Hey CA folks, I was hoping we could have a thread to discuss the shit show that is the recall special election. My ballot is in the mail, so I need to start looking into it more. I’m firmly against the recall, thinking it’s a huge waste of money and time, but here we are. I know Newsom is advising Ds to not even answer the second question of who to vote in, which my initial reaction to that is that’s it’s a bad idea. It’s not a slam dunk that he won’t be recalled, especially if turnout is low for Ds. I know there are a million candidates but don’t know much about them, so I was wondering what others are thinking. I tried to watch the Kevin Paffrath guy’s YouTube pitch, who apparently has the highest polling and woof, it was like a bad late night infomercial. Also, any recommendations on outreach to try to stir up the Ds to know the Sept 14th date? jaygee, elle

We got our ballots yesterday and my husband dropped them off at the mailbox at 10:30 pm. We didn't put anyone for question 2
ETA I have postcards that I am sending out to Ds about voting

I am voting no on the recall and Kevin Paffrath for the replacement. I’m only marking him because I read he is polling ahead of any other Dems so if the recall wins it’s a shot in the dark that enough Dems put the same person and he is the replacement. I want to die thinking of Larry Elder being our gov but if the recall wins, I think that’s what we have until 2022.

I already answered in the weekly thread but it's basically what jaygee put above. I'm so angry and I really hope enough people vote against it. Not only am I beside myself at just the thought of Larry Elder becoming governor, even if only for the year, I'm realy concerned this will create a pattern of the CA GOP starting a recall with every new Dem governor. So stupid and such a waste of money. It's all so infuriating.

Why did Newsom's campaign send out messaging to not even answer the second question? I mean, I get wanting people to vote no (I certainly will) but that also seems like a risky move in the event he is recalled. I sure hope, worse case scenario, if it isn't Newsom then Newsom would want someone other then the shit show that are the republicans that are listed!

I'm so furious about the whole damn thing. Like, can we just focus on getting Covid and Delta under control and keeping our kids safe and fed in school and not dick around with this bullshit. Stupid.

I’m really questioning the CA Dem party on this one. I know it’s a United front message but I think it’s wrong. It would have been better if they just said vote no on the recall and nothing about question 2

Apparently I'm overly optimistic and think that they (the democratic party) has learned something from the last 5+ years when it's apparent they have not.

It would have been better if they just said vote no on the recall and nothing about question 2 I think they were hoping to avoid what happened with Davis during his recall. If I remember correctly the CA Dem party message was vote no but vote Bustamante to replace him if the worst happens. Unfortunately that sort of nuanced messaging was lost on the public back then. I do think people in general are paying a bit more attention these days but they didn't adjust their messaging accordingly. I honestly don't know what will happen though, unfortunately Covid was a gift to the CA GOP's recall effort.

I apparently just want to block that Davis fiasco from my brain, but this makes perfect sense in an unfortunate way.

It’s so dumb. There was a petition to recall Newsom before he even took the oath of office. Then COVID hit and it got new life.
I’m in an apocalyptic head space and not really paying much attention to much of anything. So I appreciate this thread and everyone discussing question 2, I hadn’t heard anything about that.

I lived through the last recall but I was so naive. I lived in SF and I remember listening to local exit polls from SF and every person was like “oh hell no to the recall” so I was absolutely floored when it passed.
Fun fact. My diploma is singed by Gray Davis.

We got our ballots this weekend. H is meticulously researching the D candidates so I guess we will answer question 2. Not answering seems very risky.

I don’t know if I have it in me to research +1. My H usually does all this stuff for us and isn't able to and I 1000% don't have it in me presently.

Ok guys look how cute my wonky H is. This is what he sent me - the results of his research with candidates ranked top to bottom. Do keep in mind that we are super socialist progressive so that’s informing his rankings.

He looked at Dems and NPP, not Rs or Greens.

I'm so mad Kevin Paffrath is leading the polls. I don't like him. 😭

I'm so mad Kevin Paffrath is leading the polls. I don't like him. 😭 I am too. I don’t like him, but I feel like I’m going to end up voting for him for question 2 to avoid the dreaded D split vote. This is way worse than the 3rd party dilemma. I feel like I’m throwing away my vote. This recall is such BS!
