A truly stunning display of time wasting over here at the board meeting. Here is the meeting in a nutshell: The inefficiency of these meetings... the late hours... the time wasting telling people not to waste time... is this all normal?

I had never watched one before the pandemic started and we were approaching schools reopening. They are applying Robert's Rules in just... the strangest ways. The late hours are normal, but meeting this often isn't. Really earning that lame paycheque this year.

I just got an update from the school board and it mentioned that about 16% of students decided to enrol in virtual learning. I'm surprised that wasn't higher
They also added videos for how schools will work and all the safety measures. I got a little emotional about the masks and social distancing, i know it's necessary but it sucks

I am so upset over the change to how highschool was set to run to what our board announced last night. They basically said that the ministry called a meeting friday night and they have had to change the plan. So instead of 2 classes a day on hybrid the kids will be taking 1 class all day switching every other week. Could you imagine being stuck in Math all day. No thank you. They said ministry said it was to many kids in contact with eachother. Yet no change to class sizes in elementary.

I know, Cupcakemama. The same change was made in my board (are we in the same city?) and it's insane. Meanwhile I'm over here with 90 students à week while the teenagers have to limit contacts at school buuuuut are all hanging out in close contact on their free time?...

I’m not sure which city you’re in but it’s ridiculous. We are in the largest board outside of the GTA. I am so sad for all the kids. I realize there is really no perfect solution but I feel like they could have done a much better job for both sets of kids. I think the original plan for highschool was not terrible but what they’ve changed it to is, and I feel they have not put enough in place for the elementary kids. Ugh.

This makes me so sad. Update from OCDSB where the vote was 8-3 to increase police presence in some of the most high need, vulnerable schools http://instagram.com/p/CEZbYMtnbcD

This makes me so sad. Update from OCDSB where the vote was 8-3 to increase police presence in some of the most high need, vulnerable schools It isn't an increase, but it's still a shitty decision. They voted last week to defund the two police officers for those schools and give the money to the schools instead, so they could decide how best to spend it. Trustees then decided they made that decision too hastily because the principals would have trouble spending that money on SROs anyway, so they repealed the decision. So the same level of (armed!!) police as what those schools have had, but a total slap in the face to the delegations who spoke at the meeting. Notably, every delegation that spoke in favour of defunding the SROs was either a former student with first-hand experience in those schools or a representative of BIPOC community organizations. Every delegation that spoke against defunding SROs was white. So much performance. The heavy sighs as one trustee voted for the repeal, the comments about reviewing. Lyra brought this issue up a full year ago and no one bothered consulting (except her) so they're just hoping to shove this issue off until "everything blows over," I'm sure. Their only reason for repealing the decision was that the principals wouldn't be able to get SROs with the money, so it's pretty fucking obvious where they stand and they can drop their "we need consultation!" act.

In other news - behold, the Ontario Ministry of Education: I know I don't belong here but my God RIGHT? I had to make sure it wasn't a parody account at first. I laughed so loud thinking there was no way it was real, but it was. And that tweet was up for two days before people caught on and started sharing it. Not saying the comms team has to be made up of education experts, but knowing when to do a basic Google search should probably be a job requirement.

I’m so beyond exhausted. Thank you to all who are continuing to make noise about the situation in Ontario. I really don’t think parents understand that keeping their kids home doesn’t make class sizes smaller for the kids going in. And we could change that.
I reached a point of utter defeat when I saw how Ford is planning to allocate our share of the $2B from the feds. I’m disappointed in Trudeau yet again for not putting conditions on the spending. Way to leave us in the lurch.
Now MH’s return to work date is fucky due to the board pushing the school start date back, so guess who will be figuring out how to work, cover a coworkers vacation, and care for a 3 kids 6 and under for the next 3 weeks? It me! (I support pushing the date back, I get it, but I’m fucked and bummed out)

I got an email from my school board last night (tdsb) and they said they are looking at how they can spend the funding to further reduce class sizes, enhance cleaning procedures, get additional caretakers, and additional technology. Are other boards doing it differently? Also, I’m sorry you’re screwed with child care. We’ve been so close to returning and it sucks not being able to plan.

Ford has allocated the funding into specific areas. Boards really can't deviate from what he's decided. My board - one of the largest in Ontario - got enough money for "additional staffing" to hire... 25 teachers. Total. For the entire board, elementary and secondary.

Once again our company pulls through. We reached out to HR and they’ve given MH another extension on his leave till the 14th to get us through the staggered start. I think this might be the longest paternity leave in Canadian history (started when our son was 6 weeks, he’s now 18m). I swear I will work for them until I die if they’ll have me.

Parents at the playground were discussing the possibility of a teachers strike, sentiment was....not supportive. I’m not used to that. I usually hear some grumbles along with “but I support them, it’s just hard with childcare and all that.” I hate to see Lecce splitting people into sides. Parents and educators have the same goal, give our kids the best. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/lab-our-complaint-union-ontario-schools-1.5706429

Honestly I really love all our posters over here and am always grateful for the varying perspectives. Before Trump, I followed international news pretty closely and spent a lot more time reading about foreign policy. I'd welcome more discussion of/posts about current events that aren't US-centric. It's just hard on this end to keep up with much else because the domestic news is a non-stop deluge.

Tlex am I reading that right, and none of the districts plan to follow health recommendations around what to do if there's a possible case in the school?

I was explaining about the way the ministry has backed them into a corner in a lot of ways with lack of guidance or plans being approved at the last minute, refusing to bend etc. I am surprised how much the Ford narrative is being accepted.

Tlex am I reading that right, and none of the districts plan to follow health recommendations around what to do if there's a possible case in the school? The government built grey area/loopholes into its outbreak management plan for schools. In the event of a confirmed case: IF the PHU decides there was a risk of transmission, they will assess students and staff to decide if they were at high risk of exposure. IF they were deemed to be at high risk, they will isolate. Classroom cohorts will "generally" be considered high risk (but my money is on them using every excuse to say that the risk of transmission was low).

My guess is, we will hear a lot of the following to justify not isolating full classes:
- The student was only in the building for ____ minutes. - The student was never at school with symptoms. - The class was outdoors while the student was present. - The student wore a mask at all times.

misskilljoy what do you/they mean by isolate? Like everyone at home for 2 weeks/negative test? Or isolating the class within the school setting for two weeks (beyond cohorting measures)?
