Re back to school, what would people’s ideal solution be? Obviously no corona would be great but that’s not a reality. I’m just so torn because DS is an only and for 3 months he didn’t speak to a single other child and it was having a very obvious affect on him. He’s been at camp since July and it’s been such a relief to see him acting like a happy kid again. On top of that he’s 6 and still doesn’t read, or write, or know all the letters and sounds. We can only do so much but I work 40+ hours a week. Everything says it’s all fine until age 7 and that kids will catch up bu that age but 7 is creeping up on us and I worry that he’s going to be doomed to a lifetime of poor academic performance.
I’m kind of just talking out loud because I have no one else to talk to except H, who I’m bored of talking to

The prorogation has me wondering about leadership. Would they dare to replace Trudeau?

My life, emma . My life. What I would prefer re: school opening is small classes, one teacher per class ONLY (no rotary prep coverage, which likely means ending 48 minutes early), 2m distancing, all students K-12 wear masks (maybe grade 1+, not K, I dunno), limited bus capacity for only those who absolutely need it, plexiglas barrier for my desk, N95 for school staff and not just surgical masks. Instead, I am getting regular class sizes, 2 surgical masks per day, no plexiglas, full buses with 3 to a seat, 1m distance when possible, up to 3 teacher contacts per class, only grades 4-12 wearing masks.

Calgary is making masks required for K-12 and I think DS class size is around 20 with 1 teacher except for PE and Music which may be cancelled this year. I don’t pay much attention to bus notifications since we don’t use it

The prorogation has me wondering about leadership. Would they dare to replace Trudeau? I can't see them doing that but you never know. Blanchet is saying if the throne speech doesn't cut it he may not survive a vote of confidence. I'm confused about the actual process of how that would work so off to google... Chrystia Freeland is taking over the finance minister position. This is a tough time to have a cabinet shuffle especially with the CERB coming to an end in September. www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-cabinet-finance-minister-1.5690404

MB here. School stats in 3 weeks. One going into grade 2. Masks recommended for grade 4+ but I've ordered a few for him jic. My two other kids go back to dc in part time basis starting the first week of sept. I'm back at work full time begining of October. I also have to arrange for before/after school care. I'm excited for them to get socialization back but terrified of bursting our bubble. School, daycare, care for my 2nd grader, me back to work all within a few weeks.. Also excited to get back into 'normal' but dreading packing lunches and the evening rush. Basically I'm a mess.

I don't know what I would consider ideal.. my province is in a unique situation, in that (for now) we have the virus under control and it actually could be safe to return to school in-person and normal capacity. I'm just really head-tilty over the mixed messages (safe to have full classrooms and packed hallways, but not safe to take the bus) and then putting it on parents to figure out how to make it work.

Oh my GOD. Lecce issued a memo to boards today saying that they could stagger start over TWO weeks now.
It's so disingenuous because he knows some boards have already gone too far with their planning, so they can't just go back now and redo their start schedule. Now they can say they did what we wanted without actually offering us the opportunity to... you know, use it.

OCDSB director just confirmed that class sizes will not be reduced based on remote learning numbers. So, you know, schools will have empty classrooms next to full classes of 25+. Cool. That's responsible.
The boards are all scared of the Ministry taking them over if they violate their duties by passing imbalanced budgets. And it's a thing that can happen - it happened in Ottawa in 2003. But if the largest boards in Ontario all called the government's bluff at the same time, I really don't see the Ministry trying to run all public schools in the GTA and Ottawa simultaneously. They can't even run themselves.

DS’s board sent an email just now saying classes will be staggered over three days and that remote classes will start on the 21st. So I guess he has another month off.

Not that it's a bad thing - gives time to actually prep - I'm just surprised. When do in-person classes start? My board is doing that staggered entry thing to. I don't really see the point if it's only over 3-4 days.

For remote it says the teacher will contact us within the first two weeks and then “classes will begin on Monday the 21st”.

! Toronto boards now looking to delay school start to the week of the 14th. Staff will still be in the week before to actually have time to set up, train, etc.
Fingers crossed my own board makes the same move. And I hope they all tell the Ministry to fuck off if they're told they can't do this.

My Province has made masks mandatory in all indoor public places as of Monday. There was a protest against it yesterday. There were only like 4 people who showed up. The "leader" of the whole thing is also anit-vaxx and believes masks are the first step in the government forcing us to "inject chemicals" into our bodies...

Anyone paying attention to the conservative leader selection last night? They were talking about it on CBC this morning and what Erin O'Toole represents. I don't know much about it but they were saying he's right of MacKay and represents continued support in the party for social conservative values

I don't know much about it but they were saying he's right of MacKay and represents continued support in the party for social conservative values I know this is truly taking the low road but I cannot believe they really picked someone with the last name O’Toole. Right of MacKay doesn’t inspire enthusiasm from me. I donated to the NDP yesterday in an effort to control what I can!

It's weird, honestly, because O'Toole was... not at ALL a social conservative the last time he ran for leadership. He's openly pro-choice and has talked about feeling that same-sex marriage is "just marriage," for example. When he ran for leadership before, he lost hardcore because he was too moderate. This time around, it's like he's a completely different person, definitely just trying to find a niche and fill it.
So... a politician, basically. I don't know how much he'll actually push social conservative values because they're not actually his beliefs, based on what he's said in the past.
I expect Bernier to come out swinging and try to pull actual social conservatives away from the CPC because of O'Toole's wish-washy record. It... might actually be a good thing for the rest of us.

I want to think positively like this but look at what a posturing nincompoop like Trump has been able to inspire and accomplish 😳 Just the term “social conservative” being something people proudly identify with feels like a new era. I’m much more used to people claiming to be fiscal conservatives, social moderates or whatever.

I just have to hope that after the epic failure that has been Doug Ford, Canada would be smarter than to hand the CPC or PPC too much power. I expect the Liberals to lose the next election (they'd have to ditch Trudeau to win) but MAN, I hope it's another minority. A pandemic is the right time for a minority, frankly. No one can do anything too crazy and everyone has to try to be reasonable to get stuff done.

Tlex - Relevant to your interests, motion tonight to delay school start to Sept. 14. I expect the Director to raise equity issues but other boards have made this call and the MoE has approved it, so I'm curious to see where it goes tonight.

I was also surprised at how openly they were talking about social conservative values, I had to look it up to make sure I had it right. The strategists on CBC were talking about how basically this shows that there is still a strong base that supports those values but that they won't be able to grow in places where they need to (e.g. Montreal, Toronto) while keeping that part of their public messaging. So they basically said the plan is to quietly believe those things and rally those who do while publically claiming to be more moderate. I'm paraphrasing, obviously. And somehow find a way to support climate action while also keeping Alberta.
If we go into an election I have no idea what will happen. I agree Liberals will likely lose with Trudeau but they also aren't going to ditch him now. I hope they NDP can rally more people. I'll be doing what I can for them.

Given that they only closed the posting for remote teachers at midnight on Sunday, no one I know who has applied has heard if they are teaching remotely or in person, and school organization (virtual and in-person) won't be done until end of this week, my guess is that it's for both. There's no way EITHER model will actually be ready for September 3rd.
