I agree. I’ve been seeing some of his old senate videos on tiktok. And I find I am appreciating him a bit more. He’s got his issues but he’s been consistent and while there’s negative stuff about him. I can see the good too. I would be here if it weren't for his behavior in 2016. I am not and will not move past it. I think that’s okay. I get it. He’s got a lot of qualities I loathe. Most politicians on the left have that. They have that thing they did that it’s terrible but we sort of just move it along sometimes. I get it. I mean Obama called BLM protestors thugs once upon a time. I consider that very problematic.plus all the deportations that happened during his presidency. It affected my family a lot. I have complicated feels about him in general. But I still like and respect him. I try to keep seeing the good he’s done. One thing I will say, is both the left and rignt are guilty of putting politicians on pedestals and that ends up bad most of the time.

Ceasers are way tastier than Bloody Mary's. I actually prefer most beer with a splash of clamato. (UO?)

National crises really make or break a presidency. Bush had 9/11 and Katrina.
I believe if not for Covid, Trump would have been re-elected.
I'm trying to think of Obama, we had the housing market and recession but that may have still been under Bush too in 2008.
Woof, Bush.

I feel like this this part of the problem. Instead of learning from the past, we romanticize it. Like, the kids in the 90s looked at the hippie years as peace and love and ignored that glaring problems of the era. Rose colored glasses nostalgia. Yeah I never thought peace and love.
I mean it wasn't peace and love, but there was that 60s revival with clothes and the second british invasion and huge Earth Day celebrations and hemp necklaces and all this whitewashed nostalgia. Totally superficial.

I always thought Bloody Mary's were something old white women drank cause they felt it was healthy. I only know of young white people drinking them as the more dudely version of a morning cocktail. In Nola, when we were still awake at 6 am from the night before, we would go to Igor's for bloodies and watch the sunrise. I do not know any older people that drink them, but I also don't know a ton of older people drinking morning cocktails anyway, so I'm not ruling it out. In all my life in NOLA, I knew no one that drank them but old white women. Even when I had decided my career path was bartending. I have never even seen one live. All on TV.
I know a ton of older people who drink no matter the time of day if they so choose to.

Health rarely factors into our decision making. Again this was younger McBenny and younger me felt there would be no other reason to drink tomato juice ever in life.

I also don't feel Katrina broke anything for Bush. I feel like with most hurricanes the country doesn't care. Maybe while it's on TV but if there is no coverage then most people go on with their lives and so I don't think Katrina hurt him politically in the eye's of the nation.
He already was on his 2nd term when Katrina happened as well.
I feel it was the lying about the weapons of mass destruction but that's JMO. I know I could be incorrect.

I wasn't even of voting age for Obama's first term so I'm sure there's plenty I missed with Bush. And like people said upthread, is probably what's contributing to his dopey perception.

The prior administration often has things in place that come to roost with the next president.
Like the recession that occurred was in the making when Bush was in office. The Obama phones that some white people loved to critiqued was a program put in place by Bush as well.
The boom in the economy in the beginning of the Trump administration was the work put in and programs put in during Obama's terms.
But most regular Joes don't know or don't want to know this.

One thing I will say, is both the left and rignt are guilty of putting politicians on pedestals and that ends up bad most of the time. See, that's kind of my frustration with him though. He does that. And his followers - which IDC what people say, he has a hand in their rhetoric same as Trump has with his horde - are absurd in their absolute demand for perfection. They venerated AOC only to turn on her on a dime bc she stated a willingness to work with Biden. It's gross and there is a lot of misogyny/racism blatantly clear in it. I know, we don't need to argue about Bernie. But if we're talking about the infantilizing of Bush, I see it with Sanders as well. Because he's grumpy and rumpled, we overlook at lot of really deep issues in his talk and frankly lack of real action. I personally have zero expectations of perfection, and that is exactly where I find him infuriating. He's never let real progress stand in the way of his idealized vision.

I do hate the George W and Michelle Obama memes about them being BFFs. Like I hate him. It's also snapshots of moments in time. That doesn't mean they are braiding each other's hair and shit. I hate how Trump’s presidency has somehow made W endearing or whatever. No. He’s a war criminal and responsible for the Katrina aftermath. Thank you for saying this!

I saw a meme, to stay on topic, of Hannity with the doctored headline "Biden president for one day and 400,000 dead" and I think that pretty much sums up this phenomena.

Oh, each new president is left problems by their predecessor that they take the blame for.
Obama inherited a financial crisis. But, that was years in the making, syatrting with the loosening of lending restriction under Clinton and the further deregulation of lending institutions under Bush. Obama got handed that mess and a lot of the blame. Politics is dirty business.

I mean if we are holding everyone accountable we would have never had 4 5.
We wouldn't have 4 6 either.
We wouldn't have the VP we have now.
I mean rare is the person that is fully clean.
Everyone is learning and growing or so you hope.
There are things that have happened here on this forum and things that have been said and we learn and we grow or you don't. You deal with the person or you choose not to.
