Oh my God I can't stop crying. Ugh. That ending. I just finished. That was amazing. I can't wait to watch it again. Also, I didn't realize until the credits that Laurens and Philip Hamilton were played by the same person. Poor guy died twice in one play. As well as Lafayette/Jefferson Mulligan/Monroe Hercules is my favorite supporting cast. His facial expressions and presence were terrific

Just watched it for the first time and it definitely lived up to the hype!i only started listening to the music within the past year or so based on Pandora suggestions. I finally understand its quiet uptown now. 😭 My nine year old son only came back in the living room for King George. He was amazing. Burn and Dear Theodosia were my favorites from the soundtrack with no context of the musical. I still love them.

Lafayette/Jefferson and Burr were my favorite.

Also, I don't know what magic Disney pulled to not have major issues with streaming.

I’m prepared to get flamed, but what do people like about Hamilton exactly? I appreciate the skill that went into it and the actors were great but these were all historically shitty people. The founding of America is a horrible story for Black and Indigenous folks. Hamilton purchased slaves and wasn’t an abolitionist. I cringed through the first 20 minutes then gave it another 10 and turned it off
Is it more of what I saw or will it surprise me? I sincerely don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade and I appreciate all of your passion for it, I just want to ‘get it’. I understand some of the wow factor but can’t get past the historical facts.
Eta: Just took in the title of the thread and realized this is supposed to be a positive space and that I’m an asshole now. That’s not my intention. Should I DD?

babybean You are not an asshole and you should not dd. Your voice is important. For me, one of the biggest draws of Hamilton (the musical) has always been how whitewashed our history is. So even having POC in these roles is subversive, as is using hip-hop and rap for a Broadway show which is also almost exclusively white. LMM's lyricism is really good. But you're right all of these people were problematic and that's not fully addressed. While Hamilton never personally owned slaves, he fully and willingly participated in the system and chose to further his own interests instead of the interests of the enslaved. He absolutely was an elitist. This is definitely more covered in the book, but even from the musical it is evident Hamilton will always choose what he thinks will escalate his status over others. Also the show does still miss black and brown voices. The room where it happened, states no one else was in the room- but we all know damn well there were slaves or servants and they were 99% likely to be black/brown. The musical may not be for you. And that's okay. It certainly does not address many horrible issues of the founding. It is a look at Hamilton, whose individual story is fascinating for manyu, but still problematic. I will just say that most of the moving moments for me revolve around Phillipa Soo as a mother and wife. So there are parts that while the plot is moved by historical facts, the intense emotion i feel is LMM's music being a parent.

And to be clear the title for this wasn't to indicate a no negativity in the content- it was just pulling Hamilton chat out of the regular threads for those who might not care about it. So really no worries about bringing up what is an important conversation.

babybean I am watching for the first time (2/3rds the way through) and I am having a lot of the same thoughts as you. Im not loving it and having a lot of feelings about these people’s true histories. Like when TJ says they plant things in VA (which is at least called out later). I think it was supposed to be funny? I will say the actor that plays Aron Burr is A+ though.

It's the format of the "debate". Or do you mean when TJ actually says that line?

Or do you mean when TJ actually says that line? When TJ says it I don't think that was the intent. I also don't recall the reaction on stage- But also I'd fully expect a slave owner to take credit for the work of his slaves. Giving the credit in that conversation raises their humanity- a thing that TJ def had no interest in doing.

I wrote that at 2 am and have been dealing with a lot of racist stuff lately so thought I was maybe being overly sensitive. I appreciate the art and effort that went into it. I also realize holding people to the standards of today’s world isn’t always fair. (treating people as human beings shouldn’t be a revolutionary idea, but you know what I mean.) I’ve read various accounts of him having bought and sold slaves for his in laws, but that he never had slaves of his own. Its not at all shocking knowing someone was trying to advance their position in the world at the cost of others, especially hundreds of years ago.

Ok, King George is fucking hysterical. He's definitely the comic relief of the musical. I ❤️ Jonathan Groff so much.

Thanks for this. I agree with every critique here, and it’s worded much better than I could ever attempt lol. Like many other things, this is complex and layered.

blurnette989 speaks for me, as per. I love that everyone is played by a POC. The only white person is the villain (for the sake of the musical), and the music is a completely different genre than has ever been done. I've been seeing musicals for 25 years and it was so refreshing. I also felt that it was never lost how self absorbed and driven to a fault AH was, so he was definitely not my favorite character. At the end (and when I was drunk so I have to rewatch to see if it still translates that way to me 🤣) I felt like the title Hamilton actually captures the story of Alexander AND Eliza. That was my thought that I wasn't sure if I would be able to articulate last night...I feel it was about her life in a more subtle way. She was the true hero. Kind of like Wizard of Oz... Dorothy wasn't the hero, Toto was. I wrote a whole college paper on it. Edit: maybe that is obvious to everyone else and I just made the connection.

Update: watched it, loved it, need to watch it again without DD talking incessantly.
“That guy came back to life again!” “What are they arguing about?” “Why are they all handing those papers around?” “Where is George Washington’s hair?” “Why is the narrator talking to everyone?” “How does that girl just start crying like that?” “Why is he singing if he’s dying?” “Are they drinking beer?” “Where’s the Statue of Liberty?”
Girl.

Maybe I'm just projecting my knowledge of the actual people into the characters but I don't think anyone outside of Eliza comes out of this looking very good. Hamilton himself is definitely an asshole in the musical. But even though it's not as honest a look at history as we would like it to be, I think what LMM found compelling about the story was that we're all taught and conditioned to lionize the founders but they were actually just people. Intelligent, brave, but complex and often pretty shitty people.

Don't get me wrong, he was an asshole too but I understand why he shot Hamilton now. 😂
