Do you have a link to where you read this? In trying to find it, I realize I must've heard it on the radio, not read it, but it was Dr. Redlener discussing the potential issues even with previously deemed safe public outdoor gatherings. Here's a tweet with a clip where he appears on MSNBC discussing the Delta variant. So at 1000x more viral load, that has to impact can a vaccinated person catch delta variant covid and have enough viral load to spread it to someone else??!!

Now I’m wondering about the wedding I’m going to in August. It’s going to be a very outdoor event and weekend but we shall see about numbers.

Andy Slavitt said the change in the spike protein that makes delta more contagious also makes it easier for the vaccine to fight. The viral load shouldn't matter if infection doesn't occur because the virus won't replicate, right?

Andy Slavitt said the change in the spike protein that makes delta more contagious also makes it easier for the vaccine to fight. The viral load shouldn't matter if infection doesn't occur because the virus won't replicate, right? Pfizer, at least, is very effective against it. I assume Moderna too. It’s spike protein is very “sticky”, which is both what the vaccine alerts the immune system to and how the virus enters our cells. So a vaccinated person’s immune cells find it easily. The problem is that it is replicating earlier, much faster, and higher in the respiratory tract. And it takes time for all parts of our immune system to kick in after initial infection. All of that combined means that there can be a lot more virus before the immune system has fully responded, so it has to work harder. People are also being exposed to much more virus (both because it replicates faster and it is replicating in a part of the airway where it is easily passed on with breathing and coughing), so it’s easier for an exposure to be over the threshold of what will make a person ill. It still has the same physical properties as the other variants, so masking and social distancing are both very effective mitigations. Outdoors is still a lot safer than indoors. But it will take a smaller/shorter amount of contact to spread Delta, so outdoors on its own is not going to be as effective a protectant as with the other variants, especially in crowds.

I do scientist and can't make heads or tails of that article. 1) very small sample size, 2) they had like 5 different protocols within that small sample size, 3) they did qualitative interpretation of like 749 symptoms including detailed dream descriptions. 😳 I... don't even know what to do with that. To compare: the big vaccines did trials with 30000 subjects all getting the same protocol to get enough statistically meaningful data.

Oh yeah I was under no impression that it was a valid study, my eyes just cross when I read scientific writing so it’s hard for me to focus and read it lol. I appreciate those of you who can break it down for me! The dream part really did amuse me. Also the part at the end where it almost became a sermon?

Just got off the phone with future SIL. They are bummed, but understand. My parents had initially talked about coming down to help out for a few days since I'll be alone, but apparently cases on Cape are the highest in the state right now and they don't feel comfortable making the trip. They were going to be N's care if I had gone, so definitely for the best I'm staying behind but I still feel terrible about it.
I'm going to call their venue this week - I know the plan is to hang out at the venue for a while before the actual ceremony begins so I'm going to see if I can do something, like send champagne or snacks. We're going to see if friends of ours would be willing to facetime me during the ceremony so N and I can watch.

Just got back from the grocery store that has a higher percentage of mask wearers than other ones around here. There didn't appear to be many more than normal. Sigh. I was really hoping more people might go back to wearing them on their own with an uptick in cases.

PDQ
For some reason there will be a public viewing and service this week. In an area that is spreading delta, for a man who died of covid, in a hospital that wasn’t effective in testing or diagnosing a severe covid case when it was brought it with ALL of the classic symptoms of covid. The family is large enough, but he was a prominent member of the community, who lived there his entire life. ::throws up hands::
His siblings will have time alone with him, as well as the family prior. I’m sad to have to miss, but I’m absolutely certain he wouldn’t want me to potentially expose his great nephews to covid.
All of this is reminding me of the outbreaks in the larger cities and what was suspected (or maybe that was in my own thoughts ?) would happen in rural areas at some point. ::deep breath::

Bit legit @minerva you keep talking that sexy science girl.
