DS (8 next month) can’t regularly open bottles, and when he does he usually squeezes the bottle too hard and makes a giant mess so I usually open them for him.
He can’t tie shoe laces either. We were going to work on it last summer but I let it drop so this summer Laces bootcamp is on. But most of his shoes are either slip on or Velcro and the tie laces ones I replace with no ties.

I just saw a headline in the WaPo that brought on this anxiety for me - that many elementary aged kids are lacking in basic life skills like tying shoes and opening bottles. My daughter is an August birthday, so younger side for her grade. In October she got an invite to a friend turning 9 (3rd grade), and I was like OMG, you can't go to a 9 yo's birthday party not knowing how to tie shoes! So I sat her down and was like you are not getting up until we figure this out. Fortunately only took 10 minutes. She just doesn't have shoes with laces, so it's been moot.

My 5 year old just attempted a small water bottle and couldn't get it. Not sure about the 7 year old. We don't have a lot of single use bottle type things in our house. I'm thinking the 7 year old can open new milk jugs?

maybe she’ll be interested in learning the other way after she gets comfortable with the bunny loops. DD started with bunny loops but then decided she wanted to tie shoes mommy’s way. I’m trying! Being a right handed parent to a leftie kid makes this task surprisingly difficult. I am hoping she gets it. DS is definitely a leftie. I'll make my dad or my middle sister (also lefties) teach him 😂

My 15 yo still struggles opening bottles sometimes. I would say she can do it 80% of the time, but Gatorade, in particular, is a struggle for her.
My middle DD (now 14) has been great at opening bottles since she was 4 or 5. My 6 yo can open things maybe half the time; she's not strong enough for some of them yet.

The 7 year old has never owned shoes with laces. Hence, he hasn't had to learn.
The 5 year old wears corrective braces and needs an adult to get them on properly, and then cram his shoes on on top. So we are there helping him already.
Adding "tying shoes" to this summer's goals.

Okay but honestly, is tying shoes a necessary life skill anymore? There are so many elastic laces or slip on shoes, even for athletic shoes. I feel like that’s one we can let go of, TBH. If they play any type of field sports, yes, it's necessary. I'm sure they exist, but I've never seen lace-free cleats. The amount of time spent tying shoes/cleats at my kids' flag football games is not insignificant.

I use it more randomly in life than in tying shoes.

But you can also replace those with elastic ones, if you wanted to…

He's from Minnesota! My mom and I both love him. Also for my 3 he's almost always spot on 😂.

Both my kids (8 and almost 11) can open bottles. I don’t remember when they started. But DD’s hand are almost as big as mine, so that may help.

DS(9) can open water bottles and the like; he struggles a bit with things with bigger or harder lids. He still can't use the manual can opener. A month ago he finally figured out how to open child proof caps when he finally read the lid and realized there were instructions on how to do it

My kid can't even open his car door (from the outside). I can't figure out what he isn't doing, he's pulling on it but it's not disengaging to open.
Needless to say, I don't know about bottles.

My almost-5yo can open most bottles, depends on how tight they are. She's also practicing shoe-lace-tying. I have no idea if she holds a pencil correctly. I know I don't so it's really a tossup. When I say he doesn’t hold a pencil properly, I mean he holds it like a trowel. 🥴

Gatorade bottles are hard to open - sometimes my 7 and 9 year olds can do it and sometimes not. Also, and this is a confession, but DS (9) didn't learn to tie his shoes until this year because I couldn't find shoes in his size with elastic laces. (I know I could have bought elastic laces.) it is so hard to find shoes with regular laces in sizes 3 and below. I really wish my kids feet would grow faster. Target! I bought DD size 2 Sketchers there and I've seen size 1

Another rightie mom with a leftie kid. I had to find a YouTube video to show her the way I tie shoes and then school OT taught her the bunny loops way and that's what she uses.

That would have freaked me out. DS is a pretty good rules follower and doesn't mess with our meds, but still. I'm not sorry he can and does get his own vitamins now though, one less thing for me to remember!

I'm trying to remember if I could open a bottle at that age and then I realized I was just drinking iced tea that my mom made from powdered mix and kept in a pitcher from the Tupperware lady. Or hose water.

I can't guarantee my 8 year can tie shoes. He learned, but he hasn't had to do it for a while. I should check in on that. I know my oldest learned it in PE last year, but none of her current shoes have laces, so have no idea if she’s retained it.
