Let's start with how there's potential for an inland, toxic tsunami in FL: www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-56629013Of note, they are desperately pumping this toxic wastewater into Tampa Bay. This wastewater is known to exacerbate the red tides that Florida has been dealing with for years. It's an absolute ecological nightmare. More info: www.cbsnews.com/news/florida-state-of-emergency-wastewater-leak/Note: I originally called the wastewater radioactive but looks like that is in dispute. CNN is still reporting it. BBC says that's a misunderstanding.

starbuck, I've seen it referred to as toxic. Seems like a vague yet terrifying descriptor. Paging Erin Brockovich.

Holy shit, this quote: "For every ton of phosphoric acid produced, the fertilizer industry creates 5 tons of radioactive phosphogypsum waste, which is stored in mountainous stacks hundreds of acres wide and hundreds of feet tall." How is that even remotely sustainable. Why is this even a thing?

cakewench You should be pissed. Their ignorance/cognitive dissonance is completely willful at this point and it's infuriating.

But like who the fuck would buy an environmental disaster for millions? And starbuck it looks like they went bankrupt and dissolved the company.

One of my old coworkers lives riiiight on the border of where they need to be evacuated, by a block or so. I guess officials are like, "well, if there is a breach, then a 20 foot wall of radioactive material is going to decimate the community. But you don't need to leave yet!" Meanwhile her 1 year old was just hospitalized for over a week for asthma-like issues (which may or may not be related). She had no clue they were that close to the plant. I feel awful for the people living so close to there

The sad thing is I don't think there's a state in the Union that doesn't have a plethora of ticking environmental time bombs just waiting to happen....and I don't think the challenge is restricted to the United States either.

Very true. We just used and used and didn't bother about tomorrow until tomorrow came.

I guess I have been around oil and gas too long, because I’m not that surprised at the piney point thing. I’ve seen platforms in the gulf literally falling apart passed from company to company. No one wants to do the work to take them down.

Re the radioactive waste- the strategy is basically to wait it out until the half life of the radioactivity gets below a certain point, and then you can more easily dispose of it. They also do this with nuclear radioactive waste. Yuca mountain. *poof There is research to develop containers that can last the 1000 years required- a tall challenge. The government has poured so much money into it to no real end.

While this is an accurate commentary on Western reporting, I try to remind people that maternity benefits in India only cover a tiny percentage of working women in India - and those women tend to be the wealthiest and most educated because the vast majority of working women aren’t in the formal economy there. Also, maternity leave pay is 100% covered by the employer without Government financial assistance. So not only are many women not eligible, many of childbearing age are also discriminated against because no company wants to have to provide a huge portion of their employees a ton of paid leave. There’s also no paternity leave in India - because childcare is largely seen as woman only concern. India is not an easy place to be a poor woman. I can’t speak to Mauritius.
