www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-40624288So they cast Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor! The first woman to take the role. It'll be interesting to see. I'm a little sad Capaldi is leaving though. I feel like he's finally found his stride as the Doctor in Series 10 and now he'll be gone. Thoughts on the new Doctor?

I'm pretty excited about it! Now I have to get caught up on the last season because I've been slacking.

So many butthurt bros are complaining in the comments. I'm not surprised but it's still astonishing to read.

I am THRILLED by this casting. She was brilliant in Broadchurch and she and Chibnall obviously work well together. Time for me to catch up, since I wasn't really into Capaldi so stopped watching a while back.

Just came here to see if this had been posted yet. I'm so excited!!!! I don't really get the upset about it either. This is a character that can be anyone so it makes less sense that it would never be a woman. People are so stupid sometimes.

I'm so excited. Capaldi was just starting to grow on me ... I mainly liked his relationship with Missy lol. Bill was eh, but I'm glad she got a happy-ish ending as far as companion endings go. I think Nardale will stay with the group of people he was helping escape in the last episode so I'm looking forward to a new companion too. The people who are complaining are just obnoxious. Almost every re-generation (in the newer set) has commented, oh I'm not a woman yet? I am a bit sad she's not ginger though

I saw this out take from the season finale in the comments section and it sums it up so perfectly.
DOCTOR: She was my first friend, always so brilliant, from the first day at the Academy. So fast, so funny. She was my man crush. BILL: I'm sorry? DOCTOR: Yeah, I think she was a man back then. I'm fairly sure that I was, too. It was a long time ago, though. BILL: So, the Time Lords, bit flexible on the whole man-woman thing, then, yeah? DOCTOR: We're the most civilized civilization in the universe. We're billions of years beyond your petty human obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes.

I did a happy dance when my husband showed me the video reveal! She is a fantastic actress and I am excited to see what this season brings, although I was really starting to love Capaldi.

I do not watch Dr. Who, my H and I have been meaning to for a long time but it's so daunting and we just can't find a good place to jump in.
I LOVED Jodie Whittaker in Broadchurch. I love that the 13th doctor is a woman. Will we be totally lost if we start watching this season?

CurlieWhirlie , it's hard to say, but typically with a new show runner there won't be too much plot carry over from the last season. It should stand alone as an introduction to the series. But I highly recommend going back when you get a chance! Good places in modern Who to start would be the beginning of Chris Eccleston, beginning of David Tennent or the beginning of Matt Smith. I don't think the beginning of Peter Capaldi is as good of a starting place as the others. I'm partial to Eccleston and Tennent, but lots of people get into it through the Matt Smith seasons. *edited to fix autocorrect
