Tokyo Olympics to be held without spectators The Tokyo Olympics will be held without spectators, the organizers said, after Japan declared a new state of emergency that will continue through the end of the Games due to a rise in Covid-19 infections. Hundreds of athletes and officials from around the world have already arrived for the Olympics, which open on July 23. Foreign spectators were ruled out in March, but the organizers had intended to allow stadiums and arenas to be around half capacity with local fans. link

We’re borrowing my parents’ 30 yo pop-up camper to go camping at a lake in upstate NY this summer. The camper has been very well maintained and is in good shape, but it’s basically an antique. I’m amazed it’s still kicking and thrilled that I can use it with my kids!

I feel bad for the athletes families that can't be there.

Yeah, I'm not sure why Ken Klippenstein posted it like that, it definitely reads as a recent occurrence. I had to Google myself to double check it wasn't a different Turning Point person, but I immediately thought - didn't he already die?

I hate the world. CCD (which I already really only send DD to because of my parents) said masks are optional in the fall since that’s what the Catholic schools are doing (and if I’m not comfortable I can homeschool it and still pay the same).
My best friend’s mother is panicking because her daughter’s dance class just announced no masks in the fall. (Her daughter loves dance but is high risk.)
Our superintendent has been hinting he’d like no masks in the fall and because the NJ governor chickened out, he could if he wanted.
A group of concerned parents are starting a petition to present at the next BOE meeting. Both districts around us are requiring masks so hoping that puts pressure on him. It is all so enraging.

Trinity Health is officially mandating all employees of their systems nationwide be vaccinated against covid. Good. My employer is officially mandating it as of Sept. just announced last week - applies to every employee - even remote. I think we are up to 80% vaccinated. Im curious what’s going to happen in a nosy way. I know some hold outs.

H works for a large bank. Employees are starting back next week. Was supposed to be 2 groups that each work 2 days a week and alternating Fridays. While working remotely, productivity was up and their main reason for going into the office was to be with your coworkers, blah blah blah. But only 1/2 of H's team is in his building. He has a guy in Seattle, 2 in NY and another in Ohio. Oh and there is no assigned seats. It is come in and pick a desk so how are teams supposed to be able to work together? 🤔

Well now the damn has broken with Trinity, other med groups are following here. we have only have a few 'systems' locally, a trinity hospital among them, the smallest of the 3 just announced all employees must be vaxed by Sept. Now the largest needs to fall in line. Which I think they will, they are also the states largest employer so hopefully that gets our rates up a bit.

It will be interesting to see what the north and east sides do now.

Looks like Pfizer is working towards a booster shot. I'm just going to watch to see what all happens, but I think I was figuring a booster would be coming down the road. I wonder if Moderna is on this trail as well. The companies say they have demonstrated that a third dose of their vaccine, given six months after the second, increases neutralizing antibodies five to tenfold against the original virus and the so-called Beta variant, which was first identified in South Africa. The booster was also found to be safe. link

I am waiting for my employer to say something because many of us are at or close to 6 months out. I’m hoping for a fall booster.

Damn it. I was really hoping I wouldn't ever have to get another covid shot. I'll do it, because it's better than the alternative, but ugh.

My six months out will be early October. I wonder if there's going to be any protocol around getting other vaccines around the same time as the Covid booster. I typically get my flu shot around that time. Like will I have to wait a month in between them?

I just hope that we'll have the distribution system tweaked better to ensure that people, especially higher risk folks, who want to be vaccinated are able to do so fairly easily and quickly. Not other round of long distance trips or sitting on computers for days on end looking for an appointment.
And, of course, we need to know how this will work for folks in the US who got J&J or Moderna - mix and match ok? Moderna right behind Pfizer?

In our hospital 'system' statewide some are Trinity and some are not. I'm at one of the ones that's not but I wonder if they will follow as well with mandating vaccines. I honestly hope they do.
We just got a voluntary survey to inform them of our vaccine status so something is coming. It said vaccinated people may not always have to wear masks after they finish gathering the info but I can't imagine that would include patient facing areas. I will continue wearing mine at work either way.
There are quite a few people on my unit not vaccinated so this will be interesting.

Well hopefully they figure out the booster thing soon, I'm at 6 months in just over a week. And also had Moderna so hopefully they will be doing the same. I wonder if you could get the Pfizer booster if you had Moderna?

I'm worried that a lot of people aren't going to get the booster.

I think it'll be a push to get the boosters widely distributed - especially if they're not still 'free' and if it's a hassle to get an appointment. And IMO that's even for the people who really pushed to get the first series, sadly.
And then we may have a bad flu season as well - I know I had a lovely fantasy of a combo flu shot/covid booster. Hopefully that's still a possibility. Or at least not a real logistical challenge vis a vis timing the two vaccines.

I went to a retirement get together for a team member last night. It was at a bar (we rented a room off the main bar). I’d say about 90% of the people were vaxxed. And now my brain can’t stop spinning that I did something wrong.

Well not to muddy the booster issue - although it really is early days.... But in an unusual move, two top federal agencies said Americans don't need boosters yet and said it was not up to companies alone to decide when they might be needed. Hours after Pfizer issued its statement, the FDA and Centers for Disease and Control issued a joint statement saying Americans do not need booster shots yet. "Americans who have been fully vaccinated do not need a booster shot at this time," they said. link

Is it just me or is it kind of annoying that we are discussing boosters when young kids aren’t eligible yet? Not to mention half the world has no access? Maybe we should work on that first.
