Does anyone here skip periods on bcp? My insurance won't let me pick up early so I don't know the way around this. I used to do it all the time before healthcare rules changed - pharmacist said I can not pay for it full price either. What are my options? What am I missing?

Could you just switch to the type where you only get four periods a year?

My doc used to give me samples to fill in my time gaps.

I think I used to get a 3 month supply. Is that a possibility for you?

Are you looking to just skip an occasional period? Like for a special occasion?
I would always use the mail order pharmacy and get 3 months at a time shipped to my house. Then, reorder as soon as you can. By refilling as soon as possible, you can build up a buffer. But you can't skip too often or else you run out.
But then I got my IUD and realized it's awesome. Never taking pills again!!!!

Our mail order scripts always come way before the date they'd let us fill at the pharmacy. That may work for you.

You should definitely be able to pay out of pocket if you want, I'm not sure why the pharmacist wouldn't let you do that. Did your doctor write the directions for you to skip periods? If the pharmacy billed it for 21 days it should be ok. But your doctor would have to specify that you skip placebos.

I guess I need to call my doc first tomorrow and go from there. Thanks!

I use nuvaring and skip but that just means leaving the ring in for the full 4 weeks instead of 3.

An obgyn was actually surprised I never got pregnant doing that, but this was like 8 years ago, so maybe stuff changed.

I would either ask your Dr. for a new rx with specific instructions, that way the pharm/ins has it on file, OR switch to one of the seasonal ones anyway as long as you don't have issues with different brands/etc.
What a PITA.
Or IUD. The best.

I agree with others who are telling you to get a new rx. I used to take the pill continuously for five months without a cycle because of debilitating cramps.

The doctor needs to write the prescription the right way - something my current doctor doesn't seem to understand how to do (another reason I'm probably changing doctors). If he writes 90 day supply they'll just give you three packs, which isn't enough pills obviously. It needs to be written that you need "continuous use" so that they give you four packs to make the 90 day supply (84 pills plus the placebo week).
If you like the current pill that you're on then I personally wouldn't suggest switching just based on the packaging. I did that once and went to Seasonique and it was NOT a good fit for me (mood swings, etc.)
It would be nice if the pharmaceutical companies could give us some credit and skip the fancy daily packaging and just throw our pills in a bottle like the rest of our prescriptions. Wonder how much money is wasted on providing those stupid placebos?

bearfootz there are a few that come in a 21 pack, but I find they enjoy wasting money and making cute pink packages to get women to choose their brand 😉

An obgyn was actually surprised I never got pregnant doing that, but this was like 8 years ago, so maybe stuff changed. The paperwork that came with it said just to not leave it in more than 4 weeks. I also don't intend on skipping a bunch, it was more accidental than anything last time.

So helpful. Thank you bearfootz. I feel high maintenance because it took a ton to find one I liked that didn't make me bleed constantly and now I need them to change how they write the rx.
