And that's not even touching their practice of "baptizing" people after they died. Like decades or centuries after they died. It's offensive and disrespectful. All because of their "I'm right and the rest of you are going to hell" viewpoint.
As someone who's agnostic, leaning atheist, I would be absolutely pissed if someone tried to "baptize" me after I died.

It was very navel-gazing. Like, oh look at us, we're souch better than the other Christians. Like, he spent paragraph upon paragraph on the virtues of the church, and basically glossed over racial, gender, and LGBTQ issues. I got pissed off when I read "only 8% of Mormon women want ordination for women", like that's a reason to now allow. If you're preventing even just one woman who wants to be ordained, you're doing something wrong. It's ridiculous. I also will never understand how anyone believes the whole "prophets get spoken to by God" thing. Literally, does not compute in my brain. I have very serious problems with the church. Having been told in kindergarten by my teacher that I couldn't be a very nice little girl because I didnt go to primary as i was the ONLY non lds kid in the school at the time, the problems you mentioned and the fact that while public facing they are 'nice' yet slam everyone behind closed doors 'our lawns look so much better than the catholics'. The fact that when my ex & I were still together, he received an invitation inviting him to a singles mixer, while i was caring for his child and he was living in my house, sending female missionaries to my house to talk to him, random home teachers knocking on my door. (those are actual quotes/personal experiences and not disparaging anyone who may be LDS here).
I will say they DO have the most charitable system of anything I've seen; housing/food/employment are given readily if needed. I just wish the bishop who is in charge of the ward in my area would quit mailing shit to my ex at my house. But HRC and PP really appreciate the donations every time he does. My only problem with their charity is the strings attached. They're so manipulative about it. I have a lot of issues with Mormonism, if you haven't guessed yet lol.

jkjacq, I have a lot of mixed feelings as well. My grandparents, briefly my sister, and one side of my family are LDS (converted after my mom was an adult) and they are truly very giving and generous people (same grandma that broke her ankle- they will be giving her and my grandpa a lot of support when she comes home), so I have brushed up against it throughout my life. My current supervisor is also high up in our local LDS chapter (and I think low key has been trying to recruit my family). And not that I necessarily believe in afterlife or heaven (or god), but knowing they are cool with a lot of the family not being with them when they believe they will get there has always seemed incredibly hypocritical to me. I try not to think about it too much or my head explodes.

jkjacq I’m sorry if I brought up bad memories. I really despise this kind of stuff. There’s good in JW religion too, but it doesn’t begin to balance out the harm they’ve done.

Oh they’re not bad memories. I’ve literally been around the church since I was 5. I just laugh at the hypocrisy I see daily. But there are good people in the church who take what they need from it and do their own thing just like everyone else.

What’s so interesting to me about LDS is how few Americans actually are Mormon compared to other religions here. I think it’s like 2-3 million. It always seems like there are way more but maybe that’s because there is such a presence in western states.
I was chuckling a little at how the journalist glossed over the negatives of Utah and its culture. It feels very on brand to essentially smile and neglect to talk about areas Utah fails when discussing it as a utopia.

hawkeye2015, WaPo is saying that it's about disagreements in covid relief... not to say this isn't buried deep in the language, but they aren't reporting it as the hold up. They also say it's almost certain we'll go into a shutdown at this point.

Ugh...time to deactivate FB again. 🙄🙄🙄 I can't stand the people who talk out of both sides of their fucking mouth when it comes to covid and the vaccine. "Keep everything open! Low percent die!" But "don't get the vaccine! Side effects!". Pick a lane. And this is also coming from a travel agent who frequently goes to underdeveloped countries with people. I asked if she discourages prophylaxis and inoculation for travel, too. She said I was "trying to pick a fight". 🙄 Nope...pointing out how privileged it is to shit on scientists and healthcare providers who are doing their best. "Please stay home to stop the spread!" "No!!" "Ok well then please wear a small piece of cloth over part of your face." "WON'T!!" "Ok then please take this vaccine that will protect you" "Fuck off!" Make any of it make sense. I get that people don't want to stay home for a year, or can't. But like ....help us help you, right? she also said she's speaking out against the vaccine for immunocompromised people or those who have reacted negatively and shouldn't have it....so I said and that's exactly why those who can, should! So those who are told should "stay home, not everyone else!" CAN get back out there. Make it make sense!

They must think this will be very short term or will avoid a shutdown last minute. Perhaps another CR?

Huh. I actually found that LDS article pretty interesting. We have a pretty huge LDS community in my city though and while I have complicated feelings about most of it, I also agree with the immense generosity that jkjacq brought up. And I haven't found strings attached in their generosity when related to my work at least.

I grew up in an area where there was a high percentage of LDS kids (many of them were v. active in the theater program with me), and the norms seemed to be super different than the side of MH's family that is LDS. I wonder if part of it has to do with local leadership too? I don't know. The generosity part struck me at the time too.

I think there is an assumption that Congress will come up with a budget by Sunday.
But this is 2020 so 🤷♀️

I can't believe that nearly a year into the pandemic, when businesses keep closing and unemployment is running out, they are talking about even less stimulus and half the unemployment supplement as before. Do they not understand that so, so many households have been stretched to the breaking point?
Assuming it even comes thru.

And I haven't found strings attached in their generosity when related to my work at least. the generosity with no strings attached has been very evident in covid. someone sick, quarantined, dies, they show up with food train, feed you for a month or whatever. pull stuff from the bishops warehouse, and never mention the church, maybe ask if you want a grief counselor from the church to call you. If there's ever a zombie apocalypse, you should know where the closest bishops warehouse is. I'm just saying.

Well, if people had saved better instead of buying iPhones and avocado toast then they wouldn't have to worry about being unemployed for 12 months. /sarc
