This seems like a terrible idea. Oh no. No no no. Personally my favorite for the position is Sally Yates, but Merrick Garland would be fun too. lol Merrick Garland as AG is fun, but I can't imagine he'd leave a lifetime appointment on the DC Circuit. Of those mentioned, Sally Yates would be my pick, too.

FFFC my teenager is the one who told me SCOTUS ruled on Texas. He came running into the room all excited. I had been refreshing all afternoon and apparently he'd been tracking it too and beat me to it. That’s not flameful, that’s a testament to raising a well-informed kid! 👏🏻

Have y’all discussed the new LA AG George Gascon?
This man will single handedly save lives. And hopefully change the criminal justice system in CA forever, and maybe eventually the US.
There are like 20 tweets. Summary: end of cash bail, end of trying children as adults, end of death penalty, end of 3 strike rule, end of sentence enhancements, end of criminalizing homeless and mental health.

I hope he gets a fair shot and that people give these policies a chance so that good can be done. People are going to complain about low level property crimes going unpunished with no thought to why filling jails with petty offenders is terrible for society overall. Gascon was previously SF's DA. His legacy there is mixed, probably because he was unpopular with the police unions and they blamed him for all of the city's problems. We need people to buy into the truth that a person's life is more important than one's material possessions, but I'm not sure we're there yet.

My partner and I were (drunkenly) discussing this tonight. We think it's amazing what he's doing. It's weird that everyone's talking about it tonight, when he released his twitter statement on Monday. Anyway, I'm Canadian, and he's making social media waves here. Maybe my wine coloured glasses are on, but I think Gascón is going to effect actual change.

His legacy there is mixed, probably because he was unpopular with the police unions and they blamed him for all of the city's problems. We need people to buy into the truth that a person's life is more important than one's material possessions, but I'm not sure we're there yet. This is a good article about his tenure in SF. I will say he indeed has a mixed record here. There is criticism on both sides. On the progressive/liberal side his failure to bring charges in several police shootings is probably the biggest. He’s already reopening cases in LA so I hope he learned from those mistakes in SF. On the property crime situation - it did get out of hand in SF and create a quality of life issue for people. I hope again he can learn from missteps and figure out a way to have an effective department that also has perspective on punishment for crimes. I think their needs to be a balance on investigating and trying to reduce low level crime without prosecuting people to the hilt and ruining lives over it. But that takes a lot of money and effort to investigate and rehabilitate. The area I felt Gascon was very successful in was using technology and systems to enact change. For example, when CA legalized marijuana many jurisdictions carried that forward only or maybe went back a couple years to wipe records. SF engaged a data firm to go back all the way to the 70s to wipe records proactively. It became the model for many other cities in CA and it was truly life changing for people. He does seem to be an ally of the Governor (that’s who appointed him to SF DA after Ms Harris won election to CA DA) so that could be a good sign. He seems to have not gotten along with Mayor Breed in SF. Idk. I think I’ve always felt mixed about him along with a lot of SF Bay Area folks. I’m glad to see him coming out strong and will be watching closely. www.google.com/amp/s/www.sfchronicle.com/crime/amp/Gasc-n-made-enemies-as-SF-s-reformer-district-14545705.php

The myth that we just have to be moderate enough, be quiet enough, be whatever enough to get conservatives to like us and then everything will be perfect is just that: a myth. They're just not that into us. We need to realize that and instead work for the people who have been keeping the democratic party alive for years: people of color. When do they get to be considered in the conversation? I'll get off my soap box now lol We also have to axe gerrymandering so Republicans aren't more afraid of a primary from the right than they are of a challenge from the left. There are like, two moderate Republicans.

This is one of the funnier parts of their denial. And they could say that we rely on them for food, but the PNW are two of the largest ten farming states in the union and I believe CA is in there as well. We'll be fine THANKS. I do hate it for all the red state progressives and marginalized communities that even have to put up with this bullshit talking point though. I mean, we got IL sitting blue in the middle of a lot of red. That would be awkward. I dislike the thought too. Seccession should not be floated around ever. athn64, I do think every now and again talk comes up about splitting Illinois in two, and every so often in suburban Cook County there's chatter about separating from Chicago into its own county. Honestly, sometimes I see it the 'why' behind the talk, even if it's usually to point out that downstate or suburban interests and concerns often do seem drowned out due to large metropolitan influence. That said, it would be nothing but foolhardy to actually contemplate secession IMO. I do worry in my Chicago collar county that after decades of turning purple, we may be turning red again. The down ticket races were just too close for my comfort, even when Democrats won, and I really do worry about the silo effect. I think the midterms will be a huge challenge, over and above all the crises we're already dealing with.

And people here aren't happy with Pritzker's mitigations. I'm worried for midterms too. Who knows how the governors race will go then.

Omfg to that entire thing. Kiddo is almost the least problematic part of it. WSJ has been terrible since Murdoch bought it but they've really leaned in on the shit posting the past year or so.
