Lol, I am not help since I just purchased one for my kids today. If you change your mind, there are a few cyber monday sales for switches today. where did you buy it? I'm looking for a bundle that includes a game. We got the original console with tablet options and Mario Kart 8 for $298 from Amazon. There is a newer model Switch, but from everything I read the sole difference is battery life and we are planning on letting them only use the console, so it was a non issue for us. The game is also a download, not cartridge, if that matters.

Target is having a deal on the newer model that includes a memory card that my gamer coworker says is great to have.

The only reason he wants it is for the Pokemon role playing game. But he's never held a controller ever. It feels like we should start with Mario Kart or something first, but that's not what he wants.

Lord Jesus my kid is decent at some video games but trying to watch him do Mario Kart is so painful. He cannot master the combo of accelerating and steering at the same time. It’s either drive very fast straight into the barrier or turn very slowly until you to roll to a stop. We have shelved Mario Kart for a while. Sounds like me trying to play Minecraft (which my kid is ridiculous at). I've got him on Goose Game though. He's not good at waiting creating distractions so he can do stuff behind their back (so yay?).

It’s really fun and engaging and pretty easy to play. DS also loves Kirby and Crash Bandicoot and Donkey Kong. We play Mario Party constantly-he just played with my dad this weekend. We got DS a switch at 5 and we all play it and neither H or I enjoy video games. H loved playing so much he bought a second one to take on tour with him. The controllers when separated are pretty small and easy for little hands to play with.

brux I didn't read more than the first few posts but I will say that our library has a super selection of switch games. Probably 60%+ of the games my kids play they've checked out from the library. It works well since some games they've beaten quickly or just haven't liked that much and the games they really love we buy.

Does he want Pokémon Sword/Shield? You can buy just one of them to play. It’s not bad, but definitely more of a world explorer game.
DS got Zelda as a second game and it was a little hard for him for a while because the exploration type world meant he didn’t have a “next task” so to speak. We ended up playing that together (and now it’s a fave).

There are settings where you can make his car go automatically, so all he has to do is steer. And it lets you set that individually by controller so you can play against him the regular way. It’s how my five year old has played for the last year.

I think jumping right into that type of game might be hard.

The let’s go pikachu/eevee are harder IMO because it doesn’t always say what the next location is whereas sword/shield will tell you on the menu screen. Each set of games does teach you what to do and how to work the controllers for the game you have. and you don’t need both games, just one. Main difference is a few exclusive pokemon, and I think a gym leader change this time around. You can’t “catch ‘em all” without someone to trade with that has the other version, but that’s the way of the pokemon games

Since we're on the subject of the Switch, what games do your 8 year olds like to play? We have just about all the Marios but he seems bored of it. I just got him Monster Jam Steel Titans but the excitement eventually wore down. His attention span is pretty limited. Would be nice to find something we can bring along on vacation later this month that he's actually interested in.

This is my 5 yo, but luckily it's so much fun to watch his brothers or his dad play that it doesn't matter! That game is a winner.

You can tether the switch to your phone's hot spot and play some games cross platform. The boys play rocket league, fortnite and minecraft while in the car with their friends who are at home on the xbox, pc or ps4. If you get pokemon games, get amiibo to go with it. They unlock special features. As far as pokemon, DS2 likes Pokken Tournament and Detective Pikachu games. Other games: Mario Party, Mario Kart, Zelda, 1 2 Switch, Super Smash Bros.

I’ll be the dissenter.
We got it for DD’s 8th birthday last year. She asked for it and we thought it would be great for all her car rides to doctors appointment, hospital stays, etc. Well she barely touches it.
I honestly think it gives her anxiety. She LOVES watching DH play but doesn’t want to play because she isn’t good at it.
So it sits there.

He will have no problem figuring it out.

DS (7 in January) desperately wants a switch. His older cousins have one and he thinks it’s the coolest thing ever. DH would love to have one too, but we both agree he just isn’t ready. We’re working on not obsessing to play all. the. time. and not throwing controllers when frustrated. Hopefully next year.
Currently he watches videos of other kids playing games on his iPad. I got him some gamer stuff: Pokemon books, Mario underpants, action figures, etc. I think between that and the LEGO city police station he should be happy enough this year.

Don't forget a screen protector. And we like the wireless pro controllers (look like an xbox controller). Target has a pokeball one.

My 7 and 9 year old, liked Captain Toad Treasure Tracker but finished it quickly (That was one we had from the library), Kirby Star Allies, all the Lego games. Right now they're playing: Mario+ Rabbids Kingdom Battle, ring fit adventure, and Luigi's Mansion 3. They didn't like Zelda.

DS has no clue what the switch is. He just saw a picture of it next to a Pokemon game and decided it was cool. Another reason I'd like to avoid it...wait until he's actually seen one in real life and thinks it looks fun. We got my kid one for his birthday, so...yours will see it IRL soon 😬

H and I talked and felt a little uneasy about Santa giving a $400 gift, so we'll let him feel a little disappointment and then get it for him weeks later!

My kids love creative mode in Minecraft and they build houses and tend to animals. It's like Sims in build mode.

I do feel a game like Minecraft is great for fine motor skill building without them noticing. Especially for boys who normally lag behind girls with this. People will recmend coloring too. I had mine on Minecraft 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
