I am spiraling into an anxious mess today. My mom was over last night for dinner and there are no good updates about my grandpa. They think one of the antibiotics he was on for the spinal meningitis was causing his unresponsiveness so they took him off of it and hes showing SOME improvement -- tracking people when they are in the room, looking like he understands what is happening -- but no communication other than eye movement. Otherwise he's sleeping all day. The doctors said it could take up to 2 weeks for the med to get out of his system fully. But they also don't think he'll improve to his cognition levels before he came in either. So that just really fucking sucks. We don't know for sure, of course, but all signs are pointing toward him not coming out of this.
I'm just... I don't know. I can tell my mom is trying to be strong for her mom. But the updates haven't gotten any better really and I know my grandpa, and while I have no idea what his medical directives say, I'm reasonably certain he won't want to be kept in this kind of state for long if there isn't hope of him fully recovering. If he dies, we are all going to be a mess. Not just because of what he meant to us as a family member but because we can't have a proper funeral, we can't even go say goodbye unless they let him go home, and then it means we were robbed of the last year of his life. I fucking hate this goddamn pandemic. I'm so sick of losing my grandparents and not getting to see them before they go this year.
/end rant

So willow would that fix your problem? No, I have nothing to change in my taxes. And at this point, the IRS has already used my 2019 return to determine whether I get the stimulus, which was the problem in the first place because we changed from MFJ to MFS and so my income drastically changed. Could you make a small IRA contribution? This would likely require a amendment, which is a pain in the ass, but might help?

easier what does your DS think about homeschooling long term? I know you will give it a lot of careful consideration but it is a big decision. I do hope that going forward it may be easier to move in and out of the school system due to all this covid stuff.

willow I’m sorry. That sounds very stressful. I would see how he does as he comes off the medication and hopefully it is better than they are anticipating.

Oh man, that's awful willow. I'm so sorry. I hope when the meds are out of his system, his prognosis is much better. In the meantime, I send some gentle hugs your way. This pandemic really does fucking suck.

I know there is a deferred comp plan too but I don't think I can easily get all that set up to do now.

You could fund it with$250 or so, and then have to amend taxes to reflect the contribution. I have no idea if this will get you that money sooner, but it may be an option. You have until May 15 to make a 2020 contribution. If you are referring to the TSP, that's super easy to set up as well. 5% match as well, huzzah free money!

We have PERA (Public Employees Retirement Association) pensions for our union. I don't know if it will get me the money sooner at this point either. I am also afraid of changing it and then it taking even longer. At this point I feel like I might as well stick it out until I get it. I have seen on the reddit forum I am following that some people who are finally starting to get their refunds are also getting their stimulus payments afterward, so it is possible the IRS is accounting for that as well but just not telling people they are doing it over the phone (I honestly feel like they tell their customer service people nothing).

He’s asked to be homeschooled for awhile now just because he likes being at home. I hope so too. I’d love to stay connected to our school in some way. Ideally they’d continue to offer a virtual option but I feel I’d still want to supplement. He’s been very bored and I want him to enjoy learning.

FYI, willow, it's super easy to set up the deferred comp contributions. Mine got f-ed up when I went on maternity leave and I just realized it when I did taxes this year. The deferred comp rep I talked to send over changes to payroll each week, so it is fast. My sister talked me a little through IRA's too - I guess you can contribute something like 4k for the previous year if you set one up, which also seemed pretty easy, but I don't money so don't quote me. Also, I'm so sorry about your grandpa.

Mainly because I'm not even entertaining the idea of adding more to retirement right now until we are done with 3 kids in child care.

Thank you for the kinds words. I feel like the hits keep coming and I'd like for the rest of 2021 to just knock it the fuck off because haven't we (a collective we) been through enough?

willow Giving you hugs. I don’t know if this will help, but my grandma was placed on hospice partially because it was necessary but also because it allowed for different visitation rules. She outlasted the initial 90 days, which was such a blessing to my family during Covid. I hope today has been better for him.

I opened a Vanguard account for it the first time and have been adding ~$3000 a year ever since - the whole process is extremely easy. willow, I’m so sorry about your grandfather.

fatpony So I actually got a call back from someone in Betty McCollums office today. She spoke with their IRS liaison who assured her that the info I got from the customer rep was wrong and that the IRS will be automatically checking to see if the 2020 returns give people the right to the third stimulus and then issue it. That is a relief to hear. Now if only my refund would finally process. 🙄🙄 Also I was very appreciative that a real person actually called me back and was very kind.

Yes, it’s so nice that they actually took the time to call me back, I wasnt really expecting a response. She said to call her back in a few weeks if I still hadn’t seen my refund too.

Realizing this is area specific, but our public library has all sorts of online resources. There are also various home schooling options with online support. Our public school has a homeschool school, which is open at the start of the year. With the pandemic, they finally expanded to cover all grades. They have various resources and some children thrive in that environment. Again, I understand this may not be commonplace, but it is worth asking about locally.

I should really use our library more. Thanks for the reminder. I don’t think any of our public schools have a homeschool associated with them, but I will ask around. It might be something our school decides to offer too (we go to a charter). They’ve tried to be really responsive and offer parents choices during the pandemic. Unfortunately our principal is leaving unexpectedly so I don’t know how well they’ll be able to plan for next year yet and tell us what to expect. Which is another reason I’m feeling like I’ll just do it myself, ha. The uncertainty is tough. Anyway I’m rambling. Thanks again!

Massholes and other New Englanders - have y’all been watching “This Is A Robbery” on Netflix about the Isabella Stewart Gaaaahdnahhh Museum heist? It’s SO GOOD. I’d only gone there a few times when I lived in Massachusetts. Now I wanna go home and go back through! And I never knew about the heist in Yarmouth, too!
