This movie has been all over my social media for the past few days. Does anyone else that actually watched it want to have a discussion about it?

My initial thoughts:
I thought it was really powerful. Yes, there are themes of the hyper-sexualization of young girls. But it’s also learning how to transition from a child to a woman (including getting her damn period), peer pressure/trying to fit in, religion, fitting in as an immigrant in the new generation. It covered so much and I thought it was pretty beautiful.
We were supposed to be uncomfortable. That’s the point. Because 11 year old girls do know about sex/sexuality and they think they need it to wield power in a world where they are often valued for little else. If you look at it for the dancing, you’re missing the message completely.

I have not seen it, but read a commentary from one of the BIPOC authors I follow that mentioned the hypersexualization of darker skinned girls. I'm intrigued and want to watch with my own perspective when I have the mental capacity to watch critically.

H's work is closing for two weeks while the main artery into town gets a bridge replaced, so hopefully I'll have some time to watch without being worried about time or kids or dinner or bullshit.

It’s definitely not something you want to watch with distractions. But I’ll disagree with 99% of social media and say it’s not inappropriate for almost all of the movie. There are a few key dance scenes that need to happen to make the point. But the rest of the movie is as risqué as Now and Then 🤷♀️

I agree, I did not find it inappropriate. I found it interesting how little parent involvement there was in the girls' lives. They were so wrapped up in work and their own issues that things slip past them, like her wearing her brother's shirts, acquiring a phone and social media accounts. A lot of the dance moves they were doing can be found in tik tok challenges right now. Was it sexualized, yes, but that was the point and the critics clearly missed that. I think the same people who felt it was exploitative are the same people who felt JLos Superbowl performance was inappropriate.

We are 2/3 of the way through and I agree with your assessment bunnyfungo. Pretty much everyone I have seen on social media that has issues with this movie is some sort of QAnon believer that saw that this movie was bad somewhere on the internet, and ran with it without actually watching it.

thatgolfb My BIL (who is all in on every conspiracy theory) posted that this movie is a gateway to normalizing pedophilia so "they" (whoever they are) can get pedophilia recognized as a sexuality.

Because QAnon. 🙄 (Not directed at you, SB) The thing is... it’s not pedophilia. It’s not child pornography, as some people (on social media) have said. The only people that would view it as pedophilia are those who seek to view it that way to fit their narrative. The kids are dancing. It’s supposed to be somewhat provocative, but the movie isn’t condoning that behavior in any way. It’s a message that kids that age DO have access to technology, many times despite our best efforts as parents, and are seeing adult things, a lot of which they don’t understand. I haven’t finished the movie, but I heard it ends with the main character sort of realizing she isn’t comfortable with what she is doing? Hopefully that isn’t a spoiler for anyone. Again, I haven’t finished it yet.

I mean, the costumes they are wearing don’t seem much different than some of the costumes on Dance Moms and the like. I have seen some dancing on clips of Toddlers and Tiaras that made my eyes widen a bit. It’s basically the same thing, and the movie is a warning against that sort of thing for young kids.

I’m really shocked that this movie is getting all this blow back. It’s about girls growing up in today’s world and what that all means.
So many people saw a poster and decided what this movie was about and the internet exploded. Netflix made the poster that caused all the “controversy” to begin with.
I hate that this movie is being targeted by people who have never seen it but decided they knew all about it based on one image.
But, then - I’m not surprised at all because here we are.

And if you compare the Netflix poster with the original....it’s clear that Netflix royally fucked up the marketing. Hopefully that’s not huge, I’m on mobile.
