If both FTEs and contractors have mandate, vaccination rates in this area will be super high . As a parent of 3 kids too young to be eligible, I love it. I’m so relieved about it! FCPS just announced universal masking for all students and teachers as well, which is better than I expected. I have my tin foil hat on so tight bc on Monday they sent a cagey "we'll send mask guidance later this week" and then BAM, CDC guidance change.

Do you have a link to the announcement? I kept seeing people say this in FB groups yesterday, about FCPS masking, but I can't find a source. Yes! I just got it this morning. www.fcps.edu/node/43868YAY!

Complaining is complaining. Everyone does it here and there and I’m not going to get upset about it. If you’re complaining about wearing a mask it means you’re wearing a mask and that’s all I want. Agreed. "I'm not wearing masks again" is very different to me than "I'm doing it, but it's a bummer." It's normal to me to be disappointed, especially after how mental health has suffered. I also think venting is important, and typing your disappointment on an internet message board seems a pretty chill way of coping. Though that's also true of those frustrated with the complaining so I guess I've come full circle 🙃 i was definitely annoyed with the I'm not masking because I don't have to, it's the only carrot i have mentality. Just complaining about wearing a mask doesn't bug me because they are in fact still wearing the mask. I am also a huge grump today too.

Welp, school district is staying with the word "recommended" for masks. Which means they won't be required.

I see NY is going to require all patient facing healthcare workers to be vaccinated and all state employees have to be vaccinated or regularly tested. I know there’s going to be a lot of pushback locally and many nurses have already talked about walking out before this news even broke.
I’m assuming they’d have to submit their vaccine card as proof?

Can the federal government mandate masks in schools? Or just suggest it via the CDC guidance? I have zero hope of getting a mask mandate in Texas unless the federal government does something. I've reached the pissed off at the world stage of the pandemic again. This sucks so much for all the families who have been trying so hard to do things right. Mandates aren’t legal. Jurisdiction and all that

It’ll hold up as it isn’t vaccination or you are fired. You have an out if you don’t want it

I think I missed this detail yesterday. This......sucks. This is what makes me nervous about kids in in-person school. You can have vaxxed teachers but they may inadvertently and unknowingly pass it on to the unvaxxed. And wouldn't it stand to reason that the higher viral load of Delta might change what we believe to be true about chance of infection in kids?

Our Dept of Health just made the announcement moments ago that they are recommending masks for everyone in schools, including those who are vaccinated. That is a relief that they made the announcement, now just to wait for what our district will do with that info.
Also, our school board has a number of open seats this next election. Applications to run are due in two weeks. Am I totally insane for contemplating running? I have a connection on the board currently, she is a friend of my mom's, so I could pick her brain about it too.

How it applies to remote employees who don’t even work in NYS and that it’s BS and that the testing piece is a lie just to get this not thrown out.

I know it is a mostly thankless position but I do have an interest in helping the district and kids and I feel as a newer parent to the school district world, that could be desirable. I just have to figure out a few things. One of which is whether I can handle the time commitment, and another is whether my job permits me to do this (since I am a public official technically). I also have to decide whether I want to commit to campaigning because holy shit I hate promoting myself lol. Luckily for me, my mom has been a campaign manager for over 10 political campaigns in her past life so she's all on board to be mine, haha.

Just make sure you’ll have time to take good care of yourself, too.

willow, it is definitely a thankless job that comes with a ton of headaches (as are all governmental roles, really), but I truly believe school boards are probably the key element in the viability of a city/town as well as the schools themselves. I think you would bring so much to your community if you chose to run. From what I understand from our local boards (grammar and high school), it is a considerable time commitment. Especially over the last decade and I don't foresee that commitment dropping anytime soon. Financial and legal experience is great as well as the patience of Job and a very tough skin. But, first, I would say check out if you have conflicts of interest. I had to do that just for my condo board and my private company employer. But thank you for even considering a run to serve your community.

greykitty and easier you bring up good points to consider. I will be talking to my mom's friend about the time commitment for sure. And waiting on a call with my boss now to ask if it is ok as it relates to my job. I work in a different county than I live, and I do nothing related to education with my position so I am thinking it will be ok. We'll see!

richard I will let you know for sure if I do! I was looking at donations from the past election and the amounts were WAY lower than I was thinking (I always just think of big political races lol) so it may actually be less scary than I think. Especially in a pandemic when I have a reasonable excuse not to go door to door, which is the part that really gives me pause. I'll do everything else just don't ask me to solicit face to face like that, lol. Sorry for taking over the COVID thread. But honestly the pandemic is what is sort of driving me to want to do this. Having a voice for the people in the district with young kids and making the best and safest decisions, etc.

This is good. We need more if this. Make it harder for eligible people to remain unvaccinated and resume their normal life.

Going door to door helps but it isn't a make or break.
