Oh I missed that Pelosi came out in favor of returning the SALT deduction. That will be tricky bc it mostly benefits wealthy homeowners. I don’t know details, but is it because in CA it benefits regular homeowners as well since our taxes are so damn high? Same in NY. We wipe out the deduction solely through state income tax. I don’t get to deduct anything related to property/school taxes, and we have median income/property price

My parents pay more than twice what I do in SALT for a house worth about 1/3 of my house in a rural, MCOL area.

Jen is up with Secretary Granholm I wondered what that noise was in my county - a collective head explosion since we have Biden, Harris, Whitmer and Granholm all in positions of power now.

I don’t know details, but is it because in CA it benefits regular homeowners as well since our taxes are so damn high? This would be popular in many parts of Illinois. I pay over $3,000 for a modest condo. Hitting $10,000 here for a ‘regular’ house is very easy. ETA - the bulk of our SALT taxes go to support schools. Not disputing there may well be better ways to fund schools, but it's what we (and a lot of states) have now, and the SALT actually helped support passage of school referendums, etc.

All I know is Trump took away the SALT deduction to punish 'rich' blue states. Returning SALT would be very popular in those states, which we must carry in the future. I believe I'll be contacting my Democratic congressman and senators to support any such move.
ETA - I'm 99.9% sure they've all supported returning SALT all along, so they don't need my help.

Ugh, yeah, IDT we discussed that but the Arkansas legislature overrode the governor's veto on the anti trans bill This just infuriates me the more and more I think about it. Insurance companies can suck it. My pride flags are hanging high today. Also fuck Republicans and their "small goverment" except for woman and gay rights.

I hate to be a downer, but in addition to the children that have been separated and not reunited that we “know” of, I have grave concerns about adoptions that took place and are now finalized. Knowing that Bethany Christian Services, an organization that has known to have issues in regards to ethics in adoptions, was contracted with the federal government during this time to provide foster care services for unaccompanied minors makes me uneasy. I read stories early on about quick termination of parental rights in states that allow for that and finalized adoptions. I think a full scale review of any child born in an impacted country and adopted in the US during that timeframe should be done. But it won’t be easy. Many states completely wipe out all prior records after an adoption so the birth certificate would read that they were born here to their adoptive parents. There will be a reckoning on this I’m sure of it. My only question is what the scale is. Are we talking a small number (1 is too many in my eyes) or a big number of children. Sorry jaygee, I was thinking about this last night and wanted to come back to it. I wonder how things are going to look in 15+ years with the continued use of programs like 23&me and Ancestry DNA. At some point, there's going to be a group of young adults who are going to question their adoptions/ want to look for their birth parents. It's not going to be hard to research what was going on in our country at the border between 2016 and 2020, and knowing there are an unknown amount of children who were ripped from their parents' arms who never saw them again. I would not be surprised to see a group of these people sue the federal government for separating these children and adopting them out/ "losing them" in the system.

I have been dealing with a crisis of conscience and knew y’all would understand and probably have advice lol
I have been doing some consulting work for a friends company. We are working at the state level to create Covid testing solutions for k-12 schools. They got millions in funding and now want testing in schools and have no idea where to begin. We do everything from the tech, to provide the tests, to staffing, to communication, etc. I believe in what we are doing, it will save lives. It will hopefully give public school teachers confidence in being in the classroom. It will provide testing to underserved students. It will help keep kids IN the classroom.
But. By chance (technically by geography) I’m working in all Republican states. Meeting with governor’s policy advisors, state superintendents, lobbyists, etc. All hardcore Republicans. Flew to a state this week for meetings and just the outright bashing of Dems and Biden and policies was killing me. I can’t speak up. I can’t ruin these relationships because the business would fall through, and again, I strongly believe this testing will save lives. But omg. The hatred some of these people have is just......unreal.
I went through and scrubbed my social media. Changed a ton of my privacy settings (most of my political posts are public as I’m constantly asked if people can share). Changed a ton of posts to “only me”.
I feel like a fraud. I’ve been an out and proud bleeding heart liberal forever. And I feel like I’m doing the blue wave movement disservice. Lol
So. Advice? Am I part of the problem by not speaking up? Or would you just keep your head down in case the return is worth it?😞
*Forgive me if this is jumbled. I’ve been working nonstop and I’m exhausted. Went from not working at all to this. It’s been an .....interesting transition 😂

Rebel, That project sounds amazing and that is so cool that you are involved. High fives!! I think you are being smart to avoid making yourself a target by CYA. It doesn't sound like these people are willing or open to that non-R messaging. I think if you felt comfortable doing so, you could try to push for a more neutral work environment- because I am not sure how bashing politicians is helping you solve any of these work problems and it sounds like a hostile place to be. I think it's ok if you pick and choose the time and place to speak up. It sounds like right now is not it. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

Hugs, Rebel, that sounds like a difficult situation. I'm sure there will be different opinions on this, but I personally would say that if you can push through testing to keep people safe by keeping your mouth shut, and if you open your mouth you might ruin it and there's a possibility they'll decide not to test, then I would keep my mouth shut. However, I wonder if you could work out a few "prepared" remarks - nothing major, just a couple of sentences that you could throw in here and there when particularly vicious statements are made that wouldn't turn them against you but might get them to at least tone it down? Something like, "I'm just glad we're making progress on vaccinations and testing so we can hopefully get back to normal soon!" I mean, it might set off a whole new diatribe, but you've made a statement without being like, "THE CHEETOH FRAUD SUCKS!!!" But, I mean, if you go with the Cheetoh fraud scream and peace out of the talks, please let us know. Maybe film it.

Rebel, oooh I get this. When I worked in credit cards, everyone was a goddamn republican. I had to keep my lips zipped up tight for a long time, which was so incredibly frustrating. My normal response when they started going was "I don't talk politics, religion or personal info at work". One of the guys I knew back them recently tried to add me on IG, which has all of my dem posts, and he quickly saw his way to the unfollow button 😂 He thinks that MA dems drive over to NH to double vote, so it's definitely not a loss. Byeeee.

The remarks that crimsonandclover suggested are what I basically meant when I said push for a more neutral space- try to bring things back to what you are actually working on. Practicing them is smart.

I agree with everyone's thoughts on approach, and also think that if you keep yourself focused on the positive impact of what you're working on accomplishing, it might make it easier to swallow your thoughts on their rants. I don't think scrubing social or not commenting on their bullshit makes you inauthentic, it just means you know your audience. It's just not the space where you'll be able to change the thought process.
