Hello, I'm looking for help naming our baby boy. It's so hard! I tend to like traditional names, but nothing feels right so far. Here's the current list:
Joseph (DH favorite), Joe seems so common/boring though Henry - super popular where we live Scott - the meaning "Scottish person"'is weird, we aren't Scottish William - MIL's favorite :/ Michael - don't love Mike Joshua - DH not a fan John - family name but feels boring
Anything I'm missing? Thanks in advance!

You could always go with an international diminutive as a nickname for Joseph if you like the name but want something more I wouldn't worry about your MIL's favorite if it isn't something that either of you can picture using; it's your child. Also, there are plenty of people named Scott (and Finn) who aren't from those places, so if you both like it I don't think it should hold you back. Adam Alexander Andrew Anthony Arthur Benjamin Caleb Cecil Charles Daniel Elias/Eli Ethan Felix Frederick George Gregory Isaac Jacob James Joel Leo/Leon Levi Lucas Nathaniel/Nathan Oscar Patrick Philip Samuel Sebastian Seth Tobias Victor Vincent Zachary

Joseph -- keep Henry -- keep Scott -- toss William -- toss Michael -- toss Joshua -- toss John -- keep
Would you consider using Henry with the nickname Hank? There is something kind of quirky and kitschy about that nickname to me.
Suggestions: Garrett Jonathan Paul Thomas

I'm not personally a fan of Joseph. Scott is a really awesome name, imo, and I wouldn't think twice about whether the person in question was actually Scottish. Others: Arthur Alexander Christopher Edward Edmund Elliot Ezra Graeme Gabriel Harlan Harold Jonathan Lawrence Leo Milo Mark Peter Piers (pronounced a little different from Pierce. The final sound in Piers is closer to a z) Raphael Sebastian Thayer Willem (much better than William)

Richard Louis Charles Nathaniel Samuel Matthew Mark Phillip Thomas
FWIW I like Joseph. Joey is a cute nickname. Or you can just use Joseph. You aren't required to use a nn.

It tends to get the most negative reaction, bit probably just because it's not top 100 like the others.

I love Charles but Charlie is the current hot neighborhood name for girls. It's funny - I've never known a Joseph, only Joes and Joey. To me Michael is normal on its own, but Joseph sounds so formal or something. Thanks!

You don't have to use a nickname if you don't want to, even if the name has a common nickname. It doesn't keep your kid from choosing to use a nickname in the future, but you don't have to use it from the beginning.
Joseph is a nice name and I know a mix of men who go by a nn and the formal name. Same for Michael. All your names are nice, but if one of you doesn't like a name, I'd table it and look for ones that you both like. And it's ok if no name has a "This is the perfect name" moment.
Other suggestions: Adam Phillip Roger Andrew Jason Samuel Harold Gavin Damien David Darren Brian Jacob Kevin Jarod
