Hugs FlightView. If you feel comfortable, I’d love to hear more about your grandfather’s book.

I read The Wish by Nicholas Sparks. It wasn’t horrible but it was heavy and sad and typical him and I wonder if that’s just not my thing anymore despite enjoying other authors who write that

For any Stephen King fans, what are some of your favourites by him? I've only read Misery and Pet Sematary, but I've always wanted to read more of him. My favorites by him are The Stand and The Shining. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is short but super creepy. I also enjoyed 11/22/63, which isn’t his usual horror but it’s well written. I love The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon!

I just started The Maidens by Alex Michaelides and I'm finding it hard to get into. Has anyone read it, is it worth sticking out?

I finally read Tegan and Sara's High School. I shouldn't be surprised, because they're so talented, but it was really well done.
I started The Thirteenth Tale from my library sub box. Having a hard time getting into it.

I finished the The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires. It was definitely a fun read, and I've moved onto Outliers now. I hear Outliers referenced constantly and have never read anything by Malcolm Gladwell so I thought i'd give it a listen.

It was during a time when I was having trouble with a lot of books, so it could have been a me thing, but I think the dialogue was my problem.

Hugs FlightView. If you feel comfortable, I’d love to hear more about your grandfather’s book. My great grandmother moved from the lower 48 to the bush to teach in the 1930’s and my grandpa a teen at the time, flew an airplane up and is somewhat of a pioneer in Alaska bush flying. If anyone’s interested I can PM the title, it’s not for sale anywhere, except one local place.

I read The Ex Hex on vacation, and it was good for a vacation read. Just a cute, easy romance with a little bit of witchy stuff thrown in. I wouldn't say it was great, but it did the job.

kittyriot, I would have hated to have to discuss that with a book club - I would have nothing constructive to say lol mintyblueair, I've heard there is a cartoon - I might have to check it out because I feel like the visuals would be fun. The book just...wasn't. So wordy. adelbert, have you read any of Paul Tremblay books? Cabin at the End of the World got to me, as did Head Full of Ghosts. I read Cackle over the weekend and I adored it! I highly recommend it if you are looking for something cozy with a bit of spooky thrown in. It also has a solid "you go girl" vibe/message that I loved.

Nothing But Blackened Teeth comes out tomorrow and I'm hoping that scares me a bit.

I just started Neon Gods - I was really into the story when some explicit content made me realize that this is not one I can listen to at work. (I like the content, but sheesh, talk about secret embarrassment as students started to walk in)

I thought it was great, but others haven’t like it at all. I’m definitely in favor of putting books aside if they’re not your thing.

If it isn't catching me I don't have time for it. I often keep it on my TBR list and will go back at some point.

Thank you all who weighed in about The Maidens! I just got a notification that my hold on One Last Stop came in so I think I'm going to put it aside and start that instead. I've been in a groove reading and don't want to lost that with a mediocre book which seems to have a 50/50 rating

It was so so dumb and I thought the writing was terrible. I'm already feeling like the chapters have a formula - go and eat/drink with a friend/alone, do something illegal/unethical, tangent on greek mythology, speculate on whether you're being watched, repeat.

I finished House of Hollow and really enjoyed it. It is definitely disturbing so TW but I enjoyed the story and felt like the author did a great job describing the scene.

I breezed through Velvet Was The Night today and really enjoyed it. It’s not my normal kind of read (noir, pretty violent) but it’s also a bit of historical fiction which is very much my thing. It’s one of my book club reads this month, so I’m excited to talk about it.

I finished Mexican Gothic. 4 star read, but was also more sad and distributing than scary. Maybe covid has broken me lol. I tried to read Mrs Rochester's Ghost but couldn't even get more than a few chapters in. Too boring, without any great writing to help make up for it. Now I feel a little stuck. I have a bunch of physical books to read but none of them are horror/gothic and that's definitely the mood I'm in. Up for recommendations! I've heard Catherine House is a great horror/gothic/fever dream of a read. When the Reckoning Comes is also a great read, kind of like a blend of Kindred with Get Out.

it’s been awhile since i’ve checked in - having a hard time keeping up here and i just haven’t been able to read as much as i would like. i’m still on a bit of a thriller streak and have listened to a few of peter swanson books - before she knew him and every vow you break. before she knew him was decent but every vow you break was just way too far fetched for me. i also just finished a debut by a local (mn) author, catherine dang - nice girls. follows the murders of two girls from same town - it kept my interest throughout.
switching it up with the last summer at the golden hotel and i am loving it so far. i love multigenerational family dramas. listening to dark places by gillian flynn. i treated myself to a physical copy of the lincoln highway by amor towles - so that will be up next.

I just started The Second Life of Mirielle West by Amanda Skenandore. It’s about a rich woman that is diagnosed with leprosy. It’s inspired by a true story of a Louisiana leprosy hospital in the 1920s. I love historical fiction, and I’ve never read a book about leprosy before.

I finished The Other Me by Sarah Zachrich Jeng with almost half an hour to spare before my book club meeting tonight! A little sci if, a little suspense—I liked it for being outside of my genre comfort zone, but people who read a lot of suspense will probably find it kind of predictable. Nothing crazy but entertaining and interesting.

I finished The Sun Down Motel and I really enjoyed it. It stopped being scary pretty early on but I was invested in the mystery the whole way through. I really liked how the author used the time disorientation that comes from working the night shift to show how Carly and Viv got so lost in the mysteries they were trying to solve.
I've got The Huntress by Kate Quinn up next.

I just finished The Ninth House. A friend recommended it, and all he had to say was “paranormal New England” and I was in! I really liked it. Fair warning, it is the beginning of a series with no second book in sight. The author wrote Shadow and Bone as well, which I haven’t read but I know is popular. Guess she’s been busy with the TV series!

I’ve read several romcoms in the past week.
I read The Party Crasher by Sophie Kinsella. It was meh. Most of it takes place over one day and was kind of boring.
I also read Would Like to Meet by Rachel Winters. It’s kind of a tribute to “meet cutes” from famous movies. It was a perfectly fine romcom. Nothing terribly new or exciting but a fast read.
I read In Case You Missed It and am about halfway through One in a Million by Lindsey Kelk. Both of these are SUPER cute and very funny. I find the “com” part of romcoms to be mostly missing but these are both genuinely funny. They remind me a lot of Mhairi Macfarlane’s books. If you like a tame, sweet British romance, I’d recommend them.
