shaken the cough or congestion. They didn't have anything with the regular scheduling, but magically when I called they had an appointment for Wednesday morning.
I'm wondering if she needs Albuterol treatments or something. Her cough gets so bad in the evening/overnight/morning.

This is frustrating.
also pissed off all the people in the comments are like yeah, that's why I'm getting novavax now, like it's NBD to lie. Maybe in some parts of the country you can, but not here. I'm just like how?! still no option for me to attempt to schedule it as the new booster.

Thanks. DS2 is doing sooooo much better this evening. After his steroid injection he said he's never going to walk again, but within an hour he was running around like a nut. Kids 🤦♀️ I picked up 2 cool mist humidifiers for their bedrooms today at the advice of the NP, so hopefully that helps DD sleep too. My mom never did anything like that growing up, but I'm definitely realizing how toxic some of her "tough it out" mentality was

Glad you are helping them get comfortable.

I made some calls today and I don't want to jinx it, but I have an appointment tomorrow morning with our health department for a shot. The health department told me if you haven't had a shot in 6 months, it doesn't matter your previous shots (and if you can't schedule it, the website is wrong- riiight). Not getting my hopes up, but we shall see!
If this doesn't work, I may ask for help trying to figure out how to get one on the low down. Kidding, not really.

The dreaded time has come and I'm having my toddler start practicing mask-wearing. Masking has been so normalized for him that he often asks for a mask when we all put ours on and will wear it for short periods of time. My problem is finding a mask that fits him properly. I have masks that fit him fine but they all slide down his nose, even with wire, because he has a flatter nose. I have a 2D style KF94 in XS but I wonder if the 3d style might fit better? But I haven't found XS in that style yet. I was also looking at the smallest Happy Mask but I'm not sure that would fit any better.

The humidifer set off the smoke alarm in DS2's room around midnight 🤦♀️ The room was hazy so I had that panic of "is it smoke", "what could be burning?", and then figure out how to turn off the alarm. Fortunately (I guess) nobody else woke up, but that's also kind of scary if it was a real emergency.

It's the worst.

And angels rejoiced. I ended up getting it at our HD. They were ready for me. They were very nice. They wanted me to make sure I felt good about getting a shot after my previous reactions. 10/10

I think I found one that's supposedly smaller than the size I get for my 5YO so I'm gonna try it. I definitely feel like that style will stay on better.
