This was pretty much the weekend of Kobe and his daughter being killed in such a terrible way. My socials are just a wash with it.
Also the Corona Virus is excelerating.
People are mad Billy Eilish won and don't know who she is.
Day 7 of Impeachment starts today.
Maybe we should just go back to bed?

My 7 year old really likes Billie Ellish. I told H last night that I’m too old and don’t get it. I like her. I like that she is clearly comfortable in her own skin and seems like a good role model. But the music - I mean that one song is unique and catchy. The whole album? Not for me dawg.
Alicia Keyes was the star of the show for me - she is an amazing human being

My teen really likes Billie and I've heard the album a few times now. I like it enough and finding it soothing and mellow, but Best album? Nope.

I know what I am about to say is going to be so unpopular (maybe not here, but with the world...) but I will preface it with the fact that the helicopter crash was so incredibly tragic and I can't imagine the immense pain the families who lost so much in it.
But...I am having a really hard time with all of over the top praise for Kobe. Listen, I get it, he was probably the greatest basketball player of all time. Great. It is horrific that he has daughters left behind without a father and a sister. A mother losing a child. But apparently it is super easy to forget that he was accused of rape and admitted to and settled on the sexual encounter? At best he is a cheater, at worst he is a rapist. But somehow because he is great at a particular sport he is now a hero in death? I just can't.
I am keeping room in my heart for all 9 that died and their families that have been ripped apart.

NOVA ladies, not sure if you saw, but it looks like coronavirus has made it to VA, with a possible case at GMU and two suspected in central VA.
I am personally not too concerned about it at this point, but if the person at GMU was living in a dorm, yikes, that could get ugly.

roloma I think people and life are complicated. My guess is that most people are not forgetting or sweeping under the rug the accusation but just not speaking of them now in light of the tragedy. I think the words people say in response to something like this generally are for the living, those suffering, and don’t necessarily need to speak to all aspects of the deceased person’s life. In most of the full articles I’ve read about Kobe it is discussed. My own feelings on his life - mistakes and impact - are not important so I won’t go into that. But I grieve for his family. His daughter who died along side him and his living family. I also grieve for the other families involved. Its an unthinkable loss.

roloma it's okay to feel conflicted about all of it. You can feel sad at this death, and compassion for his family, and still feel what he did was obviously and clearly wrong. You can feel that he made an impact on not just basketball, but the world around him as he grew and matured, and put in the work to be a better human being. He poured himself into women's sports (WNBA and soccer mostly), was a vocal proponent for equal pay. Even his foundation, his work with the special Olympics.....you can feel admiration for this body of work, and also acknowledge the sexual assault case, and acknowledge that the praise makes you uncomfortable. It is a part of his legacy. Every piece of reputable media I have read, hasn't left that part out. At the end of the day he was a flawed human being, who fucked up, and tried to move forward, and did a lot of good outside the basketball court, it's...undeniable, it really is. It doesn't take away from any survivor feeling rightfully triggered, and it does NOT lessen their feelings. This was a tragedy. He died too young, many felt he had a lot left to accomplish. His daughter was 13.....she had so much left to accomplish. And their relationship was something the world saw a lot of because of their shared love for the game, his support of her, and women in basketball in general. But I've seen the ugliest of the ugly from people on social media saying they aren't sad he died. I mean, is that what we are? It's the ugliest of cancel culture and it's not right. He died in a horrific crash with his 13 year old daughter. We can feel a lot of conflicting emotions about this, we are human beings. We are capable of acknowledging and remembering both the good and the bad. I am confident we can do that and be respectful.

I fully admitted my opinion was bound to be unpopular. And it is. But I will stand in my unpopularness.
If that makes me seem like I am canceling him, that's unfortunate, because it isn't the case at all. I'm glad he was able to do as many great things as he was in his life, which was definitely cut short. He has likely helped numerous people in amazing ways. But for me, I just can't overlook the other because he "turned himself around." I acknowledge others feel differently, and they are very much entitled to because that's the great thing, we all get to form our own opinions based on our life experiences. I don't think anyone should change the way they are speaking about him, but again, for me, it is just too much.
My feelings are my feelings for a variety of reasons and it doesn't really do anyone as justice to spew them all over the place. I think the accident was terribly tragic, as I mentioned several times. My words are and were not meant to downplay the tragedy in any way.

Yep. I saw this over the weekend. Ugh. I was wondering if central VA meant Richmond or possibly Charlottesville, like UVA. Most likely the Richmond area. Remember, VCU is one of the biggest hospitals in the state, and there's an airport here. So I'm not surprised. I think most people consider Charlottesville to be in the mountains. I've never really though of it as Central VA.

roloma, no one is coming for you here. I don't feel you are canceling him. I just think that we can acknowledge a lot of complicated facts in such a tragedy. We can acknowledge the very good and the very bad of a human being who is no longer with us. What you're feeling, isn't actually that unpopular. What is unpopular, is something that you are NOT conveying, which is the depths of the grossness of cancel culture that I mentioned, those saying they are happy he is dead or don't care, or that he deserved it. You're not doing that here and we get that. Kobe in my mind is a rare example of someone who actually tried to be a better person after something so ugly. I think it brings up a lot of uncomfortable conversations about what we are willing to accept. He is being remembered more for what he did off the court, and the relationships he had with others. Most of what I am reading, goes so much beyond the court. That's what is making it so hard for so many people I think and why we are seeing this level of remembrance for him.

I also think people, and gosh, myself included, are struggling with just the fragileness of life.
Whether you liked him or not, you probably knew who he was. You knew he was strong, successful, larger than life type of figure.
To see that type of life come crashing down at such a young age, with his daughter with him, it puts a lot into perspective about how short life really is. Those we feel are untouchable, aren't. It's a weird reality to grapple with. One that made me hug my boys tighter last night.

That is a resounding NO I will admit that the area is slowly getting eaten up by NOVA. More and more people are moving to the area, and commuting to NOVA/DC. And I think it's technically close enough mileage wise to be considered a suburb. I grew up there. It will never be NOVA to me.
