I'm struggling with what I realistically need for this kid. I know I'll figure it out but I need to know what I should have when I get home from the hospital. I currently have: -NB sized: -5 kimono tops -3 onesies -2 sleepers
-0-3 Months sized: -10 onesies -2 sleepers -2 rompers -1 shirt/pants combo
-I have about 7 pairs of 0-6 sized socks.
What else do I need? I have other stuff in other sizes but this is what I have for baby right now. What do you have? What do I need? How many of everything do you have?

We wound up going to BRU with a 4 day old, because I was so scared to buy NB sized stuff and have it be too small. Well, my daughter wound up being in NB clothes until she was close to 2 months old. Just something to keep in mind. What you currently have in the 0-3mo range is certainly enough to start out until you see what size your baby really is. Are you using swaddle sacks for sleeping? If so, a onesie + swaddle sack is sufficient. If not, I'd definitely add a few more sleepers. Seriously, though, zippered sleep n' plays are lyfe with a NB. We have an extra large space saver bag full of 0-3 month clothes right now, but that is because my kid was in 0-3mo for foreverrrr and these are all hand me downs.
Honestly, I over purchased a lot in preparation, looking back. I thought kimonos were going to be our go-to, and she wore them maybe twice. I bought a lot of gowns, but they wound up not being the best option for us. I got 6 packs of long sleeve onesies, along with random pants, and reality was that pre-put-together outfits wound up being the easiest and most worn items in those two sizes. You get the idea, but basically I think it will be trial/error in terms of what you find works best for your kid, your situation, and your lifestyle (how often you do laundry, how you put together outfits, etc.). What you have right now will certainly be enough to help you figure out your personal preference, and at that point it just becomes a matter of how much money you want to throw at tiny clothes.

king26, I would stock up on a few more sleepers in the NB size; what you have 0-3 months definitely seems like enough for the time being. DS1 was only in NB size for about 2-3 weeks, but he lived in sleepers and it was nice to not have to worry about doing laundry all the time. There's also some good sales happening right now. I think with DS1 I had 7 of each (sleepers onesies, pants, etc) so I could do laundry only twice a week and factor in a blowout or two every day. Not sure if you have any mittens but those were helpful because DS would constantly scratch his face, esp while he slept.

I would probably do more 0-3m sleepers and rompers. Babies (IME) spit up a lot and between that and blowouts...I could go through 3-4 sleepers in a day. I'm not sure if you have consignment sales around you or consignment stores but that is a great place to shop if you don't want to spend a ton of money.
We were given a copious amount of baby clothes, between that and what I've purchased, we have about 5 NB sleepers, 3 NB dresses/outfits. ~15 3m sleepers, more 3m dresses than I can count and probably 10-15 3m outfits of onesies and leggings. Essentially I'm not planning on having to do baby laundry the first few weeks after baby comes which works perfectly with my CS recovery.

king26, th other ladies have already given good advice, plus I'm a FTM myself so what do I know lol ;-) The only thing that is "missing" from your list that I do have are some baby hats. My mom and sister swear by them, now of course our babies get born in August so it may be nice and warm but I like to have them for chillier days anyway. Like unicornsparkles I feel like I am almost literally swimming in babycloths and I haven't even bought that much myself! My cousin gave me a HUGE huge bag of newborn and 0-3 stuff. I swear she must have had 100 onesies herself lol (okay maybe that's an exageration but I don't think she needed to do laundry but twice a month LOL even with twice daily changes or more) and my sister also gave me some of my niece&newphews stuff. And of course there's been some outfits given to us by friends as well, and some things we've bought ourselves.. I'd have to count what I actually have (some is already washed and ready here some is still at my mums as she's doing my baby laundry for me since I've been out of commission due to the ankle these past weeks) but am almost scared to do so LOL!

I was talking to my mom last night and she was laughing saying that she and my dad were saying that my baby probably has a different onesie for every day of the year because of everything she's been buying. I was like you would think but after I sorted, washed, and put everything away I need a lot more 0-3 month stuff. I have a ton of stuff for 6 months-12 months but I don't have much for the first few months. She seemed really surprised by this. My plan is to buy more onesies, sleepers, and pants 0-3 months and 3-6 months

This is actually my goal for today since I'm off work. I have 5 or 6 boxes of clothes to sort through and wash (all graciously handed down from friends). I want to make sure I have enough NB and 0-3M stuff.

A little perspective on how many baby girl clothes we were given-- I had enough to send three of my D14 friends (all having little girls and a boy happyfeet9 😉) baby girl clothes and still have ample for our baby. I was super blessed & surprised by what all we were given!

I would probably get a few more NB onesies/sleepers. DD was 8lbs 7oz when she was born and still wore NB size for over a month. She lived in onesies/sleepers for like 6 months; I never did the kimono tops and couldn't stand the gowns. I am trying to not go overboard this time b/c I bought a ton of stuff with DD and she didn't end up wearing a lot of it. I already do laundry a ton so I am going to factor that into how many baby clothes I need. If you plan on doing laundry frequently then you can probably get away with less but if not then you should probably buy a bit more. I will warn you that we did end up throwing several outfits away b/c of diaper explosions that we just didn't want to clean so it is always good to have extras :-)

Oh, and I used her socks as mittens.

Everyone else has already given good advice. With my daughter, I thought gowns were the go-to clothing item and I was so wrong. Hate those things! We ended up using a lot of onesies, short and long sleeve. She was swaddled most of the time, so we didn't really use pants too often but we did use hats. Even though it's going to be summer, we will be keeping the house pretty cool because breastfeeding makes me run hot, so I'll dress him for that. Anyway, I'd definitely get some more onesies, sleepers, socks, and mittens in NB. You'll probably need more in the 0-3 month, but you can wait to see what you end up using the most. For sleepers, definitely go with the zip up ones. Ain't nobody got time for buttons! Oh, and I also liked having a couple cuter going out outfits in the 0-3 month size.
