Honestly klong11 they expect way too much and want them to know in advance what they should be teaching them in pre-k. That's ridiculous. It also demonstrates so much of how learning at this age is not just about what they are cognitively capable of, but also the impact of desire, listening skills, and motivation. Maddie didn't care about writing at all until more recently. I think I'd bring up the unrealistic expectations for this age group.

It wasn't until I saw SweetPotato 's kid's masterpiece of an elephant on FB that I even realized Evie maybe should know how to draw or write. All my kids are pretty much feral until they go to school. I'm assuming this will be my reality.

peachsmama, you need to throw up the middle finger to your family and move out to the NW with me. I'd love to have a little sister. Your husband could make bank here as a welder. My stepdad retired at 55 with a great pension. I think the best cure for family issues is mileage between you.

B can recognize most uppercase letters but we are no where close to writing. I have tried to get her to trace her name and I know they do letter tracing at D.C., but it just looks like a jumble of squiggly lines.

klong11 , she sounds like S. S is very smart, however, he is also STUBBORN as hell. So there are a lot of things I know he knows. But if he doesn't feel like talking about it, he'll forget it. Like for instance, he knows the letters. When he's the right mood, he'll tell me H is for Henry, etc (he seems to know the letters mostly based on people's names). But if he's not in the right mood, I'll point to an H and he'll just shake his head and say "I don't know". I truly think, like everything else, it's a toddler (preschooler?) control thing. So if she used to know them, my guess is she still does and is just being a PIA like S is. (Not to call C a PIA, but you know what I mean) YES to bolded. I have seen it in all three of my kids. We all know C is soo smart. Homegirl is just stubborn. We know she gets that from YH Does she recognize them for other people aside from her teacher and you? Like YH? I don't know that he has ever even tried, to be honest. I can barely get him to read her a book during bedtime storytime, he usually just lets her play around until I get in there. She got into an argument with my mom when my mom pointed out a letter G. Cadence insisted it was "her" letter, C. My mom gave up after awhile because Cadence wasn't budging on the matter.

I'm also side-eyeing that they want all the work done for them before the kids get to pre-k and are discriminating against kids for any sort of learning issues by only allowing academic stars in.

They work on it in pre-k as well. Going into kindergarten here they have to already be reading and writing. The standard has changed from when I was in school. Kindergarten no longer teaches how to, they should already know and they work on expanding their abilities from there. Granted, I was already reading and writing by 5, but I had older brothers who I was learning from. My Dad used to sit me and my brother at the table when he was teaching my brother something, so that I would learn it at the same time and he wouldn't have to repeat it all over again in 2 years, when I was in his grade.
I don't see it as expecting too much, I feel like it is giving her a better foundation moving forward. I would rather she be ahead than behind.

klong11 M knows all of her letters but no way in hell she can count to 100. She's like snoopmommymom's O & argues with me when she gets to twenty-ten.

Does he know how important that is right now? For them to have someone to read to them? Oh yeah, I don't know if he is just lazy or gives no shits. I'll bring it up and he will start reading to her again, but then it falls to the wayside again. So then, when I go in there to put her to bed I end up reading her 2-3 stories because she hasn't had storytime yet and refuses to go to bed without it. Although lately, she wants "stories out of your mouth"...where there is no book involved, you just tell her a story...but it has to be about her, otherwise it isn't a story she wants to hear. I still read books with her first, though and then after lights out I tell her one "out of my mouth". lol

Hey there! I'm off today cause my in-laws are out of town. My kids are being...not delightful... and I'm trying to clean, pack and shop for our up north trip this weekend.
When is it late enough in the day to start drinking heavily?

They might encourage that but it's not really true or *regional. Public Ks have to take all kids that meet the cut off date no matter what. Kids are going to be all over the place with where they're at with learning and some will have never stepped foot in a classroom. C is already way ahead of many kids just for that fact so there's really no reason to worry on that front.

tgrimes , A Google search has turned up short, so I thought I'd ask the expert. Do they make a two piece dance leotard? Not like a bikini, obviously, but one that resembles a leotard but is essentially cut in half. Just looking for a way to make using the potty at dance class a little easier. No, they don't and it sucks. Especially if she gets all sweaty and you have to pull the tights & the leotard down & back up again. Sounds like there would be a market - you guys should design some!

And he wanted to learn how to spell/write elephant because he is legit obsessed with them. If I tried to teach him "car" I'm sure he'd just roll his eyes and walk away

SweetPotato, that's a good idea! I guess I'll start looking into Disney characters/shopkins/my little ponies with names that start with each letter of the alphabet.

wedding, no, she will do pre-k and then advanced pre-k (for the kids who don't make the age cut-off or are red-shirted). It is basically the same as kinder, but with younger kids. So she has plenty of time and if at any point her teachers want her to stay back and extra month or 2, then it is completely doable. I'm just OCD-ing on what more I could be doing to help her.

Morning all!
So this is our new place? I like it.
I finally have some time to check in from the worst vacation ever. SIL is a piece of work and I'm exhausted from dealing with both kids on my own all week. B told me this morning he wants to go home. I'm trying to hide my grumpiness for his sake but dang, it's hard.
We're headed to the pool after lunch to visit some other family that's here visiting as well, they are much more helpful so I'll get a break hopefully.

DH is coming home today. Thank goodness, these kids are driving me insane. And yesterday I literally talked to no one besides O and people on the phone. Have you guys seen the video that was circulating FB of a place in NYC that sells cookie dough like it's ice cream? DH is being me some. I'm excited to try it. We have tried to go twice and both times the line was across the street and up the block. Insane.

klong11 try the endless alphabet app. C is by no means reading but it's taught him to sound out words and he can recognize any letter. .... he just won't write them.
