We closed on our house last week! And stayed the night there, camped out on air mattresses with the dog. Walked around the new neighborhood, met some kids and dads and dogs at the playground, checked out the woods/dock/kayak launch (which is AMAZING omg). However, the house was filthy. Like absolutely disgusting, so I spent most of the time there making it acceptable for my kids to run around and use the toilet. The bathrooms were... ugh. It didn't seem dirty when we toured it and during the inspection but my goodness. I feel like it should be standard to have your house cleaned by either you or a professional once you sell it. For the money you spend on a house, I feel like expecting it to be clean is not unreasonable? I am having ours cleaned after we move out because I feel like it is a courteous thing to do. We are going to go back for New Year's weekend and take a load of stuff and check out the painting progress, I think they are going to start painting next week and I am level 11 excited about the transformation that is about to occcur there. I can creep on the painters and watch the progress through my wifi cameras that I installed When we sold our house, our realtor was very clear that it only had to be “broom-swept” according to the contract. She said it’s expected that the buyers will have cleaners come through or clean it well themselves before moving in. I would think buyers probably would clean it themselves, yes, but like - why should someone else have to clean up pee from all over the toilets and floors? And nasty, spilled gunk at the bottom of the fridge? I would be mortified if I left my house in that condition. Plus all the dust and dirt and whatever else. It was just nasty. You buy a used car and it comes clean, right? It just blows my mind.

I warned them that it was a big job. I had decided to just clean it myself but once I got there and saw the condition, there was just no way.

Our past 2 houses have been professionally cleaned prior to move in. And when we sold our last house, the buyers wrote in the agreement that it would be professionally cleaned and we would provide a receipt. So maybe keep that idea in your pocket for next time. Yes, it’s the right thing to do. But lost people are assholes. And gross.

I’ve never bought a house, but have always paid to have cleaners come when we leave rentals. Have only once moved into a filthy rental house

Yes I very much remember the “broom swept” thing when we bought and sold our houses. Which I feel is not nearly enough. I’ve always thoroughly, over the top cleaned every place we’ve ever moved out of and hired cleaners in between tenants when we owned a rental.
I remember finding mouse turds in the cabinets in our current house when we moved in and having a freak out about an infestation. Nope. I’ve never seen further evidence of mice in the kitchen so it must have been from years ago and they just never used those certain cabinets. They never used the oven either. It was a five year old unit when we bought the house and I remember being astounded at how clean they kept the oven. Then, the first few times I used the oven it had that weird plastic, chemically smell that only brand new ovens have. I can’t imagine a life where I don’t use the oven. Even if you hate to cook, don’t you use it for frozen and premade foods???

Well, I got a job offer! It's a job at a small payroll company (I would be the third employee), which means I won't be mired in office politics anymore, and the company owner seems like a good guy and really wants me. It's maybe not exactly what I've been looking for, but it seems like it will be interesting work and I desperately need a change of scenery. The commute is 10 miles closer, too, which is a plus. I told him today I want the job, just need to navigate the health care marketplace and figure out what my options are (the company is going to give me a stipend for marketplace benefits). I'll be starting mid-January. Definitely have a lot of feelings about leaving my job and my coworkers, but I'm ready to move on.

She’s out of time in this life. So yes, let’s please come spend 2 weeks getting to know the grandchildren you have never tried to take an interest in. So that they can be utterly devastated when you’re gone, but your guilt can be slightly assuaged.

You’re not an asshole tj. When family relationships have been acrimonious or toxic and then that person dies or is dying... idk. You feel like you’re supposed to forget all of the negative impacts the relationship or person has had in the past. But it just isn’t possible. You can only do your best in that tough situation.

And that’s how I have been operating. I’m doing this for mh. Bc he won’t get a second chance. But today? She’s acting like she deserves this. And using MY nicknames on MY babies. And telling mh that his memories are wrong. And if you’re not going to behave, then you need to shush. But I’d prefer you just behave and we keep up the charade until it’s time and then we all grieve what might have been. But you just have to be quiet ok.

tj, I can vouch for the fact that people often go utterly bananas when confronted with their own mortality. It isn't pretty. Good luck. You're supporting your H as best as you can, and that's a good thing. And to her, BEHAVE. And shush.

Congrats Dramaphile! And tj, you are so not an asshole. I think we know who the asshole is, and it's most unfortunate. That's a tough thing to navigate, hugs and booze.

I have no idea what to make for dinner tonight.
I think I might make the kids a pizza and stick with chicken salad for us.

Confession: I think you should keep your kid in a twin bed until college if for no other reason than they won’t be the kid who complains about twin or XLtwin beds if they are in college dorms.
I’m not talking about the 6’ tall teenagers. If you’re legit too tall for a bed, fine.

But seriously, we plan to keep them in their twin beds until they move out. When they get their first apartment I plan to offer a nice dresser, night stand and full/queen bed and matress. Depending on our financial situation at the time. I feel like every adult should at least have a decent box spring and matress to get a good nights rest.
