Rep Grace Meng gave a pretty powerful testimony. She was in tears at the end.

I’m sure everyone has seen this, but I’d like to play this on a megaphone right now.
Also I’m annoyed right now that most news articles about this are behind a paywall. It’s so hard to get info right now. This account is translating from Korean news with more information.

overboard the part in his clip where he says the police humanized HIM more then the victims. This is what's speaking volumes to me. All my love to you and others in or with loved ones in the AAPI community, I can't think of who that is here off the top of my head.

In addition to the hate crimes from this week, I am really hopped up about the passage of the VAWA and how many GQP members voted against it. In my previous job, we were one of 4 (I think) pilot counties around the country to get grants from the VAWA for increased training and support of our domestic violence cases in the courts. I received extensive training on domestic violence and our policies for orders for protection and such were much stronger because of it. As a victim of domestic abuse myself and working in the courts system in family law, I have seen the benefit of the money that this act has given on a smaller scale. It's absolutely abhorrent that so many people voted against it.

Looks like Biden has chosen a NASA administrator. Also I completely missed the word former in this headline and had an actual heart attack.

This is a security clearance thing since it’s still federally illegal. And it’s not specific to the WH. Anyone handling sensitive or classified material knows marijuana use - past or present - can be a problem. I’m not a federal employee anymore but I still hold a clearance and can still lose my job over marijuana use, even if using it in a legal state. Literally everyone knows it’s dumb, including the background investigators and adjudicators, but it’s the rules until congress/federal government addresses it.

We need federal legislation about this. It’s ridiculous that marijuana use precludes people from serving in the federal government. And feds and contractors working in secure positions should be able to use medical marijuana if needed without worry.

Yup - it’s really going to come to a head and be a problem Congress needs to pick up. I know agencies have *some* flexibility in how they treat past use (e.g. to not care if it’s been 2+ years), but current/recent use is going to cross the line - a real problem for young future employees. It’s an illegal drug still. I went to grad school in CO to a feeder program for the federal government, think tanks, etc., and the school was constantly reminding us that though legal in state using it could screw up our career prospects because so many people were like “hey it’s legal here, I’ll try it.” And marijuana use is even more “normalized” now - the government will lose qualified candidates for sure.

Someone from my area just got arrested for 1/6 stuff including assault on a officer. He’s ex-special forces. It sounds like someone who served with him identified and turned him in.

The marijuana use thing is a big problem, and should really be fixed with so many states legalizing it. It is unfortunate. Would they disqualify the same person if they had been in rehab for alcohol addiction? No. (I know, it's federally legal but still. Alcohol is so much more of a problem)

I mean the article isn’t great but the whole issue seems pretty conflicting. Why only some staff for past use? Maybe there’s a different issue at play here but why pin it on past use? To say only staff in those specific positions aren’t allowed to have used in the past, kinda seems disingenuous when the VP herself has said she’s used in the past? There’s OPM guidance that instructs agencies to look at usage on a case-by-case basis. Typically, you have to be able to demonstrate/claim it’s all in the past/you’re “rehabilitated.” The same goes with documented alcohol abuse, actually - if you can demonstrate rehabilitation/sobriety for a decent amount of time, it’s not an automatic disqualification. And they’re supposed to be looking at you in the aggregate - so if you were an occasional smoker in college but otherwise squeaky clean, your case will be different from someone who smoked and had a bunch of traffic tickets or a misdemeanor somewhere. Also, depending on your level of clearance, they’ll treat it differently. If you just need a run of the mill secret clearance, they’ll probably not care if you were a recreational/occasional smoker a year or two ago. If you need a TS/SCI with a full scope poly, they’re going to drill down into it more. The beef here should be with Congress, not with the executive agencies following the law as it exists now. The rules are dumb. Oh and yes, the president, VP, and congressional intel committee members “automatically” get their clearances by virtue of elected office.

Also, the White House has a separate security review and clearance office from OPM.
Alyssa Mastromonaco (Obama DWHCOS) was a total stoner in college so they gave her the clearance but she had to agree to random drug testing.
And don't even get me started on fucking Jared.

Those of us who waited months/years for clearances to come through are always bitter about the people who get theirs nicely expedited because they’re connected. My initial clearance took forever thanks to a bazillion foreign relatives/contacts, but sure sure Jared didn’t know any sketchy foreigners - wave him on through. ETA that each agency’s security ultimately makes their own calls too. I’ve known people who couldn’t get a DOD clearance but got one elsewhere. It’s a hot mess system - but the marijuana issue is firmly a legislative issue right now.
