milano,is there any online portal you have logged into at all? Like, I used one to get my J enrolled at the school. His teacher assignment was in there. Our roll out was very poorly communicated as well. Particularly the tech pickup. I suspect it was intentional because they didn't have enough and people would get frustrated and not do it.

Check spam as well. We are getting weekly emails from Es principle and one went to a different folder in my Google mail.

Nope! Zero emails or phone calls. My neighbor is experiencing the same thing, she ended up calling the office about teacher assignment but her kid is going in-person so she doesn't have to worry about the laptop stuff since they will set it up for him on his first day of school.

They've changed P's classroom/teacher twice. She's going to be devastated that shes no longer in a room with a loft (or treehouse as she calls it). totally not a real issue in this crazy world, but she's not going to take it well. I'm not even going to mention other kids on her class list until I see them in the flesh.

I was just asked on a call when school starts here for my kid, and I said not until september 14th. and then confirmed in my head that she had an exactly 6 month summer break. March 13 to Sept 14th.
Good lord let it end soon. Kids needs to get out of here.

I am about to have a rage-stroke at the parent-chat for DS1’s class. I don’t know if I can do it, I really don’t.

I'm so sorry. They're trying to keep kids who have social connections outside of school together, here, because they know parents will HAVE to send their kids to other places for after school childcare, or during-school small remote learning groups. But they're probably being extra careful about that here because honestly, it's only a matter of time until cases here rise again. Not if they will. Our district seems to be ignoring that part of the puzzle. Our neighboring district (where the other two parents in the microschool teach) are telling families to not get together outside of school. They're operating with a hybrid schedule, so that is just utter ridiculousness. There is a local gymnastics place that JUST announced that they're running a virtual school for kids to do their school's virtual program there. They're keeping the program to 8 kids and it would have cost about the same as our microschool. But we can't switch to virtual at this point. So. Oh dude. I bet you could switch to virtual if that’s your preference. Get ahold of your superintendent and tell them you’re a local business owner who supports all kinds of other local business owners and you need to get onto that virtual train now that the gymnastics place has announced. Beg, plead and bribe with baked goods.

E starts remote learning on the 8th. We have received zero communication about what that will entail. I’m pissed. I would like some time to gear up for homeschooling if it turns out they want kids on the computer for six hours a day. But I don’t want to put a bunch of energy into something we may not need. I just wish we could have any kind of heads up for what this will look like.

Our school board starts on the 8th as well. They just announced that virtual learning will start at 180 minutes/day of instruction for Kinder and go up from there. I don’t know how anyone is going to manage.

All the rumors I've seen on fb groups sound good but they are all rumors, nothing has been substantiated. I'm very "Jesus take the wheel" at this point.

Work just emailed and they have identified a lot of new office spaces, and will be bringing most of us back onsite without rotating WFH and onsite. I *think* I will be allowed to WFH in the mornings and onsite from 1-5, which at least means I can help with M in the mornings. It’s just stressful trying to cram most of the work in early. In related news, J thinks he may get furloughed at the end this week.

Okay, first day today.
C needs a bunch of help with navigation. There's some back and forth with zoom links that they are trying to get kids to follow. He's fallen off his chair twice, but I think it's still a good option for him.
E is doing pretty awesome once we got her into the first meeting properly.
It's slow, but so far it's going a lot better than I expected.
F is living her best life watching PJ masks on the TV in the basement.

P's school threw us for a loop this morning by calling and asking if we want to be in a class with most of her old friends, and one old teacher...or stay where we were originally put. A month ago it would have been a simple go with the old, but we figured out two families we know in the new class, the teachers are new to her but just as great (and she had the old teachers 2 years now and kind of needed a change). And the parents in the old class just dont vibe with us. But...all her friends.
Well she's a social kid and we'd already told her new class new teachers - so we went with it. But that hour we took to decide was ugly.
**There had originally been one friend from her old class but they dropped out, today apparently. School starts monday.
Is it 2021 yet?

Oh. Em. Gee.
E got kicked out of school today for having reflux. Reflux y’all. Didn’t even vomit. Just said “my tummy and throat hurt.” Can’t come back without a negative covid test and a drs note re reflux.
Listen. I get it. Everyone is being overly cautious and above and beyond. And it’s the best we can do.
But also. She was sent to the office 50 times last year for reflux. (Her teacher had less patience for her whining than I do.) She has kept meds in the school office for 3 years for reflux. And yet they are trying to tell me that a reflux diagnosis is not in her charts?!
And also. No fever. She straight up said “I’m having reflux and it’s making my tummy and throat hurt.” This. Isn’t. New. We’ve struggled with reflux her literal entire life. Anyone remember her puking up blood when she was 5 days old? And they won’t even accept a rapid test. It must be pcr which is a minimum of 10 days (bc time of test + weekend plus, fucking covid) so by then she might as well just quarantine and I’ll home school her forever and fucking go more insane.

Omg TJ what a mess. My prediction is that once everyone starts sneezing and sniffling the whole schools will be sent home just in case. Sorry you seem to be the test case 🙁

I have been pretty confident about the whole virtual learning thing. Up until today, when I finally got some information and tried to have J login to the virtual open house on google classroom. What.The.Fuck.Was.I.Thinking. Me trying to coordinate this child's learning at home is going to be a disaster. He doesn't listen to a damn thing I say and seems incapable of being quiet for any length of time. I feel like it is just going to be a power struggle every day to get him on his daily live teacher calls. The amount of work he will have seems very manageable but I don't want to fight with him every day.
And, they had some pre-recorded videos for the kids to watch to welcome them back to school but they all referenced physically going to school multiple times so now he is all confused as to why some kids get to go and he doesn't and he wants a playground at his house and how is he going to eat lunch with his friends and why can't I trade my car in and get a schoolbus instead because that would be more fun.
I'm panicking. I am not prepared. I hated being homeschooled as a kid. I never wanted to homeschool my own kids. I am aware that this isn't the same but he is still here all day instead of going to school.

milano, you’re gonna be ok. I promise. This is just the part where all the information got dumped on you and you haven’t had time to process it all. You’ll feel a little better tomorrow and even better next week and next month. You’ll get into the swing of it. And someday not in the too far out future, you’ll long for the days when you did remote learning and you had time for breakfast and didn’t have to run around looking for shoes 60 seconds before you need to leave.

I am aware that this isn't the same but he is still here all day instead of going to school. Yes. One thing that helped a ton was making a schedule. If he’s not reading, make it a picture schedule. 30 minute increments or less if you can, alternating a difficult skill activity with an easier or active activity. You could even stretch the truth and say it’s the teacher’s schedule (cause you ARE the teacher.) That way it isn’t you he is arguing. It’s the pre-written schedule. If he can’t/won’t try to do the harder thing, he won’t get to do the fun thing. And give it lots and lots of time for him to understand it. He hasn’t done much in the sense of traditional schooling right? So he doesn’t have that habit of routine? So you will have to instill it. I even out letting out the chickens and feeding chickens leftovers from lunch as tasks on our schedule. It was quite a bit easier (at least with E) when she knew what to expect and when. (So yes nikkipal, masaaaaybe it miiiiiiight get some better. But don’t go getting a big head about that.) Anyway. Mostly just solidarity. Can I send you a gift card for wine slushees?

I just think everyone’s freaking out and trying not to make exceptions. I hope they get it squared away for you. I know. And I get it. I’m a rule follower. And I work in covid research. I know that is the right thing to do. But we also have to have a tiny bit of common sense. Like acid reflux isn’t a symptom. Would they send home a kid with diagnosed adhd because altered mental status is a covid symptom? Would they send a kid with diabetes home for high blood sugar becomes diabetic ketoacidosis is a covid symptom? A kid with a rash bc .3% of children hospitalized with significant covid-related disease get MIS-C? And this is a part where I have to step back and not let my education interfere with the school’s rules. Bc I know much more about covid than a 60 year old principal. Plus we’ve 99% sure already had it. And that definitely colors my feelings on it. But I’m sure I came across as quite the fucking Karen today.

tj grumpycakes Thank you. Yes, information overload for sure. I am definitely making a visual schedule for him to follow each day which will help, he can check things off as he goes. He did get excited about the Kindergarten workbook thing I picked up for him to do so I think maybe he is just not used to the computer and is more comfortable with papers, like he did in preschool. Once he gets the hang of the computer stuff it will probably be smoother. DEEP BREATHS, MILANO.
