what would be the reason coirker would ask me if I had qtips.. aside from the obvious option she is cleaning her ears at work? Well brux uses them to cut up poop in the toilet that is to big to flush so... Lol, that's where my head went too but I didn't want to ruin Kama's life.

Audit went well and I'm glad it's over.
It's pouring down rain so my mom took my boys to the aquarium. They were so excited this morning for that.

Even for a private school, those expectations feel high to me, @klongoria. J knows her letters and all their sounds, and I've heard her count as high as 45 (which she calls forty-fivey) and for 40 she says 30 40 and then she moves on to 41. She does the same for 30 (20 30). I do practice writing with her -- not as a sit down and practice your Fs like they do in her class, but just as a part of whatever she's doing. She's super into crafts, so we try to do something like that every day, and I always ask her to try to label something we've made. She also likes it if I draw an incomplete letter or shape and I have her finish the rest of it.

There was a fffc or uo thread a while back and people were talking about clogging toilets away from your house (like at a friend or bf's house). Brux said she uses a qtip to cut up big pieces if she doesn't think they'll flush. ETA: on parenting

Honestly klong11 they expect way too much and want them to know in advance what they should be teaching them in pre-k. That's ridiculous. It also demonstrates so much of how learning at this age is not just about what they are cognitively capable of, but also the impact of desire, listening skills, and motivation. Maddie didn't care about writing at all until more recently. I think I'd bring up the unrealistic expectations for this age group. This was my thought as well. My last conference did tell us how high he could count and which letters he can write/recognize but that's about it. Like this is where he is and that's exactly what we expect at this age. I think many kids can count to 100 and write some letters/words and recognize the alphabet BUT that should not be a baseline expectation like they're not meeting minimum standards if they don't. And I feel you on the stubborn attitude. Atticus will need to test in to a magnet school and from what I gather he knows what he needs to in order to be admitted but whether or not he's going to be amenable to performing for them that day is anyone's guess. also, this might be an UO, but I know that DH (9 yo) is as smart as he is and as good a reader as he is thanks to not only us reading to him at night, but also his tablet we gave him. We got him the LeapPad 2 when it came out and he would fall asleep with that thing. He was having fun with the games and felt like a little grown-up because he had his own electronic toy to play with. he reads over a 9th grade level, and I am positive his use of the tablet (in addition to other things) had something to do with that. I know this flammable but I'm still kind of pearl clutchy about offering a tablet. I'm thinking of doing it for his 4th birthday though. Not pearl clutchy like I judge when I see kids with them, I know they can learn a lot, but I'm scared that we're never going to tear that thing out of his hands. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Does he know how important that is right now? For them to have someone to read to them? Oh yeah, I don't know if he is just lazy or gives no shits. I'll bring it up and he will start reading to her again, but then it falls to the wayside again. So then, when I go in there to put her to bed I end up reading her 2-3 stories because she hasn't had storytime yet and refuses to go to bed without it. Although lately, she wants "stories out of your mouth"...where there is no book involved, you just tell her a story...but it has to be about her, otherwise it isn't a story she wants to hear. I still read books with her first, though and then after lights out I tell her one "out of my mouth". lol Maggie likes me to repeat "stories." Like, when I told her all about Ben's surgery before it happened, or when we talked about how babies grow in their mommies' tummies and the get born and that's how people are made, or something. She says, "Mommy, talk about babies again." So cute.

My kid does not count to 100. I feel like Montessori schools focus on different things. He named all the planets and continents for us yesterday. MH and I were just sitting there like, "you know that?" I feel like his school does lesson plans for everyone but I just asked him if he could count to 100 and he said, "sorry, mommy, I can't count to 100. Are you sad?" I said no. He said, "I don't count to 100. ... or 50." But he can do simple addition or subtraction and I always get feedback that he's good with numbers. But I don't know that his school works on actual counting because the Montessori class spans from 3-6. He's got another year of Pre-K. Then transitional K. Then K, so he has time. Maybe that's something I should work on with him. :: bangs head on desk at thought of counting with 3yo :: I think this is a good indication that at this age they're really going to gravitate towards whatever interests them. I know Dude knows all this letters but if I sit down and quiz him or something? Nope. He's rather tell me about what kinds of animals are "sea creatures" or try to teach me about topographical features or something. Cadence is smart and she has good retention, I really wouldn't worry. IDK if A can count to 100 but he can give you the lineup to his favorite bands and even knows which drummers played on which albums.

cagoldi, she has a time limit on the "elmo" (youtube). She has learned that when Mom says "dinnertime" it goes away and probably doesn't come back for the rest of the evening. Our main problem is in the morning. As soon as she wakes up she asks for it and it slows the "getting ready" process down way too much. I had to tell mh, "no elmo until after she has her hair done", otherwise there is no way I can get her even into the bathroom to brush her hair I have no idea why we call youtube "elmo". I think it started because she was actually watching sesame street videos on the phone and now it's just what we call it when she wants the phone.

Had Cadence's parent teacher conference this morning. We didn't get any news I didn't already know, but I was hoping she was just being difficult with me and that she actually knew some of the stuff I was concerned about. Not the case. Looks like little girl is going to need to take a cut in her youtube watching and get back into the workbooks. I have thoughts on this topic: I think like others have said that there is too much emphasis on academics in the early years now, this is probably a factor of increased standardized testing and how it plays a role in teachers' jobs and school funding. Anyway, kids develop different things are different rates and "normal" is a huge spectrum. For example, V has excellent academic skills, better than any of his classmates, he has great understanding of numbers and math, has complete letter recognition, early phonics skills and can read sentences composed of words that are 3 letters in length or less. On the flip side: Can he dress himself? No. Is he potty trained? No. And we're in speech therapy, feeding therapy and recent graduates of physical therapy.

We set limits - 30 minutes on weekdays and 2 hours on weekends - and it shuts itself off (long trips in the car are an exception). We set the expectation for her from the get go that the biggest rule was it gets turned off when we say it gets turned off with no arguing. She's been pretty good about it. It's also an amazing bit of currency; she hates to lose it, so when we tell her that will be a consequence, she will usually comply. She does all kinds of stuff on it - learning games (tracing letters and numbers, counting, etc), books that can be read aloud to her (amazing - we read A LOT in our house, so it's nice to get a break sometimes), she has a couple of movies (Nemo, Dory, Frozen, Sing). I also think it's helped with fine motor skills. I think we'll get one for Ben either this Christmas (at 2.5 - I mean, he's the second, so he's already watched way more TV than Maggie ever did) or for his third birthday. The bottom line is, you're the boss. If you don't want him to have it all the time, he doesn't get it all the time.

cagoldi H got her fire for her last birthday. I was also worried about her throwing a fit when I told her time was up but most of the time she does ok. I only let her play with it a couple times a week and it has a time that only allows an hour (if she has it that long).

Matthew watches youtube on my moms ipad. As long as we don't just take it, it's fine. We give him a five minute warning that it needs to be put away or when this video is over. If we just take it with no warning, meltdown.
