I've had a hard time keeping up with this thread lately but wanted to share that my grandma (86) got covid, was hospitalized, and has mostly recovered. She's still on oxygen but has been back at her memory care facility for a few days and seems to be doing alright. It remains to be seen what long-term impacts it will have on her dementia which took a sharp downturn while she was in the hospital. It took FL dept of health (not sure if it's her county's or the state's) over a week to send someone in to test her memory care facility patients and staff and then 2 more days to get results. Obviously most of them tested positive. But still... it made me scratch my head that they'd wait so long given the way that covid has torn through these types of facilites. In the meantime they brought in a bunch of temp staffing to expose those people? Seems like if you've already let the staff be there for 9 days after a known positive, you might as well just let them stay at this point. Rather than expose a whole new group of people to 40-something positive covid patients.

millimeter314 It's hard to see our kids disappointed and sad about missing out! I keep telling my kids that despite what we see others do, we each have to do our best to keep others safe and that will look different from family to family, area to area. Sweetjane good luck with in person school. We started last week and I was a basket of nerves. After reading through our districts covid plan and my state education covid plan I feel comfortable with the direction they are moving and am trying to release those things I can't control. My kiddos spirits were lifted this week being able to be around other kids again. I hope your kids have the same experience!

lunarscallion I’m sorry about your grandma and hope the long term effects are minimum I want to touch on the state health department taking a week to investigate- it may not be on them.. Here (my state), we are being blocked from entering care facilities to investigate, and that takes time to get through in order to be able to do our jobs

I was at Subway for lunch yesterday and the girls’ mask said “this mask is as useless as our Governor” I couldn’t read the whole thing until I paid. I was aghast. Made me want to throw away my food.

My guess is that she was acting in a rogue fashion and her DM or whoever governs subway would not think that was ok.

I'm shocked the employer is allowing that. Whether you believe masks work any kind of politics on a mask when you deal with the public is no no.

The arguments about Halloween have started on my local Mom's group on fb. I’m waiting for them to heat up here. We’re not participating this year; the need to argue with others about it just isn’t stirring in my breast though. Eta here as in where I live. Though not interested in arguing with y’all either.

Ugh. So I am teleworking (got approval from my district). Our district is virtual, but all teachers have to teach from their classroom unless they got permission. In the letter that stated permission, there were rules set up--no kids/pets on camera at all; dressed professionally, etc. And you can't teach from your living space (which I assume means bedroom). So our bedroom is where our desk is and the ONLY quiet place to telework. (we have a nanny for the girls and dogs) so there is way too much noise downstairs. Plus it has a deadbolt. I ordered a privacy screen on Amazon, it came--but I stupidly ordered the wrong size. Now I am completely stressing about camera angles and if my bed shows up at all on camera. But then I think about all the people that telework from a guest room. Or don't have an actual extra room for an office. And my frustration grows. Because I know a parent will complain if they see an inch of the bed.

Well, we’re full steam ahead with the learning pod starting tomorrow.
It’s set up in a family’s garage and the teacher lives next door. She’s set up a reading nook in the tree house in her yard.
I’m nervous and excited and just a bit concerned it’ll all be a failed experiment, but here we go!

fancynewbeesly I’ve been doing video calls from my bedroom sporadically (depending on my childcare scenario) and my bed is in the corner of my screen view. As long as the headboard and pillows aren’t showing, it’s hard to definitively say it’s a bed. I take a plain quilt and tuck it really tight. Is it a bed? Is it a chaise? Upholstered ottoman? Who can tell? Also screw any parent that would complain about that.

Fortunately for us she is self-motivated with school and doesn’t need a lot of prodding to pay attention.

The teacher and other families want to do the bare minimum screen time and supplement off screen. Which I’m in favor of, but our school’s schedule is pretty heavily screen time, so I don’t want to opt out of DS’s actual class either. Tbd, but I hope it’s good like yours!

chocolatecake That’s what we have been talking about. She understands and agrees, especially since I’m pregnant and we want to keep baby sister safe. It’s just hard sometimes! She did end up talking to her BFF on FaceTime for an hour this afternoon and it helped so much! She drew a picture of herself for him to put in his room and drew a picture of him for her room. I’m dropping it off for him tomorrow.

Her younger is in pre-K and that daycare has expanded to offer pods based on school for older kids. She only got into Mon and Tues for her older but she’s still so glad to have it. Good luck!

DD is in a similar situation, 2 of the kids in her pod are Montessori, and their day is much less structured. So they are doing worksheets or some other activity and she’s on her Teams call. She’s got a good pair of headphones, I think that helps. I hope it works out!

It really does. Let people do what works for them on this one. I’m planning on an “pumpkin hunt” Easter style with a piñata, ring toss on some witches hats, and smoking cocktails for the adults. We’re meeting up with a family we’ve germed with and it’ll at least be memorable! I just think you can really do a lot more than going to strangers houses and feeling uncomfortable with everyone touching everything. I’ve got a pin board 😂

Distance learning starts tomorrow. I really hope we can make this work while I work full time out of the home. MH will be here, but he’s getting ready for a big promotion in the beginning of next year, so his job can’t suffer.
I have stocked up on white claws.

Our district voted to start phasing in hybrid students next week. They still have a lot more things to do to get ready so this week of school is basically a bust. DD1's teacher sent out their weekly schedule and other than a 15 minute meeting every morning there is no other work planned so I guess I'll need to plan some work to keep DD1 occupied this week.
I'm annoyed since her teacher is purely a virtual teacher and won't be going in to school but they have district meetings and trainings all week now.
My nephew will be going hybrid and he is so stressed about it and wearing a mask all day. So I hope the transition for hybrid goes well and we don't see huge spikes with that and Labor Day weekend.

Daycare has a positive teacher. This is only the second one this whole time, and we’ve had no positive kids. (They’ve been masking since well before our mandate.) So FX everyone else stays healthy this time around too.
I’ve not heard of anything in the public schools after two weeks, so I’m being cautiously optimistic there.

Ugh. So school starts tomorrow and we haven't heard ANYTHING from DD's teacher. Not a schedule, etc. I mean I know she logs in when school starts--but I am not a fan of zero communication. We start virtually and I know this teacher is very uncomfortable with teaching virtually, so I am giving her grace. But I am still disappointed that we don't have a schedule for the day yet. Hopefully it improves quickly. DD goes to the school I teach at, so I don't want to start making waves either with a co worker. But I am not impressed yet.

I told my oldest that we would have a Halloween “party” with grandparents and uncles since it’s a Saturday and they are the people we see regularly anyway. We will have a candy scavenger hunt so that he can still walk around and put candy in his candy bucket. He was all in for the idea so I’m glad Halloween will still be special for him. And obviously the babies will be some assortment of adorable animals because baby animal costumes are the best.

I’m not even super into Halloween in general but it is so on brand for 2020 to have the first Saturday Halloween in 5 years be tainted by Covid.

I think I may want to do something for Halloween just for our close friends and maybe the twin 2 year olds next door. Some sort of... activity pack with a some candy thrown in? That we can drop on their doorsteps. Maybe I will include a small hand sanitizer. 😂
There hasn’t been much talk here about Halloween yet. The girls won’t be TOT and DD1 is okay with it.
