I went to the OB today and everything was great. On my ride home, my dr called me and said she forgot to give me the paperwork for a fetal echocardiogram. I asked why I needed one and she said because I'm over 35. Did anyone else have one just because of age? I wasn't prepared to question my doctor while driving on the highway. I have a phone appointment with my maternity nurse from my insurance company tomorrow so I'm going to talk to her about it.

I had one because I was a high risk due to diabetes. It was annoying because it takes like an hour, but I liked the peace of mind.

I work in a peds cardiology clinic that houses a fetal diagnostics clinic that does all the fetal echos for the hospital. From my experience it's not typical for a fetal echo to be ordered just because a patient is over 35. I've only seen patients get one if something abnormal is detected or due to some preexisting condition like Wedding's diabetes or a patient who has a family history of congenital heart defects. If you do need one, it's just like an ultrasound so very easy

Lots of needing to roll around and probing. Depends on how compliant the baby is. They need to view all chambers of the heart and do measurements so it takes a bit.

I was AMA with both pregnancies and I don't remember having this. However I can say that there were tons of changes in the 2.5 years between pregnancies, and I had a ton more tests, esp towards the end.
I just asked a ton of questions, and as long as everything was uninvasive I just went with it.

However, now reading wedding's post, I think I did have this. I remember an in depth ultrasound where we spent a lot of time on the heart. It was done at the perinatal place that I had all the other stuff (anatomy scan, etc) done Obviously it was no big deal since I already forgot about it.

Thanks girls. The maternity nurse was good for nothing. She asked where I was having it done and I said I wasn't sure but probably the same place I had my NT scan done. She didn't know what an NT scan was. I wanted to know if insurance would cover it and she couldn't answer that either.
