I searched for a Yellowstone thread, but couldn't find one, so I'm starting this! Season 4 dropped last night on Paramount, a 2 hour episode.
The cliffhanger for S3 was intense; I was anxious about the premiere. I like the new kid, and seeing a softer side of Beth but also her take-no-prisoners attitude. I continue to be obsessed with Rip, and I hate Jamie. Garrett Randall's character, played by Will Patton, makes my skin crawl.
We are obsessed with the show, but the commercials! First of all there are too many (as always) and using the actors in ad campaigns was smart, but I am not into it. lol
They did show a preview for Yellowstone's prequel, 1883, with Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, and Billy Bob Thornton - and I'd be up for watching, but it's only going to air on Paramount+ and that pisses me off.

OK, is Yellowstone on Paramount+? I tried to find it and couldn't, so I had to download Philo. I can't have 35 million streaming subscriptions.
So many commercials.
I was annoyed that Beth kept putting off telling John what happened, so for the ENTIRE episode, I was waiting for someone to be dead. But then everyone slowly started showing back up, except Tate and Kayce's wife, but she was in the preview for Ep3, so I assume they are both fine (if not traumatized) and just weren't in these two.
This season is going to be intense.

ok I'm so glad you responded, I thought maybe I was the only one watching! So Yellowstone is just on Paramount (for now) - if they move it to Paramount+ I'm gonna be unhappy. What's Philo?! I was really thinking Casey died, 4PrivetDrive! That got dragged out too long. The promos for the rest of the season are I'm so so curious who was behind the orchestrated attempts on their lives. I think it's too easy for it to have been Jamie.

I thought a 2 hour premiere really wasn't necessary. There were a lot of areas they could have cut down on and it wasn't really as exciting as I had anticipated it to be. But the season looks like it will be exciting over all.
I enjoyed the new kid and at the end of the scene with his dad passing, I said to H that Beth's going to take him in. I was shocked at how Rip reacted initially. But I think it was just to try to show him that it's going to be tough and not an easy going ride. At the end I was glad he was welcomed inside.
I'm upset too about the prequel only being on Paramount+. It's ridiculous. Not sure how I will watch it. I recognized Tim McGraw right away when he showed up in last night's episode.

My friend recommended this show a few weeks ago and I watched one episode and didn’t have the attention span for it. Should I give it another episode? My main draw is Kevin Costner.

mrsbliz, I also think the 2 hours was a bit much, but after so long without it, I was just glad to be watching. mirabelle, come for Costner, stay for Hauser. yes - give it another shot, at least 3 episodes.

Okay, so I just watched this episode last night and I may be done with this show.
The kid is 14!! He’s not an asshole 22 year old. He’s a child and Rip treated him like dirt. Beth just let him. And I’m supposed to be happy when he gets Hamburger Helper at the end? Fuck. Off.
That kid will grow up with the same blind, scary loyalty that Rip/Kayce/Beth has for a man who does not deserve it.
Jimmy - word from the wise - you CAN leave the ranch and be an adult. John Dutton isn’t your master.
John Dutton is a fucking, abusive asshole. I hope he loses his whole goddamn ranch.

MH and I just started this show last week. We’re watching on Prime and are a few episodes into season 2, so it may be a while until s4 is available on there.
I love this show, it’s the first show in a long time to actually hold my attention and make me want to keep watching.

I am super “dgaf about the ranch.” All this moaning about legacy, giving something to Tate, preserving the land, etc. I don’t find Dutton admirable in any sense of the word and the ranch makes no money. He contributes nothing but making a cult of criminals and acting high and mighty. I hate him with everything in me.

I don’t think we’re supposed to like John Dutton, or most of them. Most of them are murdering, power hungry assholes. Makes for a great tv show though

We’re watching people try to take the Dutton Ranch over and over. The people are one-dimensional villians and the story is predominantly from Dutton perspective so we’re supposed to feel for the Dutton family while knowing they are bad, too. But the show has also told us that the ranch makes no money, thus bringing little to anyone who lives there. The ranch hires few regular people and instead opts for ex-cons they can brand and control. John waxes poetic about the land but also wants it solely for himself. The writer keeps putting that ego next to the stories from the reservation, thus highlighting the continued absurdity that one man controls iso much with a gang of henchmen. The show has given me no nuance, no reason to cheer for Dutton. They’ve offered no likeable character who tries to offer another view of the Duttons. I can’t keep watching an evil man do evil things to serve only his evil soul and find it enjoyable.

joy I guess TETO then. I don’t really care about the outcome of the ranch, I’m loving the journey so far. I think it’s similar to Breaking Bad like that

joy, this is my issue with the show as well. All the characters are horrible people, and I don’t really have someone to root for. We’re supposed to believe that the rich white man who owns the land is somehow an example of the American dream, and purer and better than the developers who want to come in and change things.

Right, yes. My tipping point was bringing in Carter. I feel like they want me to view him as a success story - kid with nothing, Dutton Ranch brings him a new life. Beth/Rip hate that he tried to rob a convenience store when he has literally nothing but then tell him he deserves nothing while training him to be another Rip, who murders at the will of another criminal. “It’s evil to be THAT kind of criminal; it’s virtuous to be THIS kind of criminal.” What? They’ve lost the plot.

Everyone kind sucked, didn’t they? I think what’s missing for me in Yellowstone is the writer’s awareness that Dutton sucks. I get the impression that the writer LOVES Dutton and see few flaws in his ways because they offer no character of redeeming quality who see him differently. The major ones - the journalist, Jamie’s baby mama, Jamie, Monica, and Walker - are treated with such disrespect by the writer thar the audience can’t take their opinions seriously. What would put this more in Breaking Bad territory for me would be if Rip struggled - even for moment - with his role. This show needs a Jesse Pinkman so badly.

I like the breaking bad analogy but my first analogy of the show to someone was Sons of Anarchy but on a ranch vs. motorcycles.
