Okay, I think that was the piece I was missing. The house votes on a waiver. But Duckworth is former military so I typically respect her opinion on these types of subjects. I’m curious what the argument is against a waiver. It seems arbitrary to me, but I also know about as much about the military as I do about farming. SoD is supposed to be a civilian position and my guess is to stave off any inter-military coup attempts. The waiver has only been employed twice before, once with Mattis, so the wariness is still fresh from that. The Atlantic has a handful of pieces that are pro and con having Austin serve. All of them are quite complimentary of him as a general and person, but the con pieces are about the blurring the lines of civilian positions. This is very helpful! Thank you.

Both the House and Senate vote on the waiver I believe. So, while she won't vote yes to the waiver, she would confirm him when the waiver passes But how could it pass the senate without her? I can’t imagine Senate republicans are going to pave the way for a Biden nominee. I think just because it normally passes just fine. Looks like with Mattis is wasn't even close.

Virginia contingent, are we talking about Terry McAuliffe? Idk how I’m supposed to feel about this Virginia has never had a female governor. I think it's about damn time that the men sat the fuck down and let a woman try. Especially a WOC. (PDQ this next part) MH is torn though. He's been a big fan of McAuliffe ever since he got felons their rights back. We had looked into getting a lawyer to start the process to get MH's rights back, but it was a lengthy, confusing, and expensive process. Without McAuliffe, he wouldn't have been able to vote in the 2016 presidential election.

My tinfoil hat brain thinks that this is to be a lightning rod and attract criticism so that his other picks can get confirmed. Idk. Maybe I am nuts to think this.

My understanding is that there isn’t really a “normally” though. It’s only happened a couple times in history.

Oh god. This is all we’re going to talk about for 6 months, isn’t it. HE.DOESNT.HOLD.AN.OFFICE.
HE.IS.NOT.ELECTED. Shit his daddy isnt even giving him an advisory job.
HIS TAXES HAVE NO BEARING ON ANYTHING unlike the trump children
FFS
^me screaming at Tapper earlier
I will slightly disagree with you here. I think it’s fair to point out that his father will control the agency investigating him and that everything needs to be above board. That feels appropriate to me. I know the Republicans will take it so far beyond appropriate, though.

It’s a joke that Carmel, IN (which is in Hamilton Co) is Eagleton. It’s well-earned teasing though, because there are an alarming amount of similarities. There’s even a Twitter account called Carmel is Eagleton.

It seems arbitrary to me, but I also know about as much about the military as I do about farming. I am conflicted on the waiver situation. 1. My biggest concern during the Obama administration was military accountability and failing to ensure civilian oversight over the military through the SecDef appointment is squicky. 2. The General has been retired for 4 years and I'm pretty sure there's nothing magical that happens during the 364th day of your 6th year of retirement, do the 7 year rule does seem arbitrary. 3. But I hate for us to get into a pattern of, "Fuck the rules! Also the other guys did it first!" 4. While there's institutional memory and career leadership at the Pentagon that I trust, Trump and Kash Patel cleaned house in some important areas and lordy, what a mess. There's merit to sending someone in there who can dive right in. That doesn't mean there aren't qualified civilians or service members who've been retired for 7+ years, but they're all going to be defense contractors or consultants.

This place is still pretty horrible. It was pretty much just a rejection of Trump. And I would like the record to state that I don’t live in Eagelton. It’s pretty close and might as well be, though. 🥴

I wanted her for Ag Secretary because I think she would've been amazing for food security issues. I'm a little harrumph about it going to a dude from IA because it doesn't seem like any kind of pivot. At least it wasn't Collin Peterson I guess. So, I am going to just defend Vilsack for a minute here. As much as I liked some other options there are a few pretty important facts to keep in mind about the "dude from IA" 1) He is heavily disliked by factory farms, which is actually a good thing 2) He and his staff were integral to the enactment of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, which was a really important piece of legislation 3) Joni Ernst does not support him (although Grassley does) 4) He has 8 years of experience in this position. And I think this is really key right now. There are A LOT of areas that need vast improvement right away and need fresh leadership to make it happen. That means there needs to be areas that can run smoothly, basically on their own, from day one. I see USDA as one of these areas. His experience will allow for this. I don't know that there needs to be a large pivot at USDA. I need to specify that these are my own opinions and do not represent the views of my employer. Lol. I don't know that everyone at my organization nor the folks we represent agree with me, as most of them have different political leanings. I respect your position but I disagree. To me, this is one that needs an advocate for a more progressive focus on food security for millions of low-income people, racial equity in farming subsidies - especially black farmers, a focus on immigrant farmworkers, as well as climate change. This is one of the areas where I'm not content with just getting back to where we were pre-Trump. The dude from IA comment was snarky but it was shorthand for the above. Not saying he's not thoroughly competent but he's pretty uninspired. I'm sure we all have our areas where we were hoping for more and got meh. This is it for me.

Ugh. This is very upsetting. I really need there to be an intervention. This is going to get bad and her term doesn’t end for two more years. I’m upset with myself for voting for her but I really did feel like if she ran she knew what she was doing. I did it more for respect. But, yeah, I’m going to learn a lesson on this one.

I feel you jaygee. Why oh why don’t these aging senators want to go off and enjoy retirement? There are others perfectly able and qualified for the job. It just doesn’t make sense. I’m hoping she will step down gracefully. I think it is completely respectful to say after decades of public service... it’s time for some personal enjoyment and rest.
