Random PSA for those in central OH—the cicadas are soooo bad around the zoo and Zoombezi bay. It was insane. One landed on DS1’s upper lip, and I think we’re all traumatized now. 0/10, do not recommend. I would have screamed and run around like a little girl! When we had them over this way a couple years ago we basically stayed in the house until they were gone. They are so creepy. I hope DS is ok!

One landed on MH at Costco and he promptly flicked it into the car 😒 I just know that thing is going to reappear when I’m driving on the freeway or something bc we haven’t found it yet.

Has anyone been keeping up with the numbers? I glance at them when my health dept posts them on Facebook everyday. Friday’s cases were 347 (508 is the 21 day avg); 59 hospitalizations (64); 8 ICU (8); 70 deaths (18). Deaths are only updated twice a week. Positivity rate is 1.7%.

Also, how is everyone dealing with family who aren't vaccinated? Our family live in a different state so this isn't a frequent issue but thinking ahead, are you congregating with unvaccinated family?
Not that my family has said anything about coming out but I was just thinking about this the other day.

They haven’t taken Covid seriously and have 3 little kids. They’ve gotten me sick on multiple occasions pre-Covid (coming to xmas less than 24 hours after 4 of them had fevers and flu). So I don’t trust them. We went to a retirement party outside Saturday for DH’s secretary and someone came at us for a hug but thankfully asked first if it was okay. I assumed she had been vaxed like all the other school employees, so I happily said “sure if you’re vaccinated.” And she said she wasn’t and was very respectful of our space. They know of my health issues though. So DH’s coworkers are more considerate than my own family.

I've had 2 missed calls from a 614 area code number that I don't recognize today. If I won a million dollars, surely they would be leaving a message, right? Should I answer it next time? 🤣

Probably another call about extending my car's warranty even though the only vehicle registered in my name is my 2014 dirt bike. 😝

Update- it was suddenlink wanting to know why my recent installation (which was completed in like 5 minutes on friday) was not completed. I swear, that company couldn't find their own ass even if you handed them a map.

My parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, and uncles all have, even the Trump supporting ones. They have terrible political opinions but still believe in science, I guess? Many are first responders or teachers, so they've been vaxxed for a while. The lone exception is my BIL; my sister (his wife) had COVID twice, and then their kids had it, but he never showed symptoms at any of those points, so I think he's pretty confident in not getting it from anyone else (not that it excuses it, just explaining why he might not think it's important to get vaxxed). Personally, I think he probably had it at some point and was asymptomatic. We've been around him a couple of times in outdoor settings. My idiot XH and his idiot SO were not vaccinated, and there wasn't a damn thing I could do about it, unfortunately. But they both recently got their first shots when both of their employers started allowing vaccinated employees to unmask. My nephews (who have both recently had COVID) and my kids are the only people in my family too young to be vaccinated.

I feel like they congregate with many unvaxxed people so I'm just not sure about it since DS obviously isn't vaxxed yet.

He also has an immunocompromised child so he just doesn't make sense to me. Last I heard my dad had the option but was on the fence bc of "some people dying." They're all republican.

I asked my mom last night if she got the vaccine (she's currently in Italy) & it's a no. Says she "has concerns with these rushed vaccines." So yup, my whole side is unvaxxed.

How is everyone feeling about school? Are your schools still planning on requiring masks?
I'm having a lot of anxiety about my younger kids because it doesn't look like vaccine approval for under 12s will be here in time to be vaxxed for school (starts Aug 16 here). Our schools aren't requiring masks. I'm much less concerned about DS(17) because he's vaxxed and I know he'll wear a mask at school, but what about my 8 and 3yo? Holding off on preschool seems like an easy choice, but we can't exactly do that with 3rd grade, and I think DD would easily give in to peer pressure to take off a mask but them have anxiety about getting sick.
I feel so lost

So far the kids have asked to homeschool again. The options are that or public school (the private school we did use has changed leadership and it is not what it was) and we have always sworn our kids would not go to the school district we are in. So I think we'll be homeschooling for a while. Hoping to move to a different district before the kids hit high school.

Our schools have yet to say what's going on next year. DS is in a day camp at his school & they are still requiring masks so I kind of hope that remains the same. Seems like they're waiting it out to announce anything.
I would be lying if I said I didn't have anxiety about absolutely everything right now.

Our schools are already not requiring masks for summer school. However, I am sending DS back in the fall as I love his school and program. I’m also very active there and he will wear a mask regardless. He will be in 8th/9th grade and is hitting the limit for what I can handle with homeschool. We do have a virtual option and I’ve had that in my back pocket just in case. I also have a baby due this summer and so I feel like my opinion changes day by day.
We aren’t sure what will happen with SS. His mom hasn’t had a preference yet and we don’t have to make a decision for homeschool, virtual or in person until August 1. He’s not at the same school as DS and his district is also not requiring masks already for their summer school program.
I will be watching my nephew (3 in October) this year again. I’ve also got a long list of tutoring families that want support in the summer/fall. I’ll be working with those kiddos one on one until I take a short maternity leave.

So far we haven't had any official announcements, but my youngest is doing a mini program to prep them for their preK in the fall and in the enrollment email it stated masks are required and linked to the student/family health and safety guidelines. So I suspect this will continue into the fall, with the district possibility not making a big announcement but more of, hey this is continuing from last year until we tell you otherwise.

Our school district went unmasked June 2nd. And will not offer virtual. They keep pointing out the low numbers from the past school year- when less than 50% of students were in person, masks were worn, desk shields used, and the kids only left their desks for 2 bathroom breaks and 1 socially distant no equipment recess.
I'm so torn on what to do this year with my soon to be 1st grader. We both surprisingly loved homeschooling and I wfh so we could continue but it was never our plan and H and I are hesitant. I very much doubt we'd homeschool through graduation so she'll end up in public at some point. This year she wouldn't be "the new kid." But I'd have to trust that the rest of the families in our district are making good decisions and I'm just not there.

We were virtual all year by choice, but I heard from other parents the schools tried to make lunch 14 min so they wouldn't have to do contact tracing 🤦♀️ Thus my conundrum because I don't trust the schools or other families

Then public school for high school when they can do PSEO at the community college and earn credits. And because the tracking and transcript for college thing stresses me out. If we move districts then we may send them early but I just don't see us making a move before then.

On the plus side they do say that the vaccine is supposed to interrupt the transmission even if someone who is vaccinated does still get it. Fingers crossed its a mild case for her and the transmission stops with her.
