Happy New Year, ladies! (Slightly early but oh well) The election year officially begins in 3 days. I am back at work today, but survived 11 days with the ILs! Ready to jump back in.

Apparently Pompeo and Hannity were both born on this day.
But so were Davy Jones and Mike Nesmith, both members of the Monkees.
There's your trivia for today.

Glad to see we all survived family and the holidays! A few weeks ago I posted about one of my students whose family was about to be evicted. Unfortunately, that did end up happening. However JukEboX, jkjacq, blurnette989, cnf, and cakewench stepped up in a big way and helped me cover the cost of an extended stay hotel for 10 days as well as donated items from an Amazon wish list with some basic items they needed. I first and foremost want to make sure they know how grateful I am for their help. I could not have done this alone. And secondly, I wanted the rest of you to know how awesome our little corner of the Internet is! Because of all of this happening over the holidays, the mom has just now heard back from a housing social worker. We will hopefully find out tomorrow when they will move to more permanent housing, but she does qualify. I will post another update when I have it, but this is a huge relief for now!

doublestuf - I'm so sorry to hear they were evicted but how wonderful that people here helped cover the cost of a hotel and needed items in the interim. ❤ I hope it made that family's Christmas better than it would have been otherwise.

Wow, I am so impressed with the ability of a random group of folks from all walks of life and locations to come together to help out a family they have never met. It gives me such hope for the world. You all are gems. I am sorry the family is going through all of that doublestuf but I am glad to hear they qualify for housing assistance.

Daily wanted to gouge my ears out. I had two gossips in front of me that lived to come into work and bitch about their husbands. All. Day. Long.

There are serious protests going on outside the US Embassy in Iraq. They've evacuated most personnel but it's ugly.

There are serious protests going on outside the US Embassy in Iraq. They've evacuated most personnel but it's ugly. I think the scariest part is that he Iraqi forces are supposed to keep people out of the "green zone" around the embassy and reports are saying they just let anybody through without any resistance. I've also seen reports of a fire inside the embassy lobby. I'm wondering how the embassy is laid out. If like in Portugal the lobby is really a security checkpoint and not attached tot he physical building. Hopefully it is similar and there was some distance between the fire and the main building(s).

West Virginia prison guard trainees gave the Nazi salute during their class photo. All of them (plus a few others) were fired.
Good.

Remember that story about the cop who got "Pig" on his cup? He admits he made it up and resigned.
ETA - wait, is this a separate incident from the other name on the cup story? WTF is wrong with people.

I'll ask about the lobby. From what I recall from conversations, everything is very separate.

iruntodrink - I saw on Twitter that the ambassador and other staff had been evacuated, but it sounds like military/security guards are still there.

Looks like a contractor was killed, and that's how *poof* were over there, too. She left in '16, so it's not likely she knew the person because they cycle out/burn out quickly, but still so very scary (he cut his contract short because he went in and out of the Green Zone and saw some shit he would never talk about, she stayed on the compound only and fulfilled hers). The article I read said thousands got into the Green Zone, how terrifying. I hope everyone stays safe and they get things under control quickly.

West Virginia prison guard trainees gave the Nazi salute during their class photo. All of them (plus a few others) were fired. Good. Did you see that they made them retake the photo 10 times until everyone did it? That there were ~10 cadets that expressed concern- 3 eventually relented, the others raised a fist instead. They worried they wouldnt graduate if they didnt participate. Thoughts on this? The leadership hierarchy in law enforcement/military is pretty strict in terms of obeying orders. Is raising a fist the same as what the others did, if they were worried about losing their jobs? It doesnt feel as clear cut as "make the salute!", everyone does, gets fired. The 3 that relented maybe should still be fired, the others raising a fist instead, should the same happen to them? ETA I realize "just obeying orders" is NOT a valid reason and is a very slippery slope. Is a raised fist the same as the salute I guess is what I'm asking, because that doesnt seem like straight "obeying orders" and seems like a form of resistance.
