I have a 2019 MDX that I love, love, love. Mine doesn’t have captains chairs, but they do have a higher level trim package that has them. However, while I do love it, the third row is very, very small. We only have two kids, so we don’t need it regularly. But, I think it was the smallest of any of the three row SUVs we test drove, if that’s really important to you. But it’s super comfortable, a dream to drive and I love the tech that all came even in the base trim. And adaptive cruise control is the bomb.

I might be unloading my minivan on Saturday and I am elated.
I’m downsizing though, looking at a VW Tiguan with a third row. We don’t need both kids in the car often for more than 15-20 minutes at a time, and I want something more fuel/environmentally efficient.

We have a Traverse and I love it. It has everything you're looking for. So I vote Traverse.

If I didn’t want to be higher off the ground (it’s a me thing) I would get a Traverse.

I was a Toyota loyalist. Sat in my friends Highlander and my knees were mashing my boobs to my neck. I'm not tall. At the time I purchased the Traverse had the most leg room in the 3rd row. We're a taller family minus me so I need it. I drove uber and put adults there all the time and they were shocked at the room. We have captains chairs in 2nd row. I don't feel I have no trunk space with the seats up. 🤷🏻♀️ I was waiting for you boo

I will say the other day when the kids were loudly talking to each other in the back of my truck, we joked the extra space between us and a potential third row in a yukon XL was sounding pretty nice about then.

Tthe Traverse is basically the Enclave and Acadia. If money is no object then get the Enclave.
It's body is larger than 4runner. 4runner sits up higher.
Those Rav 4 and CRVs and the other little ones are on car chassis and not really SUVs. Just a FYI.

I am in the market for a new vehicle. We are hoping to buy in July-ish, but am not in a rush. I want something with 3 rows, but it has to have captains chairs in row 2. Also key is independent air vents in the back. My CX-7 doesn’t have any air in the back at all (wtf?) and it’s definitely a deal breaker. I’m open to anything, any brand. Not tied to luxury or otherwise, but I’m somewhat hard on my cars (kid, 2 dogs, lots of outdoorsy activities and high miles) and I would like to pull a boat eventually. Open to new or used. My family gets friends and family with both Chrysler brand and GMC brand vehicles, which is a plus, but isn’t required. I have my eye on the Kia Telluride, but can be wildly swayed in any direction. I also have eyed up a Telluride.

Another vote for Ascent. We have captains chairs and have baby RF in one and DD (9) in the other, and DS1 in a booster in the 3rd row. The 60lb dog rides in the 3rd row with him. It’s not as roomy, cargo-wise as the Atlas but feels smaller to drive/easier to manoeuvre IMO. I fit regular grocery runs in the back with the 3rd row up, and we usually put the 60% of the bench down for Costco runs. DS can still get in and out no problem.
Minor cons: no speakers in the 3rd row so DS is forever asking for the music to be louder. And the bench seat belts are kind of wonkily spaced to account for the 60/40 split so his booster (which is a massive Britax, granted) only fits in the one spot back there.
But overall love it, highly recommend. Really good on gas too for its size.

Now I will have to check. I do know there are USB ports back there.

I really love it, even though mine is a 2014 so the technology in it is basic at this point. I test drove a 2020 a few months ago and it was much better. We have 2 kids and until somewhat recently had 2 dogs (one was 150lbs) and we could fit the dogs and all our stuff in it for a long weekend away with no space issues.

When we looked at the Traverse, the sales guy made it a point to tell us that the Traverse actually has more cubic footage of space than a Tahoe, even though the Tahoe looks a bit bigger and is more expensive. This could have changed if they made the Tahoe bigger recently, but I thought it was interesting. ETA: cubic footage, not square footage. Whatever, same thing, kinda. Yes I remember this specifically as well.

I love our Durango. We have a 2017. My tall brothers sat in the third row during an hour long car drive and weren't uncomfortable. The trunk space is on the smaller side but the seats lay down super easily and you can put one down and leave the other up if you want. On vacations when we have more luggage we have 2 kids in the middle and one in the 3rd row with the second third row seat down for more space. Its usually fine.
I see a lot of Traverse love here but I hated it when we test drove it. I feel like it felt like it had less space somehow. Or maybe it's because I enjoyed feeling higher up like in the Durango? It was in 2017 though so maybe newer models are different

This is a timely thread as we're mulling over the idea of trading in our Odyssey for an SUV. We bought the van planning on having 2 kids, had just one (and done) and we don't need a van. DH wants a third row SUV and I don't. Wouldn't mind staying with Honda, since we'd be trading in our van (and still owe on it, so I figured it would be easier to deal with Honda overall). Debating between the Pilot and the Passport.

I'm almost positive we have speakers but I don't think there are outlets in the back of mine. I hope there are, DD1 sits in the third row and it's be nice for her to have a charger for her tablet back there

Haven't read all the comments but we bought a Hyundai Palisade a couple of weeks ago. It's a new model for 2020. We debated between the Acura MDX (I didn't like how it drove and the inside seemed dated), Toyota Highlander, and the Palisade. We picked the Palisade because I liked the interior and it had more storage vs. the Highlander. I've read a few articles which compare the Palisade to the Telluride - think Hyundai created the Palisade specifically to compete with the Telluride. The Palisade can have captain's chairs in the second row and it has air vents in the second row.

The Tahoe/Yukon sits on the truck chassis (like the same one as the Sierra) so the third row is higher up than in the ones that sit on the regular SUV chassis. The third row in my Yukon is definitely more comfortable for kids than adults, but we also didn't purchase the car with the thought that we would regularly be hauling adults around in the third row. One of my main things I was looking for is the ride height. I want to be one of the highest vehicles on the road (aside from trucks and those people that modify their cars into spaceships). The Tahoe/Yukon sits 6ish inches above the Traverse but I absolutely believe the Traverse has more interior headroom in the third row. Yes you understand me.

Now we have only had it for 2 weeks and it's our first SUV but I really like the interior and the safety features. And it's nice to drive. I'm not a huge fan of the button gear shift but it did create a big storage space between the driver and passenger seat which I thought was key since we will use it all the time. And this may be trivial but I really like the space beneath the console between the driver and passenger seat - gives me a place to put my purse when DH and I are both in the car. ETA: Saw your comment about the seat being narrow, DH is 5'11, 220 lbs and has no issues with the seat/space in the driver's seat.
