Let's not talk civility, Joe! Civility is a very thin veneer for silencing.

Let's hear more about Kamala's plan for childcare please! But no, let's talk to Yang.

oh damn isn't Yang correct on this.
If a kid's parents can't afford to send him to pre-k, he starts kindergarten already behind, and is playing catch-up from day one. I don't think UBI is the best way to address that, but it's important.

Huh. That was a softball and I feel like Yang whiffed it.
I need a solid answer here. These are some of my top issues.
Eta to clarify: he had some solid points but no solid answer other than UBI.

If Amy was running 20 years ago, she'd be the nominee. But I think big parts of the Democratic party today are looking for big promises.

But can we talk about how kindergarten “prerequisites” are stupid as fuck and not developmentally appropriate. And that even reading at 5 isn’t really developmentally appropriate. These kids are behind because we decided to make the standards ridiculous. But I probably shouldn’t be trusted as a homeschool mom.

I don't think UBI is the best way to address that, but it's important. Especially since K is the new 1st grade from when we were kids. I'm so grateful that IL does have a free state funded PreK program, though it's unfortunately not universal yet.

Kamala's talking about the sandwich generation, and the undue burden it places on women.
This is usually Yang's lane but she's doing it first and far more effectively than he does.

My mom is a PreK teacher and she thinks the state requirements for her 3 and 4 year olds are ridiculous. What we need, really, is actual educators setting educational policy. But that's not the case.

I need someone to come in strong with universal pre-k. We just moved and our school district has 1/2 day preschool with no wrap around care for 4 year olds. Uh, I have to work so thats big nope for me. So now my kid, who is a late birthday so will be a late start, will do almost 2 years in the oldest class at his daycare. He will be bored to tears and likely “behind” when starting K if we can’t spend time with him outside of daycare. And his daycare is considered a “preschool” but definitely not equivalent to a school setting pre-k.

Booker bringing up gentrification and the racial inequality in housing is soooo important. We need to be hearing more about this.

I’ve joined a bunch of ECE groups, especially Reggio because I *love* the idea of play based, interest-led learning for littles and the research that is shared in those communities has been really eye opening. Even a few years ago, when my oldest was in K, I thought there wasn’t enough worksheets and homework and I’m very 😳😳😳 at myself.

And his daycare is considered a “preschool” but definitely not equivalent to a school setting pre-k. One of the reasons that we chose Wisconsin over Minnesota was because they have free 4K here. We might never use it, but I’m happy to send my tax dollars that way because it is a fantastic opportunity for parents. Especially when childcare is as expensive as it is. Sometimes you need to get kids into the school system for the purpose of relieving some childcare costs. But hopefully we can work on that too.
