Delta is a lot more contagious and cause a higher viral load.
Younger people are getting sicker quicker.
County case rates per 100k. When it’s between 50-100, transmission is substantial. Over 100 is high. See chart.
Hospitalizations are going up again. 393 in July 23. August 5 is 857 people in hospital.

Dr V is talking about delta variant. Can cause inflammation of blood vessels. Exponential growth across the country. 3 key things everyone needs to understand-more contagious (50% more than alpha and alpha was 50% more than the one before it.). Delta causes someone to infect 5-8 people. 2) Delta is more dangerous. Data shows it’s a higher likelihood of needing to be hospitalized and end up in ICU/die. 3) Mounting evidence that viral loads are higher. Reproducing itself much more quickly once it gets inside a body. Makes people sicker quicker.
Vaccines are very effective against virus still. Delta has created 2 Ohios-protected and vulnerable.

Dr V is talking about layering protections. Delta spreads like wildfire. Vaccines work, blah blah. If you’re on the fence on the vax, this is not the common cold. It can cause children to be very very sick and hospitalized.

We’ve seen increases in vaccinations in 85 counties in July. Largest increases in vax in lowest vaccinated counties in the last week of July.
Today’s press conference is to push vaccines since it’s the most effective tool we have today. Quotes Alex Azar and mentions he worked for 45 saying vaccines are good, blah blah.

Counties can use previously allocated Covid funds as vaccine incentives (gift cards, etc).
State will help with whatever the county thinks will work in their county to increase vaccinations.
Giving examples of vaccine uptake in different areas.

School districts and businesses make decisions based on facts and we wanted to give everyone the facts.
Um, no they don’t if the decision makers are anti maskers. Ugh.

If not for SB22 would you be implementing masks? Individual choice is the most important thing. People know masks and vaccines work and they can make that decision.

Boosters?
Data is very clear all 3 vaccines are very effective against delta. AICP found early indications that people with known immune system issues may need a booster but needs to be looked into. For other healthy people booster isn’t needed now for delta.

Yes it is keeping us out of the hospital but it is not very effective or we wouldn't be catching it.

Dr V. Need to protect kids in our schools with layered protection measures we used last year that worked so well. Masks, distance, etc. it’s our responsibility to protect them.

People need to calculate risk and we need to give them all the facts to do so. ODH put guidance out yesterday about quarantining in school. If kids are all wearing masks, it’s not spreading. We want kids to be in school and not quarantined this year. If everyone is wearing masks, no one needs to quarantine. I missed the rest of the specifics about who needs to quarantine and when. It depends on if the school has comprehensive safety protocols in place (all masks, distancing) and if the kid is vaccinated or not. coronavirus.ohio.gov/static/responsible/covid-19-fact-sheet-k-12-exposure-and-quarantine.pdf

We got the orders yesterday to take down all our distancing signs.

Do you think it’s safe to send unvaccinated kids to school without masks?
DeWine advice is send kids to school with a mask. Dr V agrees. We have clearly outlined that this is not a benign virus. It’s not the common cold. It’s dangerous even for children. MIS-C very often is striking healthy kids. As a parent, weigh risks and do everything on your power to give your kid the safest way to go to school (vaccine or mask).

Unfortunately, there is very little in parents’ power when it comes to kids younger than 12 if districts aren’t requiring masks. I’m so pissed, I can hardly stand it. Everyone was okay requiring kids to wear masks to protect the elderly, but let’s leave it up to personal choice when it comes to the kids themselves (and if they’re under 12, aren’t really old enough to make that choice themself anyway)? Let’s also relax the quarantine guidelines, because it’s all about keeping kids in school. Maybe I’m the idiot, but I feel like I’m living in an alternate universe.

I'm feeling stressed about the lack of a mask mandate for schools. I was at Children's last night and the waiting room was full of sick kids.

Today was the last day of summer camp for DS. He came home with a birthday party invite. It's at their house. I don't know these people so couldn't tell you if they're vaxxed or not.
He went to a party a couple months ago but I feel like we're at a worse spot now so I think I'm going to make him skip it. How are you guys handling things like this? I, of course, am second guessing every little thing right now.

It was at an event center, but then they went back to the girl's house for lunch and cake. It was her and 3 other girls.
She has gone swimming with a friend a couple times this summer, but it is outdoors.
I honestly don't know what is the right thing to do .

NamasteBirches, I’d probably have him skip it. DS is 16 and vaxxed. He is on the cross country team. In the before times, there would be a team pasta dinner at a different house every week and the kids would hang out for a few hours. They’re doing it again this year. AYFKM? They are asking parents to sign up. I refuse to host this year given the fact that our town is very anti-mask, anti-vax and I won’t have 20 unvaccinated teenagers in my house for hours. I will probably let DS go since he’s vaxxed. The email said that everyone should encourage their kids to go because the parents work hard for the dinners. 🙄🙄🙄

Yesterday was the first day of school for my kids. My 3rd grader said that only one kid in her classroom was not masked and my first grader said everyone started with masks but at least two took masks off later in the day. I still feel so conflicted. My kids basically didn’t see any other children since March 2020, with the exception of one week of theatre camp this summer (the director promised me that all students would be masked and meals were outdoors). I had asked my daughter if she made any friends or talked to anyone at school and she said no. She didn’t sit with anyone on the bus or at lunch or talk to anyone at recess. She said everyone else was in a friend group and she didn’t really know anyone. She is my sensitive, overthinking, anxious child, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that next week is better.

School starts here Monday. I started the enrollment process for OCA for DD, but I should probably finish that. I need to round up some paperwork. Our schools issued an update today strongly encouraging masks but emphasizing that they're not required. Cool cool. More emphasis should have been put on the whole not needing to quarentine if you are masked, IMO. We have a very vocal cohort against masks that outnumber the vocal pro-mask people. Even our pediatrician said she wasn't sure what the right answer is, which is getting some side eye from me.
DS is a senior, vaxxed, and has 4 in person classes plus an online college class. He will also wear a mask so I'm not very worried about him getting sick but socially I'm sure it'll be a mess, and he's not rich in the friend department and I doubt this will help.
And to top it off MH leaves Sun to start a PhD program, which is exciting and great but also FML. I feel overwhelmed.

When we planned it everything was in a different place, but all of the adults are vaxxed and we will do our best to be outside or masked for the kids. It isn't a big party, mostly neighbor kids but I'm feeling nervous about having it. I strongly considered cancelling it.

I'm having DS skip it. He hasn't even asked again about it so maybe he'll just forget about it.
I saw this morning that basically all of Ohio is red/high transmission. I wonder if schools are going to change their minds about masks.

Our county health dept issued a statement that said they wanted to make things clear and listed that masks are required on buses per the federal mandate, they strongly recommend masks for everyone at school but realize SB22 greatly limited the Governor and health departments to issue mandates, the health dept still has the legal right to isolate and quarantine people. I sense that they’re royally pissed off at the state of things. And we’re red now.
Also, the local paper had an article with a statement: “Assistant xxxxxx County Prosecutor Xxxxxx issued a legal opinion to Xxxxxx County schools on Friday afternoon that states the federal order is authorized by federal law and applies to states. She wrote that Ohio’s definition of “public transportation” does not negate the federal order’s inclusion of school buses in its mandate.
Xxxx County Health Commissioner Xxxxxxx said his department also is “highly recommending” that school districts follow the federal order.”
I know for sure my district will still not comply with the bus mandate or require masks. It’s full of angry misguided ignorant assholes.
DH and I talked last night and will require DS to wear a mask at school even though he’s vaccinated. I just hope he complies. And now that I’m WFH again, I’ll just drive him to school.
I have an appointment with my rheumatologist Tuesday and will ask him if I should get the 3rd shot.

Our district doubled down yesterday that they're not requiring masks unless they're mandated, but did reiterate that you don't have to quarentine if you're exposed if you wear a mask so 🤷♀️
School starts Mon and I just finished uploading all the documentation for OCA for DD. I've heard through the grapevine the principal at her school wishes the district would require masks, too bad he'snot one of the decision makers. DS will only be in person for 4 classes at the HS so hopefully that will be fine. I'm sure very few kids will be masked.
