My daughter has a stuffy/running nose, temp as high as 100.4, had a sore throat yesterday but not today, no cough. I did an at home test and am on the verge of an actual panic attack. Does this look like a positive result (sorry if the pic is massive).

It does look positive to me. Did you read this within 15 minutes?

It does look positive to me. Did you read this within 15 minutes? Yes, and it’s been over 30 now but the line hasn’t changed at all since about the 13 minute mark.

If this was a pregnancy test we would be congratulating you. I’d follow up with a PCR or another rapid tomorrow. Sorry 😞 I hope she feels better soon.

I don’t see a line at all… I even zoomed in.
I’d get a PCR test tomorrow.

That's very, very similar to the line we got on a Binax for my DD2 that was a (presumed) false positive. I got my whole house in for PCRs later that day and everyone was negative.
I do see a shadow of a line, but it is possibly an evaporation line. Get a PCR and try not to panic. (easier said than done, I know)

Agreed to follow up with either another at home test or pcr today, I can very faintly see a line but in my real world experience when binax’s test a true positive there was no mistaking it.

Follow up with a PCR. I hope your kiddo is okay, and it's not covid.
My 3 year old just had a positive Binax, but a negative PCR. Covid is such a mind fuck.

I don't know anyone that has gotten a true positive on an at home test, but I know like 6 people that have gotten false negatives. Anecdotal? Yes. But I'm not fucking with those at home tests.

Both my pediatrician and my OB strongly encourage regular home testing for symptoms that might not warrant a trip in for a PCR. Yea, I think the rapid tests serve a different purpose. Data seems to suggest they are pretty/very good at catching people at their most contagious period.

Anecdotally, my H got a positive on a BinaxNow test and followed up with a positive PCR. He tested too early with the first at home test, but they package two tests to be used 3-5 days apart. He turned the second at home test positive 2 days later.

Both my pediatrician and my OB strongly encourage regular home testing for symptoms that might not warrant a trip in for a PCR. Yeah I think someone linked a thread here or another covid thread about how, when people use them correctly, the at home tests are quite good at telling if you're actively contagious. I forget the exact wording. But people need to understand their purpose/limitations. Oops, thought this was the covid thread lol. The link is not here, but the big thread I think. They are great for catching asymptomatic positives in their first 1-2 days, where viral load and shedding is highest. For everything else they’re kinda meh, especially by the time someone is symptomatic. So they’re awesome for screening purposes, not good at all for diagnostic purposes.

Data seems to suggest they are pretty/very good at catching people at their most contagious period. I understand this. I'm sure my opinion is colored by the fact that testing is easy to come by where I am. I can walk in and get a rapid test 10 minutes from my house. The thing is, if I was feeling sick and took a rapid and it was negative, I'd still go for regular testing. I wouldn't assume I was negative if I had symptoms. So, IDK. And I don't think most people are using them to test asymptomatically before events, which is how people talk about using them here, for the most part.

So this is what I don't understand- at this point don't all symptoms warrant a PCR? There's such a wide range from a sniffle on up that could be Covid. A negative at home test, if you have symptoms, isn't very reassuring. To me, at least. I understand the point about it catching people at their most contagious.

In my mind, most people that are using them wouldn't get a PCR otherwise, whether it's because it's more of a hassle for one reason or another or because they don't think the symptoms are circumstances are serious enough for a PCR. So to me, it's preventing those people that are contagious from going out and doing stuff and spreading it, which seems like an important part of trying to curb spread. It may not catch everyone but it's catching the most contagious people.

For us, we've used them when the kids have had cold symptoms and tested negative on a PCR and then one of us starts getting sniffly. My husband and I don't go out and the kids are the only outside exposure we have on a regular basis. (I still make my husband get a PCR if he starts coughing or if it's been over a week since the kids had their colds because I'm paranoid.)

Yes, it does. Breathe. How old is she? She’s 10. I know she’ll be fine but the real issues are my H who’s currently doing chemo and would lose 2 weeks of treatment mid cycle. My MIL who just left our house to go home to WA for a bunch of dr appointments she’s had planned for months and also if she gets sick she’ll be 2 states away and alone.

So, it does look positive to me, but I really wouldn’t panic until I got PCR results back. How is she feeling? She’s stuffy and has a low grade temp but feels fine, was making iPad videos of herself dancing before bed last night.

I think the Binax having more false positives is better than false negatives.
I use them when I have no symptoms or known exposure but am going to be around someone like my mom or something. She’s vaccinated and not high risk but just to double check. If I got a positive I’d follow up with a PCR. If I had any symptoms I’d start with a PCR.

Nobody ever seems to do the binex tests in pairs according to their directions. Even if you get a positive you should follow with the 2nd test or a pcr. Around here I cant easily get a pcr test so weve used the binax in the 2 pk for cold symptoms except when we had a dr appt and could get pcr there.
I hate binax directions. Their examples of positives I cant see 2nd line on like 2 of the examples lol
