mrsweasley, how old is your DS? My children hate the swabs too, but my youngest is almost 7 (oldest 9) and I've started letting them do the swabbing themselves under strict supervision and they don't complain anymore. My older one had to learn to do it herself over the summer before camp, otherwise I'm not sure I would have jumped on it, but glad we did. I second this. My oldest is 7 and does her own with us watching and reminding her to actually do it correctly. But as long as she does it herself she's ok with taking one. I'd definitely see if letting him do his own test helps.

I remember MANY (29) years ago our 4th grade teacher got us all these cool cup things (basically water bottles) for us to keep on our desk/in class and it was the COOLEST thing. I’m side eyeing this teacher hard about not wanting water bottles in class. (And yes understanding that since I’m not a teacher there may be reasons I’m not aware of). I also tell me kid to never ever drink out of drinking fountains.

My 5 year old got the Pfizer booster at Walgreens and her arm is still sore two days later, but no other side effects. My 8 year old got moderna tonight and hoping he's fine since he has a school run tomorrow.
I know this group is on top of everything, but definitely get your flu shots early - my 5 year old had RSV, flu a and flu b 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately urgent care didn't test her for anything, and my 3 year old spread RSV at daycare (her cough started that night, so asymptomatic at school)..and a classmates little sister ended up in the ER for 2 nights bc there are no pediatric hospital beds in the DC region 😔. They really need an RSV vaccine asap, we never had it before and now have had it twice within a year.

It's traumatic for all. I'm definitely going to have them try it next time.

I also tell me kid to never ever drink out of drinking fountains. My DD has said there is one boy who was causing a lot of problems with his like banging the metal ones on his desk, purposefully dropping it on the floor, pouring out water, etc. So first apparently he was banned from a water bottle (they have a drinking fountain in the classroom), then everyone had to leave them on the back counter, and then she decided no one could have one. So I don't know if other kids were doing things too or what. We have conferences on Monday so I'll be interested in seeing if she brings it up

I was just reading a story in WaPo yesterday that the pediatric bed situation in DC is expected to be dire through the winter. I’m glad everyone seems recovered for now ❤️ I don’t think we’ve ever had RSV either…

My middlest did 3 days in our local children's hospital with RSV and flu a when she was only 2 months old. It's scary. I don't remember where I heard it because it was a while back now, but supposedly they're working a covid flu RSV combo shot. That would be so clutch.

I’d be raising hell to the school if my kid was told they couldn’t have water in their water bottle (I say this as a kid who our policy at school was drinks were only allowed in the cafeteria and I still struggle to drink through out the day as habit).

We are closing in on 24 hours until we leave for our trip. I’m expecting something to disrupt it at any moment (like an illness or covid+ lol). I’m anxious about three small children in an airport when we’ve been more or less locked down foreverrrrr
This is our first trip since since of 2019 with all three kids as well as the first plane trip since then 😣

You got this teraiin. Just keep throwing all the snacks in the world at them for distractions. Gummy bears at take off and landing are like a family tradition now that my kids love. Even DS2 who doesn't love gummies.

My 4th grader came home last week and said her teacher said they couldn't bring water bottles anymore because they opened the drinking fountains at school. Um no. She told her teacher her parents didn't allow her to use the drinking fountain so her teacher said she could bring hers and just keep it in the back of the class. Now this week again she's saying she doesn't see why DD needs to bring a water bottle and I needed to email them to give her permission 🙄 We don't want her to use the drinking fountain because it's FUCKING GROSS and you know, flu, covid, pandemic? 🤦🏻♀️ FFS. Just....why? Why does it matter if she has a water bottle?! My kids were always asked to have a water bottle even before covid

Will anyone tag me if you hear of people being able to schedule novavax boosters by them? I've checked all the neighboring states and no one seems to have updated anything yet.

Or I guess it could be flu? He had a crunchy sounding cough and very congested, plus low fever. He's doing mostly okay though, still playing and being a stinker, so I'm not sure it'd be worth trying to get him tested for anything

For kicks I searched and it looks like the northern county health departments in NY state are scheduling and A Costco in Rochester and a random pharmacy I’ve never heard of in a city I’ve never heard of. However despite being listed on the vaccine finder as having novavax none of the places I checked are actually letting you sign up for it 🧐

Also, I'm very impressed at your kids who will swab themselves. No way my anxious 6yo could do that.

We were all dehydrated in school in the 80s and 90s, so why should these kids be any different. *troll*

Mom fail - my 8 year old feels like crap today..any other kids have stronger reactions to the new booster (he got moderna)? Of course he had a fun run at school today and definitely was not leading the pack like he expected to. Hoping tomorrow he's back to normal, Motrin seems to be helping.

My 8 year old didn't really have any reaction to the first 3 shots, but with this one she woke up the next day with a fever, headache, and fatigue. (I actually gave her a COVID test to make sure it wasn't bad timing.) That afternoon we had to go out, so we gave her tylenol which perked her up a bit, and by the time it would have worn off she was back to her usual self. This was the first Moderna shot she got, all the others were Pfizer.

Glad it was short lived for you.

Weekly email from 1st grade teacher ends with “Please make sure you are sending your child with a water bottle every day. There are no water fountains and they need drinks.” Last but was paraphrased, but I’m fairly certain every week ends this way.

Without watwr bottles teachers are pulling their hair out with 30 kids all wanting a drink of water at the drinking fountain. It eats up a lot of time. some classrooms have a sink and drinking fountain in the room itself but there's still all the raise your hand to ask and then if 1 gets a drink all the rest ask to get one too. Water bottles much simpler.

There are no water fountains and they need drinks.” Last but was paraphrased, but I’m fairly certain every week ends this way. DS2 (he’s in UPK) newsletter says this every and for multiple weeks they had to keep reminding people to only fill them with water and not juice/soda.
