NYS newspaper that had previously endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik rips on her.
The North Country is an interesting place, especially the area within the blue line of the Adirondack Park where there is a lot of state zoning regulation and towns can be quite remote. It runs a little libertarian and the local culture tends to value integrity, common sense, and self-reliance. It’s definitely not Trump acolyte territory.

Massachusetts wants to ban single use plastic bags and also charge 10 cents to people who want a paper bag. Basically forcing people to carry a reusable shopping bag. I think this is a good thing. The comments on social media are something. Basically people are acting like this is the worst thing. It's so haaaaard to remember a bag! Government can't tell me not to pollute the world! Too many taxes! I can't even. People were definitely like this in the Bay Area when they banned plastic bags. The sky is falling, etc... In reality, it was still relatively easy to acquire plastic bags from retailers and people adjusted to bringing their own bags to the grocery store.

Easier for the toddler to "help" unpacking

Also if you live anywhere with stairs or an elevator it’s so much easier to put those reusable bags on your shoulders rather than have the plastic digging in mid forearm.

My only thing with the reusable bags is feeling like an ass at the checkout. I end up re-bagging everything, even after politely saying to the clerk that they can fill them up because they're so sturdy. I am not precious about keeping meats/ bread/ veggies separate. If it fits, it goes in the bag. Just because I have 10 bags, doesn't mean I want to use 10 bags.
I use self-check as much as possible, but it's not always available.
It's awesome that states are adopting these measures. I hope it catches on here, too. Does it extend to produce bags as well? I'd love that.

It’s definitely a different bagging strategy. We still have plastic bags in the produce aisle. I try to save mine in my reusable bags so I get multiple uses out of each one. I also have a couple reusable produce bags but I find those a little difficult on cashiers because they can’t always see the number sticker. I refuse to use self checkout unless I have no other option.

I love my reusable bags, and the clerks at our Wegmans generally do a pretty good job. We just bought a second set of bags, actually; we kept forgetting and leaving them in the house, so now there's always a set in the car.

All boxed items, all meats, all produce, etc. They tend to do better packing them fuller that way. Wegmans will also generally ask if you want them packed heavy or light. We always say heavy and sometimes they can puzzle and entire week's worth of groceries into like four bags. It's very impressive if you get a good cashier.

I was going to mention leaving them in the trunk (if you drive to the store). It sounds simple but that was the biggest complaint people had when we changed over is that they always forgot theirs. I have them in the trunk and it’s just second nature now. You can also take them from the trunk and put them next to your purse/wallet in the car when you get in to go to the store.

I’m kind of surprised places like NY and CT are just getting this. I’m glad it’s catching on but just kind of surprised it’s taken this long. Maybe big cities had it first? It started in SF for us and then extended county by county.

Related to the reducing plastics use conversation, did anyone else see this horrifying article in the NYT? link Plastic waste from America, collected for recycling, is shipped to Indonesia. Some is burned as fuel by tofu makers, producing deadly chemicals and contaminating food.

I love only having 2-3 large, durable bags from my weekly grocery trip, instead of 10 small ones that rip.

"So carry a reusable bag." "I can't be expected to remember to bring my own bag!" His roommate was a literal rocket scientist. Couldn't be bothered to remember to bring a bag. *brain explodes*

It started in SF for us and then extended county by county. I haven't lived in CT super long, but as far as I can tell there are a lot of loud, old white people with old money that complain any time anything changes. And so here we are. I live not far from Mystic and the fb groups are full of WASPs complaining they can't fit their boats in the marina because of all these new families with their boats and oh the humanity. And this isn't even the rich side of CT! Ah, so you've met my exH's family. They live in Stonington. They own several car dealerships. They were buuuuullshit that their marina was getting full and it wasn't faaaaaair. So now they live in their second house in FL for most of the year. It was the most ridiculous thing. Unrelated, but Stonington Vineyards is fantastic if you ever get a chance. I used to keep bottles of the Seaport White around for when my non-wine drinking friends came over and they all really liked it. I found their Cabernet to be easy drinking, too.

Yes! I like them and a few others out here (and it's so pretty there). We had several wineries in NC we loved, so I was happy when we found some here too. Ooh, at some point, let me know which ones! I haven't seen a bunch around me, but there were several on our way to the mountains that I wanted to stop at (we didn't, and I had the sads)

I haven't seen a bunch around me, but there were several on our way to the mountains that I wanted to stop at (we didn't, and I had the sads) If I don't tell you now, I'll forget (#BlameTheConcussions) 😂 Silver Fork in Morganton and South Creek in Nebo are my big recs. There used to be Belle Nicho in Nebo too, but they closed We still get South Creek shipped to us. Shadow Line in Granite Falls is newer and so their wines aren't super aged, but it's gorgeous and the people are lovely, and the wine is good for the age. It's the one place I'll drink Riesling (I'm a red wine drinker). Lake James in Glen Alpine is... ok. They're *super* nice and have a lovely antique shop attached (with good prices). But most of the wine is really sweet. If you do end up in that area and also want to add in beer, Fonta Flora in downtown Morganton is excellent. They also have an impressive bottleshop/bar called Brown Mountain Bottleworks. Catawba Brewing is also there, but they're less craft (cool space though). If you ever go to Yadkin and want recs, message me. We went years ago and I might still have my spreadsheet, lol. We hit like 16 wineries in two days. And thus endeth my TED talk on booze in the former furniture triangle of NC 😂 Thank you! This is helpful

grocery store baggers--
plastic bags: one item per bag. Can't make it too heavy.
Reusable bags: Let's see what this bitch can hold.
I bring lots of bags bc it is hard for me to carry heavy bags. Yet they seem to take it as a personal challenge to get everything in as few bags as possible. (I'm not actually complaining. I think it's funny and I just carry stuff that has to go in fridge/freezer in right away and wait for the boys or H to get the rest if I"m hurting)

Along the lines of plastic vs reusable bags, I'm all in favor of paper straws *if* straws are needed at restaurants. That's another change that gets people all in a tizzy.
