I’m done trying to play with them. They don’t want to do anything but obstruct, so FUCK THEM. End the filibuster and shove through democratic legislation NOW. Fucking spineless cowards. I hope Sicknick haunts their dreams.

This made me feel sick. And more evidence of the false narrative people have about "a few bad apples". This whole county was fucked over and people looked the other way. Everyone knew but no one cared.

Are Dems just playing politics right now? Like setting up the situations to point to how Rs obstructed everything good the Dems supposedly tried to do? Sounds cynical but... the fact that they *could* find a way to do the good things and haven’t yet... suspicious. How do you mean? They can't nuke the filibuster without 51 votes and they don't have 51 votes for that Yep. They need Manchin and Sinema on it.

Yep. They need Manchin and Sinema on it. And that’s the literal only way they can pass good stuff? Depends heavily on the stuff. Some things can pass through reconciliations with a simple 51 vote majority, but it is limited in its use and only applies to pretty specific types of legislation.

Schumer already used reconciliation to pass the Covid relief bill and has said he will use it wherever he needs to and can. It's just a question of whether and for how long they try bipartisanship first.
He's bringing S1 ( the big transformative voting rightsbill) to the floor in June , and it'll fail, but that one can't be passed through reconciliation because rules. So they would have to nuke the filibuster to end the 60 vote requirement, but they can't do that without 51 votes.

And I hope I'm not coming off as tetchy or argumentative, I'm truly neither, my children are arguing to the ends of the earth. So if I'm coming off any type of way I'm sorry, it's not you, it's them.

Everyone can agree on weed. Wait what? There is no way a federal law making marijuana legal is going to happen with this Congress.

Everyone knew but no one cared. Not only did no one care but so many were willingly supporting and using this guy's actions to their advantage. It's sickening and I have no doubt this has happened in many precincts all over the country. It was all awful but I hope they can at least find the murderer(s) of all those poor women. I mean I know it's unlikely, even though it seems obvious who is responsible. But damn.

Is anyone interested in an international (as in countries that aren’t the Us) news thread (weekly or monthly?) or just talk about it here? WE often discuss it here, but I see nothing wrong with having a dedicated thread too. Some people might be more interested in international affairs and not want to wade through the other stuff.

Woof. Spain! What were you thinking? I am zero percent surprised. This is European racism at it's finest -literally devaluing an equality "effort". Portugal is similar in that people are like whoa there is no racism here!!! sure maria, they just segregate all the immigrants and refugees from former colonies into the same tiny neighborhoods without great access to the jobs and talk about Brasilians the same way that asshole Americans talk about Mexicans. Nevins that we have a shrinking population and desperately need the younger labor.

Could I be pointed to good, non-academic-language couched discussions on DEI, especially in schools and the local suburb/town level? I'm seeing more and more discussions in local social media. I have the real impression that a lot of the language is obscuring ideas that many, if not most, either could get behind or already believe in at some level.
And, that, again, far right commenters are getting their arguments across in vivid, simple language that people don't always pick apart.
Also, I have the feeling a lot of votes in the midterms will reflect on how DEI in the schools, especially, is explained.

Where is my girl Peekaru ? Why is it that grocery prices rose during a pandemic and it was a supply chain issue, but now that they remain higher it's because Joe Biden is an evil inflation monster? And how did the evil inflation monster raise gas prices but also have them about the same as they were last Memorial day? Plus on the heels of a pipeline hack.... TIL what Decoration Day actually was and how it became Memorial Day. I knew it was the precursor of Memorial Day, but didn't realize the literal tie in to decorating graves of fallen soldiers. And all because I was watching weened Today show. link

This is such a shit talking point, fear mongered for decades by screaming about housing prices and mortgages. I honestly wish that we would let some true market correction happen. as for the gas prices, we have subsidized prices anyway, so keeping them level isn’t surprising at all. See: cost of petrol in Europe.

Remember the 70's? When mortgage rates for even those with terrific jobs and savings were running 18%? I don't think memories of those lovely days should be discounted, but I also don't think we didn't learn anything. Although I kind of still miss Paul Volker in many ways. But that's another reason I'm happy a lot of people in the Administration are 'old' and can remember that far back LOL Having said that, I was just thinking of the $2.00 gas last summer, and every week I'm a little surprised at grocery prices. Then I think of that lovely ship blocking the canal and doing its bit to mess up supply lines. ... Today, prices for everything from gasoline to groceries are surging as the economy roars back from the pandemic recession. And that’s raising concerns in some quarters about whether the United States is headed back to the awful economic days of the 1970s, when the country was gripped by double-digit inflation that required painful action by the Federal Reserve. ... link

Not even in history classes? Or stories from your parents about buying houses back then when they look at present day mortgage rates? Then again I worked in the finance industry so a fair amount of attention was spent on historical economic cycles.

Not even in history classes? Or stories from your parents about buying houses back then when they look at present day mortgage rates? Then again I worked in the finance industry so a fair amount of attention was spent on historical economic cycles. I don’t remember the 70s, as I was negative years old. Of course I am familiar with the influences of the the high interest rates. I do think it’s critically important to point out, that though actual interest rates are still very low, individuals are still being impacted by inflation but not governmental inflation. Those crazy interest rates were really only for 3 years, and that effectively inverted the yield curve, which led to a tighter monetary policy, which led to the recession in the 80s. Most of the key factors in the 70s inflation story exist in today’s economy, but we don’t have to worry about decoupling the dollar from the gold standard. Lending is still extremely loose, so yes, buying a house is cheap. BUT heres the crux of the issue, for me at least, there is a huge huge group that has been so impacted by rising cost of living and stagnated wages that they can’t even begin to think about buying a home, or hope to pay off staggering student loan debt. Student loans are, on average, at a 6% fixed rate. Prime is at 5, short term bonds are maybe at 2, and savings and money markets are at .5. These are untenable numbers, something will have to give and instead of being able to buy something cheaply, being able to make money on money may help bring a huge swath of people out of debt. It should help force wages up as well

Looks like Schumer is trying to make Manchin and Sinema blink Good. They need to feel some consequences. I get why they are both against ending the filibuster. As it stands, they both have a ridiculous amount of political power, both for their individual votes and as power brokers with the moderate Republicans. But it has become so obvious that the filibuster is being used to disenfranchise voters and prevent basic civil rights reforms that the vast majority of Americans support.

She did a great job tying Memorial Day into Civil War history.
