blurnette989 , does the school have any gear they sell? T-shirts or anything? (This may be super American so maybe not.) Or could you find some clothing with your town's name on it (or like a football team or something). Some extra clothing may be appreciated but if there's a way to make it feel like it's a 'welcome to the community' thing and less of a charitable donation? Also, I've never met a 6-year-old who doesn't love a squishy stuffed animal. ETA: Maybe something to introduce them to the community and give them a fun experience like museum passes for the family?

So DS2 got a new student in his 1st grade class from the Ukraine. I want to organize a little welcome basket for her. What kinds of things would you give a 6 year old girl who may or may not have list everything? Eta I've also emailed their teacher to confirm if there are specific school items she needs. I would do a big basket of art supplies. Those are near-universslly appealing to 6 year olds. And I love Richard's suggestion of a local fun thing to do

I love the idea of a school shirt blurnette989. My 6 yo started school late in December and her school shirt is a prized possession. She is SO proud of it. She would love art supplies. Maybe a gift card to somewhere kid friendly?

@blurnette, if other parents are agreeable I would include a list of parents names and phone numbers identified by kidsβ first name (Jane - Mom: Amy (cell number), dad (cell number)) so the parents have a way to contact their friends parents for get together. Ideally it would be loosely translated into Ukrainian and in Portuguese so itβs readable?
I would also include a list of the local parks/similar that are close by, free and kid approved with their addresses so they can just read the list and decide what to do instead of having to use more mental capitol to google/plan/etc.
Does the student have any siblings? If so I would include some small things for them as well.

blurnette989 this may sound so trivial in comparison but when we bought our house the previous owner left us a really sweet letter just telling us about the hyperlocal area (this mechanic is trustworthy, this cafΓ© is quiet and has good coffee, this mom and pop restaurant has the best xyz, go here for abc lessons for the kids). It's possible that type of information could be overwhelming but my understanding is that your setup is much more a village than clustered suburbs so it could be helpful to just share "basics locals know" information

Damn it. Weβve discussed this before, this seems to be an update of sorts. They had no idea. Even the specialists didnβt have proper gear. From a linked article (below) "When they were asked if they knew about the 1986 catastrophe, the explosion of the fourth block (of the Chernobyl plant), they did not have a clue. They had no idea what kind of a facility they were at," he said. "We talked to regular soldiers. All we heard from them was 'It's critically important infrastructure'. That was it," the man said. www.reuters.com/world/europe/unprotected-russian-soldiers-disturbed-radioactive-dust-chernobyls-red-forest-2022-03-28/

It's bad enough they lied to these poor young soliders about going to war. Dumping them at Chernobyl without a clue what they were going into is basically murder. Just disgusting on so, so many levels.

I can't for the life of me find the article again, but I read earlier today that Russia has left Chernobyl. They had soliders out digging trenches in the Red Forest apparently, the part of the zone where no one is supposed to be that still has the highest levels of radiation. Apparently they've since split. I wish I could find the article. It's really tragic for the soliders who will die from the radiation sickness for no damn good reason. Absolutely disgusting.

This really is crazy. Like the spines of steel on these people. They went in helicopters, so sure they can avoid radar but that also means they are low enough to be straight up visible to the eye.

This is blowing my mind- no pun intended. The video of the cars driving through them was so nerve-racking to watch. Iβm panicky when I have to drive over the open hole for tire checks or oil changes.

The videos coming out of the parts of Ukraine where Russians have been pulling out of are horrific - and seemingly everywhere on Twitter. Be careful scrolling.

It's bad, really, really bad. β οΈ CW β οΈ Iβve seen this as well. Those poor kids will probably have lifelong health issues now. I canβt remember where I read it now, probably NPR or BBC but there were also reports of elderly women killing themselves to avoid rape and also some in the aftermath of rape.
