This. So much this.
Bezos thinks he can throw his $5 at Van Jones and we’ll all shut up. What about paying your fair share of taxes year after year and let the government use it sustainably to create long term change?

Bezos and crew returned safely. I've always been a strong advocate of the space program, so for me all endeavors are exciting and a step into the future. You’re joking right? They spent a couple seconds just above the upper atmosphere. We have astronauts living on a space station, multiple rovers on Mars. How is perfecting the billionaire joyride a step into the future? Except for the future where the rich leave us peons behind to die on the planet they destroyed.

I believe I can have my own opinion on civilian efforts in space, and for me, seeing Wally Funk achieve her Women in Space dream that had been long denied , and Oliver Daemen - well, it made me happy. And I had no issue with John Glenn taking another ride in space when he was, what, 76-77. That's just my opinion, again.
Then again, I would be the person voting to spend a hell of a lot more tax money on the US space program. That's not popular either in many places.

They didn't do anything that hasn't been done before. They built themselves some expensive toys. Musk and SpaceX are at least providing a service to the space station we used to have to outsource to Russia because of NASA funding cuts. ETA: This does not give a Musk a pass on other things. At all.

There are just quite a few of us who have differing opinions, which we expressed. I do agree that NASA should be better funded, though.

I would happily throw more money at space programs AFTER we make sure every kid in this country has food on the plate and a roof over their head.
Priorities, this doesnt inspire innovation. We KNOW how to go to space, we've known how to for decades.

I'm fine with funding NASA and space exploration. And obviously I want us to serve people, and do the infrastructure work, and reduce poverty, and improve education, and advance science.
Defense is where I'd hack and slash. Hack that, close tax loopholes, and maybe we could focus on making progress on things that matter. Which, to me, includes space.
But not this billionaire ego circus.

It really is something that we always have to increase our defense spending "just in case" but Healthcare, pandemic, infrastructure and social safety net spending can be cut at will and if catastrophe happens, oh well!! Gosh, what could be the difference???

Wally Funk is the only redeeming part of that space flight. I'm happy she finally got to go. I'm disappointed it was under these circumstances.

(sorry if this was already posted and I missed it) He totally did it because of the negative flack he's getting for his joyride. Good for those getting food that need it. But him paying his taxes or a living wage would go a lot farther.

Is it in here where we're talking about philanthropy shouldnt be used in place of paying taxes? Much like the robber barons of old building hospitals, libraries and museums to redeem themselves?
I mean great that hes doling out some bucks to Van and Jose, BUT pay your share of taxes Jeff because that will help the root cause instead of polishing your image.

But him paying his taxes or a living wage would go a lot farther. Performative philanthropy. I’m sure the money will be put to good use. He could give this amount to like 500 other charities and still be mega rich.

I will not extend any form of appreciation for what these billionaires are doing. I don't even really care if citizens went with that also benefited from it. We have so many problems in this country that the money billionaires are spending on shit like this could be taxed instead and used for the good of MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.
But no lets have a fun 5 minute space adventure just because we make obscene amounts of moneys when we take a shit.
