Replying here so I don't bump last week's check in yourpaceormine most common strategy for ditching the shield is to remove mid feed when LO is still hungry & interested but not as demanding as at the beginning of the feed. Or you can pick one feed of the day that is typically a good/easy one and try without. Lots of great advice here: kellymom.com/ages/newborn/nb-challenges/wean-shield/rosesquared I'm sorry the weight check went poorly. I know several people at the old place did at breast supplementation and even more had to nurse/pump/feed with their newborn, but I don't know who all made it over here to tag. Making your own post has a better shot at getting the experienced response. Take care of yourself. You're doing great.

How old is LO? 9 1/2 weeks
How's everything going? Going good.
1-3mo: How do nights look at your house? Pretty good I guess. 1 4ish hour stretch, most nights
If you're pumping, how is that going? When are you returning to work, or are you SAH? SAH, pumping twice a day for the bigger kids.
GTKY: what is one feature of your dream home that your current home lacks? A play room.

yourpaceormine I used the nipple shield for all three of my kids. The oldest used it till 4 months, but was able to cut it out cold turkey. I tried not to worry about it too much. Yes it was a hassle and it sucked, but it got the job done.

How old is LO? Will be 7 weeks on Wednesday
How's everything going? Good. She's been a little congested, but still nursing okay.
Questions/concerns/cute stories to share? She's started cooing and kicking her little legs a lot the last couple of days.
0-1mo: Is this your first experience BF? No, I BF my DS until 25 months. What's one reason why you want to BF? Cheap and convenient
1-3mo: How do nights look at your house? That's usually fussy time for both her and the toddler so it's chaos. Everyone gets fed though lol
If you're pumping, how is that going? When are you returning to work, or are you SAH? I SAH, but pump for when I go on runs/workout. It's going good I suppose.
GTKY: what is one feature of your dream home that your current home lacks? Would love a new kitchen..granite counter tops and an updated stove/oven would be nice.

How old is LO? 9 weeks
How's everything going?
All good! Two month check up went well, and DS is as cute as ever.
Questions/concerns/cute stories to share?
We went to a gathering at my parents' house on Saturday, and DS gave the cutest pouty lip when H handed him to one of my aunts to hold. We were there during his evening fussy time, so I'm not surprised he wasn't feeling too social. Luckily, we were in and out and did bedtime at home.
0-1mo: Is this your first experience BF?
Yep! What's one reason why you want to BF?
Mainly health reasons, but a big part was I did NOT want to pay for formula on top of all the other baby related expenses.
1-3mo: How do nights look at your house?
DS starts getting fussy around 5PM, and he is DONE by 6/6:15. So, we do bedtime starting at 6, and he's down by 6:45/7. He used to just wake up a couple of times per night to feed, but now he's waking up randomly for soothing. I'm chalking it up to a leap right now, but he's confusing me. I used to just know that it was time to feed, but now I have to figure out if he's hungry or not. If I jump the gun, I get him all setup to nurse and he passes out before I even get him started. Any pointers? I try to count to 10 when he starts fussing to see if he'll calm down or escalate when it's not a "normal" feed time/interval. Then, I'll shush without picking him up. Finally, I'll pick him up and sway for a few seconds to see if he starts nuzzling. I just don't want to "train" him to keep waking up more frequently if he's just sleep crying and not actually hungry.
If you're pumping, how is that going? When are you returning to work, or are you SAH?
Pumped again (one side only) on Saturday and got 2 oz, which H gave him on Sunday and then I nursed him after. I'm guessing DS needs 3-4 oz per feeding? He's always hungry after just 2 oz. If that's the case, I should be able to get enough once I start pumping both sides.
GTKY: what is one feature of your dream home that your current home lacks? We bought a fixer and have already remodeled the kitchen, dining, and living area (open concept). Next step is a master suite and some exterior improvements.

How old is LO? 6 weeks this Friday
How's everything going? Maybe a little better? This is my first full week on my own with DW back at work. I'm feeling confident though I definitely like having help rather than being alone!
Questions/concerns/cute stories to share? Yesterday during tummy time K seemed to turn her head to look at the dog which was adorable! (She didn't turn her head to me lol!) 😝
1-3mo: How do nights look at your house? Such a crap shoot. But we must feed every 3 hours and we do every 4 hours twice during the night. And now feeding consists of nursing, bottle or supplimenting nursing system, and then pumping. I don't pump in the middle of the night though and K usually goes back to sleep super easily during the night. (Double edged sword she barely wakes up enough to eat but it seems to be enough.)
If you're pumping, how is that going? When are you returning to work, or are you SAH? I don't really get a ton from pumping but I'm hopeful it's helping my supply. Though my new realization is that K might just be lazy at working her jaw which could be part of the problem. We're also having her evaluated tomorrow for an upper lip tie and posterior tongue tie. Probably going back to work in December/January. I'll be looking for a new job so all depends on what I find.
GTKY: what is one feature of your dream home that your current home lacks? Omg so many things lol. Giant bathrooms, a massive walk in closet, a mud room, and second floor laundry in a big laundry room.

How old is LO? 1 month
How's everything going? Eh. We had a weight check this morning and she is down 3 ounces from her 2 week appointment. I now have to nurse, then offer bottle and pump after she's done nursing. So my already long feeds are going to be even longer.
Questions/concerns/cute stories to share?
0-1mo: Is this your first experience BF? Yes and no. I tried with my son, but didn't produce much. (At one month old he was almost 1 full pound under birth weight. We had an idiot pediatrician at the time.) so because of that I ended up switching to formula. What's one reason why you want to BF?
1-3mo: How do nights look at your house? She gives me a really good stretch in the beginning. Usually start the last evening feeding around 8:30-9 and she hasn't been waking until at least 1:30 (some days not until 3) then it's every 2.5-3 hours.
If you're pumping, how is that going? When are you returning to work, or are you SAH? Just started pumping again. I was pumping when I supplemented with formula, but then went to Just breastfeeding and stopped pumping (unless she didn't nurse one side for very long, but I never got a whole lot then). But now it looks like I'll be back to pumping to make sure my supply stays up.
GTKY: what is one feature of your dream home that your current home lacks? Our kitchen sucks. I'd redo that. Also our bathrooms. ETA: I'm meeting with a LC tomorrow morning to see if she can help figure out what's going on.

gimmesugar be sure bottles are being pace fed. With the possible exception of growth spurts, most breastfed babies top out at 3.5oz per bottle. (Not always true of exclusive breastmilk bottle fed babies.) yourpaceormine keep us updated!

Well P only took in 0.4oz.. yep you read that right, not even half an ounce! That is both sides combined. The LC taught me how to properly do compressions while P is latched to push more milk down. I know I have the milk supply because when I was pumping before I was getting about an ounce (or a little more) each side. So I continue in with nursing, bottle feeding and then pumping (adding compressions here as well.) We go back on Wednesday. She also suspects P has tongue tie, but she can't officially diagnosis that. I will bring that up to her pediatrician on Friday and see what he says. If he doesn't know/shrugs it off I'll find a pediatric dentist and take her in.

@yourpaceormind did the LC suspect the nipple shield was inhibiting transfer? Or just the possible tie? FX if there is a tie, revising it fixes both latch and transfer.

Went back in for a weight check today. Tuesday she was 7lb 8.8oz, today she is 8lb 2.2oz. He was happy with her gain, but didn't say anything about reducing the bottle feeding. I really don't enjoy nursing both sides (usually 30-40mins, she falls asleep and is just slow), bottle feeding 15ish minutes) then another 20 minutes pumping. The LC didn't say much about the shield being an issue. Right now she thinks the shield is really the only way P will latch. The pediatrician didn't see the possible tongue tie the LC saw, but still gave me a referral to have her evaluated. I'm really hoping they say yes that is the problem and it can be fixed. I take her in on Monday for the evaluation. We go back to the LC on Wednesday.

Has anyone used the Medela Calma? Worth it, waste of time, too frustrating for baby?? I have one from my son (that we never ended up using.)

yourpaceormine I'd be tempted to reduce nursing time especially since she is transferring so little and you are supplementing anyway, to help make feedings more manageable for you. My LO was also slow and sleepy at the breast and not transferring much and the LC had me on a routine of nursing for 10 minutes on each side, but stimulating him and trying to keep him awake and actively suckling as much as possible, bottle feeding, then pumping. Maybe you can ask the LC about it next visit. Good luck with the tongue tie evaluation.
