Hi. My mom came over today and we took the kids to the lake. Well actually, we started to but I forgot my camera at home so we had to turn back around and the it started raining. So we waited a bit, fed the kids lunch and played. Attempted the lake again and finally it was a success! We've also been drinking wine since about 1pm. And I convinced DH I want to go out to eat and not cook.
I sort of love today.

hangry, how is potty training going for you guys? I have you left the house without pull ups yet? Or tried nap/bedtime with just underwear? We started potty training 2 weeks ago and it's been going really well. Sometimes we still need need to ask him if he needs to go, especially if he's playing. But it's been pretty obvious when he needs to go because he starts kind of tugging on himself and then he does a little potty dance. We haven't really left the house without the pull ups though. MH took him to the park at the end of the street last week and they were there for about 45 minutes without any accidents. He said he started doing his potty dance so they walked back home and DS went straight for the bathroom and peed. We also haven't tried nap or bedtime without pull ups. The kid sleeps like a rock and I don't know if he'd wake up on his own yet. I suppose that'll come with time though.

So she believes there is a cleft abnormality. It doesn't look like it has formed all the way. They took pics & measurements today and I go back in 2 weeks to see her colleague who specializes in palates.
Best case scenario, we wait & keep an eye on it.
Worst case, he'll need surgery.
The next measurements they take will determine what's next.
She also said this could be contributing to his ear infections.

I know it'll be a long 2 weeks but I'm glad you will at least get to have a plan at that time. I hope it flies by for you and please let us know what we can do to help in the meantime.

I'm so sorry tgrimes, I imagine that was one of the last things you wanted to hear today. I'm going to page sarahwithanh she's on vacation but may be able to offer some resources or info for you when she gets back. IIRC Monty is having his surgery in October.

There's an N13 Mom whose 2nd child had a cleft palate, too. My sister's niece had horrible issues and multiple surgeries so I'm sure she can help me as well.

I'm sorry tgrimes. I hope he doesn't need surgery but it's good that you know and possibly have a reason for all the ear infections.

C has been really gnawing on his pacifier tonight so I felt his gums and there is definitely something coming in finally. I started picturing him with a tooth and immediately teared up. How is he so big?

He dislikes the bath water faucet if it's at full blast! cookswithwine, sorry for the diagnosis, hope he feels better soon! tgrimes, I'm sorry but I'm hoping these 2 weeks will go quickly! Keeping you in my thoughts! You can have all my wine!

jubilantsquirrel so potty training is going well for us. He wears underwear most of the day. He goes to daycare and they have kid size toilets there, so it's easy public practice. Daycare puts him in a pull up for their morning outing and also for naps. He has consistently had one accident a day, usually in the afternoon when he's more distracted. I put him in a pull up for overnights. He's had a couple of dry mornings but I still don't think he's close to being ready for overnight. Other than daycare, we haven't been on too many outings. We walked to soccer and back (1hr15m) without problem. We went to a birthday party at a Y and he peed on the toilet with a portable insert. I bring extra clothes and have wipes in our travel change pad everywhere just in case. I am still very regularly reminding him to go and have caught him a few times about to go poop in his underwear. But whenever I tell him, he always tries on the toilet. So all in, I'm happy with where we're at. I wish I didn't have to cue him to go and I wish he wasn't having any accidents, but I don't think its unreasonable where we are.

That's awesome hangry! We still usually have 1 accident a day too. Today it happened on the side walk while I was out watering the garden. I should probably get one of those portable insert things.

Ehhh, I'm worried. What if this affects his speech, what if he needs surgery, what if he gets 47986547 ear infections, etc. Thanks for asking.

If I had the perfect thing to say that would lift you up and make you feel better I would say it, but my mind inconveniently likes to go blank in these situations.

tgrimes so I'm massively late and you may have gotten reassurances elsewhere, but I wanted to say it's going to be ok. Monty has a minor cleft palate. It looks like an elongated oval and stretches probably 2/3 of the way of his palate. His requires surgery. It's a really minor surgery. The recovery will be awful because he can't have anything in his mouth for 6 weeks, but after that his cleft will be just like everyone elses. He only needs one surgery. It does effect speech and eating. I don't know how a reconstruction would go, but given that it took this long to find I imagine it is minor. Even in complicated cases these surgeries are relatively minor. I know that doesn't get rid of the fears. At the end of the day palate repairs are pretty common and these surgeons do incredible work. I hope the waiting goes quickly. I wish I had more to offer you. It's actually the one issue of Monty's I've never sought out a support group for because the doctors have always treated it so nonchalantly. P.s. always feel free to page me/message me on Facebook as I get that pretty immediately.
