A girl friend and I are heading to Montreal in a few weekends. Just trying to make sure we make the most of foodie heaven. We’ve both been a few times, are trying to grab one or two key reservations, but I was curious if anyone here has an absolute must do?!
Please kindly share if you do!

We did the tour of Notre Dame Basilica. It was goooorgeous.
Hike Mount Royal - starts on McGill’s campus
Underground City is cool!
EDIT - oh lol - you meant food! 🤣

Go to Old Port and walk around there.
We used to go yearly. We never got reservations anywhere, just tried new restaurants each time. The food was pretty much always amazing.

We both adore Montreal. And have been a bunch of times. We’re staying in Old Montreal to avoid the trappings of our youth … namely Rue Ste Catherine’s and McGill Campus (I went to university a few hours away…I suspect some areas around McGill could be triggering for me considering the bad behaviour I got up to in that neighbourhood)!

My SIL went to McGill as well. Cool! What reason? I’m always curious when Americans come to Canada for university! One of my good friends at the school I went to was from Boston…it was entirely because even as an international student, university was still cheaper in Canada than in the US.

My FIL was born and raised in Montreal. All of his family is there. My SIL applied for dual citizenship and went to school for business there. That's why we went every year to see my GMIL and other family. FIL moved to America after meeting MIL in Boston at grad school.

I really want to go to Au Pied du Cochon, Martin Picards place, but the girl friend I am traveling about isn’t really all about pig. Which is okay, I’ll save that for the time being and focus on the bagels, and chicken and dim sum (oh my)!

Blue Nile! I've been there twice for the best Ethiopian. I love La Taj for Indian, but that is off of St Catherine. But convenient to Old Montreal. I've never been to Au Pied du Cochon, but I went to Martin Picard's Cabane a Sucre north of Montreal and it was aaammmmmmaaaaaazzzzzziiiiinnngggg. I once tried to make a hot sauce inspired by his salted apple martini, but failed. DH and I love going to Dunns for smoked meat and matzo ball soup. Gibby's is old school Old Montreal. It was the super fancy place that DH wanted to take me the first time we went to Montreal (he grew up outside Montreal).
Damn, I'm so envious of you going to Montreal. I miss it so hard. The last time I went was to Trevor Noah's show in 2019ish and before that in 2016 (right before DD2). DH and I used to go all of the time before kids. It's my favorite city in my region.

Ooooh Blue Nile sounds like exactly what we need. The girl friend LOVES Ethiopian and the closest Ethiopian restaurant to us is a bit of a hike. She would be so thrilled to get to an Ethiopian spot. Thank you for the suggestion!
I’ve been to Gibby’s - business trip. Definitely good but I don’t want to pay that bill (without work picking up the dime)!

Yeah that bill was a stupid "impressing the new girlfriend" bill. As the sensible wife I'd never be ok with that. There are a lot of other places I'd rather drop those $$$ in Montreal (not Club Supersex either tho).

If you want an awesome poutine place, check out the classic La Banquise on Rachel. What are your thoughts on breweries? That's usually where I end up. There's a new-ish one that's getting a lot of hype now called Messorem which is near Little Burgundy / Griffintown. Actually Griffintown has lots of amazing places if you want to get out of the typical St Laurent / Crescent St area.

We both love Dieu de Ciel and often end up there when we’re in Montreal and because it’s been so long since either of us have been we’ll likely hit it up for a drink. But that’s old school, I know.

Not sure if this has been recommended but we went to Monarque last time we were there - amazing atmosphere and the food is incredible! It’s on Rue saint Jacques.

Oh, and insanely expensive but worth it is Joe Beef. I went a couple years ago and one of the owners (David) was actually at the bar and he came and sat and chatted with us for an hour. We talked wine and Anthony bourdain mostly. My best restaurant experience ever.

Also Isle de Garde which was a really neat spot for a drink and has a bigger menu. Brasseur de Montreal is also in Griffintown. Can you tell I love craft beer?? haha... Unrelated to beer, I did an afternoon at Bota Bota which is a nordic spa in a converted container ship in the Old Port. It was really nice and relaxing, and then you can walk around old port afterwards as well - maybe the rooftop bar at Hotel Nelligan.

Which is okay, I’ll save that for the time being and focus on the bagels, and chicken and dim sum (oh my)! One of them (Le Bremner) is closed now, so you’d have to go to Garde Manger. Not the point, but I don’t eat meat and went to Au Pied du Cochon because family wanted to go when they visited and they had the best dessert I’ve ever eaten in any restaurant. My friends and I really like going to a lot of the wine bars and speakeasies, some of our favorites are Rouge Gorge, Pullman, Philemon, Nhau, cloakroom, 4e mur, most of those places have good food also. If you like Vietnamese, Ha is amazing Vietnamese is my favourite cuisine. This would be our perfect trip if we got in stellar Ethiopian and stellar Vietnamese. My goodness, I am so happy I asked the class for help!!!!!

Ethiopian and Vietnamese are booked for dinner one and two. We have a half day at Bota Bota. Massage, baths and champagne. Sounds like heaven!
Final dinner on the Sunday? I’m thinking a good pub in Old Montreal. Any thoughts on where we could go for revelry and good food!?
