Made it! Mask compliance went from 100% the whole trip to about 60% at our final destination podunk airport near my hometown despite a mask mandate in the airport. #notshocked My mom says almost no one masks up in the stores anymore (although she has started again), but when we go I definitely am. I wonder if it'll start any conversations. Enjoy your time with your family! Your mum must be so happy to see you and the kids!

It seems the deterioration of the situation in Afghanistan really accelerated overnight. They've got to get people out of there. Get them to Qatar and then worry about paperwork. Pete Aguilar (d-ca) just said the same thing

And I don't remember if this was already mentioned by the Afghan president has fled the country. It won't be long now.
And I should have said 40 years ago in that previous post. Reagan era US and the Soviet Union are pretty much directly responsible for this.

Chuck Todd just asked Sec Blinken why they didn’t just wait until winter to withdrawal because Taliban are less active in the winter.
I really think that is underestimating the Taliban and is a very naive “gotcha” framing.

I really think that is underestimating the Taliban and is a very naive “gotcha” framing. They brought this up on Capehart. Something to do with trumps May withdrawal date and Biden pushing it to august and the fact that since the Afghan govt wasn’t invited to to the table during negotiations which demoralized troops. It was a lot.

It was always going to end this way. It's soul crushing that so many people (Afghans in particular, but also American service members) had to die for nothing. That my classmates at my very poor high school joined up because of promises of income and education and so many of them now have long term PTSD and are held with very little regard when they're not being propped up for political ads (if they made it home at all) because of something that never should have and never had to happen.

It's just all been such a waste. A waste of lives, time, effort, and money. 20 years of war, for what?

Saying this is a huge intelligence failure and we didnt expect this to happen so quickly is something.
the previous administration signaled when they would withdraw, the current administration signaled when they would withdraw. WHAT did they think was going to happen, that suddenly the Taliban was gonna roll over and show its belly? I'm not in intel, but I would bet a billion internet dollars that the Taliban has been planning this from the day 45 announced his intentions and only negotiated with them

On Afghanistan, anyone who has studied the history of the region cannot be surprised by this. It was never going to end well the way it was done. Sounds fatalistic, but I find this not at all surprising. I think now it's going to come down to two possibilities: a "peace" with things going back to how they were pre-2001, or a civil war type situation because some who got a taste of more freedom (and/or power) don't want to give it up.

I wrote to all my members of congress and my governor about expanding asylum and refugee status. I only mentioned Afghanistan but should have mentioned the others. Regardless, it felt like something I could do. also, I love Cori Bush.

A smidgen good news in a tough weekend. The USDA is expected to announce a permanent increase to SNAP benefits, approximately 1 year ahead of schedule. The average increase is 27%, or about $35. The article has an interesting history of the USDA's "thrifty" food plan and how this adjustment is intended to reflect how we cook and eat. www.nytimes.com/2021/08/15/us/politics/biden-food-stamps.html

Omg that is disgustingly low. With how much food has increased with covid its almost a wash.
