I have a Ford Explorer with 2nd row captain chairs. There isn't a ton of trunk space if you need the 3rd row seating, which we do, but folded down there is a lot of space. We got the upgraded tow package and can haul our boat no problems. Is the 3rd row a 2/3 split? Edit: NVM I saw that you said explorer. I want the expedition for more cargo space. Yeah, the third row is only two seats. I had my eye on the expedition too, but woof to the price. We run a truck too so if we need the cargo space we just use it.

I just checked and they made both the Tahoe and Yukon larger in 2021. Presumably this is the case with the Escalade as well. I will have to check this out! I had resigned myself to a minivan when this third kid comes along because I’ll need all 3 rows and trunk space and didn’t want the XL. Very very interesting. Yeah, third kid is the final kick we needed to get a giant SUV. Three kids, 100lbs dog, active lifestyle, drive back and forth four hours round trip to visit parents on the reg. We need the kid space and the trunk space and we have zero intentions of ever owning a mini van.

VW Atlas. I have a 2019 with captain chairs and I love it. It has so much legroom and headroom too.

A few years ago we went to a dealership for a 3 row SUV and left with a minivan. 🤪

I have the smaller version of this in the Tiguan, but also love it equally!
They have the cross sport now that's 2 rows!

I love my Traverse for the space. If I had more money I'd probably get a Yukon. I love that you get all the space without it being a minivan.

I love my Toyota Highlander. We have captain's chairs in the 2nd row and a tow package. I love my highlander too but I don’t think it has great trunk space with the 3rd row up. We don’t have captains chairs though because I needed the bench seat to fit 3 car seats across.

I see people have mentioned the Ascent, but please let me know if you would like my dissertation on why I love it so much. After 2 years I still love it so much. I will say, it may not have the space in the back you would want. With 2 kids, you can easily just keep the third row up most of the time. There is also the option to just keep 1 of the 3 seats up, if you need it.

When we looked at the Traverse, the sales guy made it a point to tell us that the Traverse actually has more cubic footage of space than a Tahoe, even though the Tahoe looks a bit bigger and is more expensive. This could have changed if they made the Tahoe bigger recently, but I thought it was interesting.
ETA: cubic footage, not square footage. Whatever, same thing, kinda.

You know the answer is minivan. Namaste. We had a pilot for two years. Not enough storage at all with the third row up, which we need with all the kids. We just went back to the minivan and couldn't be happier.

I turned in my explorer in March. It had the second row captains chairs. For space it was great. And I did like it. But a fully loaded sport was costly enough that when my lease was up, I upgraded to a different brand that I had been wanting for a while bc it was the same price. Even with A plan pricing, the cost was up there. An expedition is around 800/900 if you put no money down. Ford is getting cocky and they are going to price themselves right out of business.

I’m currently shopping and researching these as well. I test drove the Traverse and Hyundai Palisade last weekend. My thoughts: -I liked the Palisade a lot but my husband thought the drivers seat was narrow (he’s 6’2” -the trunk space was better in the Traverse -I liked how the Hyundai drove better -both sat a bit lower to the ground than I expected.
Long story short, I’m now back to a Durango. We had leased one before and now that’s what I want again. I like being high off the road and it’s available with captains seats. I’m willing to give up a bit of trunk space. Ideally I’d get a big ass Tahoe but it’s too expensive for me.

I was a Toyota loyalist. Sat in my friends Highlander and my knees were mashing my boobs to my neck. I'm not tall.
At the time I purchased the Traverse had the most leg room in the 3rd row. We're a taller family minus me so I need it. I drove uber and put adults there all the time and they were shocked at the room.
We have captains chairs in 2nd row. I don't feel I have no trunk space with the seats up. 🤷🏻♀️

We have the Subaru Ascent and I LOVE it. We looked at that and the VW Atlas (I actually like the way it looks better and like how the 2nd row seat folds down better) but decided on the Subaru. Air vents everywhere, cup holders everywhere and plenty of space for adults in the 3rd row. We have car seats in the captain chairs and even though I didn't originally want captain chairs it was the only option with how the seats fold down. In the end I'm really glad we have them and I probably wouldn't go back now.

Yeah, third kid is the final kick we needed to get a giant SUV. Three kids, 100lbs dog, active lifestyle, drive back and forth four hours round trip to visit parents on the reg. We need the kid space and the trunk space and we have zero intentions of ever owning a mini van. My original thought was the suburban/expedition was a bit too big for us. We randomly had one as a rental car and it barely fit in our garage. I’m not necessarily opposed to the minivan life, I’m just used to SUVs. Something’s definitely going to have to give, we take two cars everywhere due to dogs and stuff and it’s getting old. I think we’re also just going to lean into the family travel life and get one of those roof storage things. We have a tow hitch on both our Subarus and we have a regular giant trailer and one of those shortie ones with no wheels, it just has an axel that hooks into the hitch. It's the perfect size to hold two-four totes.

My Subaru Ascent doesn’t get here until middle of this month, but I did an extended test drive and I LOVE it. It has the independent air vents/control, captain chairs, and is pretty spacious without feeling like you’re driving a huge vehicle. If you’re wanting brand new, Subaru had halted production due to Covid, so there are delays. Yay, you are joining the Ascent club. I got mine end of February and love it. OP I think it is a good choice for your purpose. The higher models have a 5000 lbs towing capacity and the 3rd row is comfortable for me (small adults). My rogue also didn't have air vents in the back which was a problem. The Atlas is nice too but wasn't as comfortable for me to drive. Personally I didn't want to get the really big SUVs. I think that is them major choice you need to make.
