My likes today are hugs ❤️ Dr. Cox I’ve enrolled DS in a few Outschool classes over summer and have been pleasantly surprised at how good they are. I can send you a referral code if you’d like.

And the saddest part is it didn't have to be like this. Multiple vaccines and millions want nothing to do with them. I feel sick thinking about all the kids whose parents won't get them vaccinated. That disgusts me. It sounds cavalier, and I truly don't mean it that way - but the only way this is going to change is if a strain starts killing more children. And even then, this country has been more than happy to sacrifice children in other ways (gun control), so that probably won't change anything either. LOOK AT ME, WHAT WITH ALL OF MY POSITIVITY TODAY. Imma sit on your bench.

In fairness, everything we're seeing shows that the vaccines ARE protecting against new variants - but it's going to level out to "this is just going to protect you from death" and not from actually getting sick, transmitting it, and having long haul symptoms. And the saddest part is it didn't have to be like this. Multiple vaccines and millions want nothing to do with them. I feel sick thinking about all the kids whose parents won't get them vaccinated. That disgusts me. This idea absolutely ENRAGES my grandma. She rants about how in 1962 she had to go to the ER with my 2 year old mom who had a super bad case of the measles, because the vaccine came out literally the next year. She had my infant aunt in her arms while my grandpa was away on business and was worried sick about my mom. She cannot fathom people not vaccinating their (unless otherwise not eligible) children.

lemondrop That last like was me agreeing with you. It shouldn't have to come that and the fact that children possibly dying isn't even a fucking guarantee that people will get their asses in gear is so GD depressing. Even then, what is the trigger? People don’t take the flu seriously either and it isn’t new or without vaccine.

People don’t take the flu seriously either and it isn’t new or without vaccine. Whoever named the stomach virus "flu" really did influenza a huge disservice, because there are swaths of people who don't get that the "flu" (influenza) and a stomach virus are different things. I think it all comes down to the "well I know someone who had it and it wasn't that bad". There is a cognitive dissonance that doesn't allow them to understand that the person who didn't have it that bad is one of the lucky ones, and they very easily could been one of the not so lucky ones. Like how some people don't give a fuck about gun control until someone they love is killed in a mass shooting and then they're like, "oh wait..."

Dr. Cox can you see if there are any local homeschool groups on fb? We have one that’s quite large and even though we chose not to homeschool has been a great resource for even events/items that are coming up. Our homeschool groups here are very conservative, anti-vaxx, anti-mask, etc. Unfortunately. Same here. We're secular homeschoolers and I discovered quickly that the few local groups in my area were not for me unfortunately. I'd probably spend all my time fighting with them and defending public schools lol.

Its not going to change peoples minds if the civid case numbers go up cause its just a cold and everybody gets colds. Similar to the just the flu no big deal folks.
like az had 300 new cases yesterday and 20 new deaths. When (not if) That number of deaths goes up and it skews % if you get it you die doesnt it?
Of course today is almost 2k cases and 20 deaths. Nobody in az seems to care that 20 deaths a day is 600 a month is 36000 a year.
schools cant mandate masks. Cant mandate vaccines or testing. Last yr university made everyone take a test to move into dorm and random testing of students to catch asymptomatic so their numbers on campus stayed very low. This school year will be shit show.

My neighbor is 93. She had polio as an adult right along side one of her four kids. She was telling me a story about how she had to be isolated in her house, how when a nurse stopped by they basically stood in the door, etc, she was in a super rural community so medical care was not exactly top notch. She doesnt understand not getting a vaccine at all.

Hi I’m usually just in GD but I’m branching out a bit! I teach in IL and my district just said they’re requiring non-vaccinated individuals to wear masks. So my school, which is just prek-2nd grade, will see all students masked since obviously the younger kids are not eligible for vaccine. But how in the world will they enforce that with the older kids in the district? There are 600 kids in the Jr High-no one will know. And basically you’re sharing vax status-if someone is masked, you assume they don’t have the vaccine. The damn CDC should’ve just said, hey, in person school is a priority, to keep students safe and schools open, everyone in a school building needs to be masked, regardless of status.

Does anyone have a link that tracks infection rates in kids? Or at least can segregate that data out? I'm having trouble finding data specific to littles.

Okay so the Vegas crew was 7 guys. All vaccinated. 1 guy confirmed positive- Pfizer. Symptomatic, cold symptoms. 1 guy confirmed positive- J and J vaccine. Absolutely miserable symptoms. Nausea/vomiting/ exhaustion where he can barely get out of bed. Another guy symptomatic (not sure of symptoms) but negative on rapid antigen, awaiting results of a PCR test since he is symptomatic. I think also Pfizer vaccine.
Another guy no symptoms confirmed negative, Moderna vaccine. The other 3 no symptoms but may get tested anyway just to check.
Interesting breakdown. The guy having terrible symptoms has a young baby and a toddler at home and has been quarantined in his office. I’m so nervous for his wife and kids. This guy also happens to be one of the fittest, seemingly healthiest guys we know.

MH usually has a 3 day optional funish work trip up to VA in October every year. They didn't last year, no word on this year yet. But I think I'm going to ask him not to go even if they do it. DS might have had 1 shot by late October but not both.

I am very, very worried about the delta variant (and others) causing more serious illness in kids. My colleagues and I think this will be a bad flu season and if kids start getting seriously sick with COVID, our hospital (and many others) will be in a desperate position of not enough beds and not enough staff.

We aren't going back to the office full time until September, but we have a "soft open" going on right now, so people can drift back in and get re-adjusted before coming back full time. My team decided to all go in today, have lunch together, etc.
My office is a time capsule from March 12, 2020 and it's SO. WEIRD.
Also typing at an actual keyboard instead of on a laptop for the first time in a year and a half feels very strange.

H had his first day back to office. They have an open concept layout so every other chair had a red dot. Same with the sinks and urinals in the bathroom. The weird thing was that they have a really nice cafeteria where they would have made to order stations for sandwiches, pasta, etc. All of those were closed, and only the buffet stations were available. Seems backwards

I went in and worked at my desk for the first time last month and I forgot I had two humongous monitors. I've been working on this small laptop since the shut down and I felt positively Lilliputian sitting in front of the monitors. I texted my assistant to ask when I got new bigger monitors and she laughed at me and said those are the same ones I've always had. It's like working in front of a billboard.

Having two monitors again is so great but they are HUGE. (And by huge I mean bigger than my laptop screen, they are by no means abnormally sized. )

I stopped working off laptop screens like a week into wfh. I still had to use the keyboard of it for like a year before they gave me a regular keyboard. But everyone brought home their dual monitors (which is great but also a beast to find desk space for as they are 2 24” ones)

H is the opposite. He has 2 nice big monitors for home and yesterday he complained about the ones at work being smaller and blurry.

I missed lemondrop ’s posts. Can someone message me the estimated timeline for kids aged 8+? My boys are 8 and 11. This is the one time I’m very glad school in MN doesn’t start until after Labor Day. I’m hoping they can at least get 1 vaccine in before back to school. I also do not think there will be a supply issue. When 12+ was approved, it was fully open, no appointments needed. All DD’s friends were vaccinated that same week. Pm'd. Me too please? I'm dying to get DD1 (all of them really, but she's out school ager) vaccinated.
