Our superintendent has been quoted that he wants to start virtual for the beginning. It is so frustrating. They don’t have extra funds so they really can’t guarantee student or staff safety. He actually said that. Meanwhile the neighboring district got tons of funding so they are having mobile trailers for extra classrooms, hiring over 100 full time subs, testing for all teachers and students. And are going back 5 days full time. It makes me so upset and frustrated at the inequities of funding. We lost so much funding from years ago and now we are in a tight spot. We have no resources to hire more nurses, custodians, subs, etc. it just sucks. This is so incredibly wrong and sad. I'm sorry.

coldcoffeeIt is awful. And an unintended consequence especially now is resentment of neighboring districts. And there have unfortunately already been resentment but now it is way more

Good question. I'm wondering this too. And I think I should get new headphones for DS1. Depending on how they structure the synchronous learning and videos and all, I sure as hell don't need to hear it. My oldest's school asked them to have a headset with a built-in microphone Oh! Excellent idea. I wouldn't have thought of this. Did you get a pair yet?

I'm starting to think I'd rather do virtual than hybrid school now that we are facing this. Someone talk me out of it lol I was going to do hybrid (one week on one week home alternating and the in building days were only half days the rest done afternoon virtual ). I’ve changed to totally virtual because honestly all the social aspects of school are gone this year if safety is followed. Mask, 6 ft apart, desks forward vs in collaboration style, no recess, no lunch. So that’s not socializing. We decided having the every other week exposure for no benefit isn’t worth it. We will plan small play times social times with their friends and that’s fine. There will be no socializing if schools are following safety precautions do I don’t go for the but my kid needs to socialize thing. There’s ways outside of school building kept apart with no time or ability to hang with friends like before in class or recess or lunch. So that’s our thinking on why we switched.

I’m sorry sheilathetank I feel every part of your pain, even my neighbor letting us plug our fridge into his generator (which has honestly saved my sanity). I don’t understand how nobody can be here to at least move the stuff so we can leave the street, even if they can’t fix it right now. There are 10 homes behind the downed wires and trees. At least three of my neighbors are single people on their late 80’s. If they have a medical emergency medics will have to hike in to them. What if there is a house fire? A fire truck couldn’t get in. At least today is cooler. I am tired of being hot and grumpy. I'm so sorry. Are the trees on wires where you are? That's our biggest problem right now. We have plenty of crews to cut down trees, but many of them are on wires and the power company hasn't gotten here yet. At least the governor here is pissed and is threatening legal action against the power companies because I guess after Sandy they had legal obligations to respond in such a manner to prevent this from happening again and they didn't.

I didn’t know that you went to college there! It’s been such a nice escape to live there this summer at MH’s grandmas beach house. Our area is so gorgeous because it’s the beauty of the beach and farmland everywhere. We really want to relocate there. So much RI love here! It warms my heart. In college (in MA) my MA and CT friends would argue over which state RI "belonged" to as a suburb. Hmph. I love it. I’ve been staying at hotel Viking in Newport for like 20 years. We try for once a summer. Such a stunning area.

Apparently each school gets to choose a model out of several that the DoE has laid out. The school chooses based on what would make the most sense for their schools need. One school I just heard about is using the most insane A,B,C model. I think A kid go Monday and Wednesday, B kids go Tuesday and Thursday. C kids go Friday. I think that’s how it goes. I just know that some kids go 2 days a week and some kids go 1. I feel like that’s a mess. What happens if a kid shows up on the wrong day? I don’t know how that works. The ABC model I saw from the DOE for elem is like that but then the weeks alternate too: So. W1 A is MW, B is TTh, C is F W2: A is W, B is MTh, C is T, F W3: A is TW, B is Th, C is MF Easy peasy! No one could possible mess that up, right?! ::said with sarcasm:: Jesus Mary and Joseph. That looks like the FD schedule LOL.

I went to our school zoom last night, and 87% of the teachers/school staff thought that school needed to start remotely because they don't feel safe and/or they were worried about other teachers/their families with vulnerable members at home. So many teachers and parents were getting choked up, medical accommodations are tricky, and some of their spouses have lost their jobs. I feel terrible.
I won't have the ability to continue to wfh all the time, but I'm now hoping that nyc starts remote because I think that would help in getting flexibility from work (vs opting into remote). If my kid's summer camp continues, I'd pursue that. (The counselors are younger and do feel comfortable- they have little groups of kids).
As it stands right now, I think kids are going to have to quarantine frequently because if you have any covid symptoms (which are also cold symptoms) or 100.1 fever, you're out for 14 days unless you get test results and a doctor's note.

So I think I’ve got DD into a “learning camp” aka place to do her distance learning and also socialize with other kids. It’s not finalized yet but I’m cautiously optimistic. Also...

DS and H have both been feeling off for the past day or two- headaches, fatigue, nothing serious. Except today H woke up with a low grade fever so I'm low key panicking now. I'm at work trying not to ask him every 10 minutes how he feels.

Our power has been out since Tuesday and they’re estimating at least 6 more days until it gets restored. I feel your pain.

Clearly the money didn't go where it needed to since the state is in the same situation.

MH and I made a plan last night and I'm feeling so much better about school this Fall now.
Hes gonna build a desk with shelves in our guest room. It'll be big enough the kids will each have their own side. They can use their headphones to watch videos so they don't disturb each other. The guest room is on the main floor so I can pop in and out and supervise as needed. It also has a door I can close so the toddler isn't climbing all over them while they're trying to concentrate.--We used the dining room table in the spring and that was a disaster. I had to sometimes shut her in her room by herself so she would let them do their schoolwork which felt terrible.-- This way I can supervise and the toddler can still do her thing during the day. After this year is over we will turn that into an office space and move the printer and shredder from living room into that desk space.
We will start out with the hybrid plan, the kids still want to go the two days a week. If its not working out or we don't feel comfortable then we will switch to all virtual
I'll probably let them pick out some cute little things from the dollar store also to make their desk space a little more cozy/cute

Our daycare chain is starting up an in-person, full-day kindergarten program for this fall. My oldest will be 4 in September so he will still be at daycare anyway, but this is so smart of them and will help so many families. It won't be cheap, but if my kid was supposed to be heading into K this year I would 100% be signing up for daycare's K class.

Our school rolled out their plans: 5 days/week full day in person, or 100% virtual. The in person would mean reduced class size, although we don’t know how reduced. Masks on buses and in hallways, but not required in the classroom for students preK-5. Parents will fill out a health questionnaire each morning. It sounds like lunch will be in the classroom, but more details to come. No updates to HVAC due to $.
My struggle is we live in a rural county that has had a much higher rate of infection. People are really resistant to masking and social distancing in general. These are the parents I would have to trust to self report.
MH is work from home, although he’s on conference calls all day. I’m home two days/week. My MIL watches our 9 month old in our house 3 days/week. So, 100% virtual isn’t impossible if MIL can help, just pretty inconvenient. I also worry if we send them in person and we expose MIL and FIL who has some underlying health conditions. DS has an IEP, gets OT/PT that we’d have to facilitate at home. DD1 would be starting preK, so like what’s even the point of virtual preK.
There would be points in the year where we can revaluate our choice. So maybe we start virtual and see if in person crashes and burns? I also need more details on if virtual work could be completed later in the day, or on weekends. Idk, it’s a lot to consider.

Due to power loss and the new mask requirements students have until next Thursday to choose a model. How the hell is there even enough time to create class lists. Like OMG. I just feel so under prepared.

Our district just voted Tuesday for an all virtual start but hasn't provided any information on whether it will be live, real time instruction or self paced. That of course makes a huge difference in what plans we need to put in place and I am really hoping the district has their shit together but I just can't tell. They said we'll have more info next week.
